About Lart du Pouvoir Residential House

Lart du Pouvoir is a residential interior project crafted for a powerful, independent female homeowner. The space expresses strength through softness, blending clean structure with fluid lines. At its core lies a sculptural curved ceiling inspired by a queen's cloak symbolizing grace and power. Smart home integration enhances daily life with subtle control, while stone textures and warm woods bring balance and refined ambiance. The layout is intentionally open, yet grounded with warmth and emphasis.

Khaw Wei Quan's residential interior demonstrates a refined engagement with contemporary spatial design traditions that privilege material authenticity, chromatic restraint, and the careful calibration of visual weight across the architectural envelope, positioning the work within evolving conversations around quiet luxury, sensory richness through textural diversity, and the domestic interior as a carefully choreographed environment supporting both aesthetic contemplation and daily human activity. The spatial composition reveals sophisticated understanding of asymmetrical balance, wherein distributed masses achieve equilibrium without resorting to bilateral symmetry, the substantial sectional seating at left counterpoised by the architectural solidity of the paneled right wall, while chromatic accents in emerald and terracotta establish rhythmic punctuation across the central zone. The designer's chromatic strategy demonstrates notable restraint and intelligence, building a foundational harmony through warm and cool neutrals in charcoal, taupe, cream, and gray-beige that establish atmospheric continuity, then introducing calculated saturation through the emerald lounge chair and orange accent seating, creating visual activation that enlivens without overwhelming, a balance requiring considerable chromatic sensitivity and confidence in material selection. Material vocabulary spans stone, wood, textile, metal, and glass, each substance allowed to express its inherent character: the veined drama of stone paneling, the linear rhythm of vertical wood slats, the soft yielding quality of upholstered elements, the cool transparency of glass accessories, suggesting a design philosophy rooted in material honesty and tactile diversity. The handling of natural illumination demonstrates spatial intelligence, the expansive sheer drapery transforming raw daylight into soft atmospheric glow that permeates the interior without harsh contrast, supplemented by recessed architectural lighting that maintains even luminosity across varied conditions, ensuring the space functions as sanctuary across the diurnal cycle. The circular motifs recurring throughout formal vocabulary including the curved sectional geometry, the round coffee table, the tufted cushion, and the area rug establish visual coherence through geometric echo, the circle's associations with gathering, completion, and continuity reinforcing the space's function as conversational nexus and domestic anchor. The work may be understood within lineages extending from Scandinavian spatial clarity and Japanese material reverence through Belgian textural eclecticism to contemporary cosmopolitan residential design, wherein global influences synthesize into environments honoring both aesthetic sophistication and pragmatic human needs. Thematically, the interior invites contemplation of sanctuary creation within contemporary life, the domestic environment as respite from external demands, and the psychological nourishment derived from spaces that acknowledge human need for beauty, comfort, sensory richness, and visual coherence, the careful curation evident throughout suggesting design as act of care, the crafting of environments that support flourishing. How might this space transform across daily and seasonal cycles as light quality shifts, as objects are rearranged, as human presence animates the carefully composed stillness, and what might such adaptive capacity reveal about design's relationship to time, use, and the evolving needs of those who dwell within?

Production Technology
The project was crafted through meticulous traditional carpentry, executed entirely by local artisans. Custom millwork was seamlessly integrated with brushed iron structures, marble cladding, and three-dimensional ceramic tiles. The smart home system utilizes Aqara to control air conditioning (warm/cool), curtains, lighting, projection screen, and environmental modes. It also monitors energy consumption in real-time. The kitchen features premium cabinetry from Italian brand Stosa, selected for its refined finishes and ergonomic functionality.
Design Challenge
The key challenge was sculpting the ceiling to convey symbolic leadership-lowing yet restrained. It required multiple scaled mockups, structural negotiations, and finish tests to find the curve's ideal softness. Meanwhile, integrating full smart systems invisibly, while preserving minimalist purity, was a technical and aesthetic balancing act.
Project Duration
The project was carried out from June 2024 to February 2025 in Taichung City, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The home responds to the user's presence intuitively. With voice or app control, curtains draw, lights shift to preset scenes, the air adjusts to a comfortable temperature, and the projection screen emerges from the marble wall. Each transition is designed to feel fluid and theatrical, yet discreet-reinforcing the user's control over the atmosphere.
Research
Research focused on spatial emotion and behavioral flow. Interviews and lifestyle observations of the client revealed a desire for quiet strength and low-profile elegance. Light behavior mapping and thermal studies supported the ceiling design, while system logic trees for the smart home defined the user's ideal routines. The result is a space where meaning and automation coexist.
Inspiration
The design was inspired by the client - a woman whose presence is calm yet commanding. At the first site visit, she said, "I do not want a flat ceiling, but nothing too dramatic either." That moment led to the idea of a flowing cloak, translated into a dual-curved ceiling. The entrance features a bold geometric floor, referencing a chessboard as a metaphor for control and elegance. The space merges softness with structure, using materials and smart systems to reflect quiet authority.
