Design Interview

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

The main idea behind Royal Residential Complex was to create a luxurious and sustainable living environment that enhances quality of life. We wanted to design a residential community that balances privacy and social interaction, while offering residents direct access to nature, wellness features, and advanced smart technologies.

The project draws inspiration from the rich historical and architectural heritage of Erdemli, Mersin, particularly the ancient civilizations of the Hittites, Romans, and Byzantines. Elements such as arches and columns reflect this legacy while being reinterpreted through a modern architectural language.

At its core, the design aims to blend contemporary living with natural beauty, cultural depth, and sustainable innovation to provide an elevated residential experience.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

Our main focus was to design a residential complex that offers a distinctive balance between modern luxury, cultural identity, and sustainable living. We wanted to create an environment where residents feel connected to both the history of the place and the comforts of contemporary life.

We aimed to achieve a seamless integration of architecture, landscape, and community spaces. Key goals included maximizing sea views, promoting well-being through green spaces and wellness amenities, and incorporating smart technologies that enhance daily living.

Ultimately, we wanted to provide residents with a lifestyle that is enriching, healthy, and harmonious with the local environment, setting a new standard for residential developments in the region.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

Our primary goal is to successfully complete the construction of Royal Residential Complex and deliver a high-quality living environment that fully reflects the original design vision.

Beyond this, we plan to use the experience and insights gained from this project to inform future residential developments in the region and beyond. The design principles established in Royal, especially the integration of cultural identity, smart technologies, and sustainable living, will continue to shape our upcoming projects.

We also hope that the recognition from the A’ Design Award will inspire greater interest in creating thoughtful, high-quality architecture in emerging urban areas like Erdemli, helping to raise the overall standard of design in the community.

Grand Interview

Your innovative integration of a 2,200 square meter seawater pool and 350-meter adventure canal in Royal Residential Complex represents a bold departure from traditional residential amenities - what inspired this distinctive approach to creating a water-focused living environment?

Our vision for Royal Residential Complex was to create a living environment that goes beyond standard amenities by making water a core element of daily life. Situated in Erdemli with its Mediterranean coastal context, we designed a 2,200 m² seawater pool and a 350 m adventure canal to evoke the sea even within the residence. This concept emerged from studying cultural connections to water in local history and from research showing that immersive water environments improve well‑being. By blending relaxation, play, and social gathering around water, we aimed to foster community, elevate experience, and anchor the project firmly in its coastal identity.

The Royal Residential Complex seamlessly blends modern luxury with historical architectural elements like arches - how did your team navigate the challenge of harmonizing these contrasting design languages while maintaining the project's contemporary identity?

Balancing modernity and heritage in Erdemli meant more than mixing styles – it required creating a meaningful dialogue. We drew inspiration from ancient civilizations like the Hitites, Romans, and Byzantines, then reinterpreted arches and columns using contemporary proportions and materials. Arches were refined to align with tower elevations and used to frame sea views and communal spaces. Using BIM modeling we tested several iterations to ensure classical forms felt fresh, not copied. The result merges historical form language with modern architecture – honoring place without losing identity.

Looking at the impressive scale of Royal Residential Complex, covering 41,000 square meters of built area, how did your sustainable design strategies evolve to ensure both environmental responsibility and resident comfort across such an expansive development?

As the project evolved, our sustainability strategies focused on balancing scale with environmental responsibility. We prioritized passive design principles, such as natural ventilation and daylight use, and integrated energy-efficient systems like smart HVAC, solar-ready infrastructure, and greywater recycling. Landscape elements, including green roofs and native plantings, help manage heat and water runoff. Our goal was to reduce long-term environmental impact while maximizing thermal comfort, energy savings, and quality of life for all residents.
