About Light and Form Residential House

Light and Form is the interior design of a six-story standalone house in Taichung City, Taiwan. The first floor is a communal area for gathering and hosting guests. The second to fourth floors hold private bedrooms. The fifth floor contains an audiovisual room with a bar, and the sixth floor holds a home office. Wood and stone textures form the material base, while soft colors create a calm setting. A floating staircase with LED strip lights reduces the visual weight of the structure. The layout separates social and quiet areas to improve privacy and comfort.

Light and Form Residential House by Cheng He Interior Design Studio represents a compelling synthesis of contemporary residential spatial planning and material-driven design philosophy, situating itself within the broader movement toward warm minimalism that has emerged as a humanizing response to the perceived coldness of earlier minimalist traditions. This design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how open-plan living environments can achieve both visual continuity and functional zoning through strategic placement of architectural elements rather than through conventional walls or partitions, a spatial strategy that has dominated contemporary residential design since the mid-twentieth century yet continues to evolve in its material expression and atmospheric refinement. The compositional achievement here centers on the careful orchestration of horizontal and vertical elements creating dynamic equilibrium: the emphatic horizontal rhythm of the timber-slatted ceiling establishes a unifying datum that visually extends the space while providing acoustic performance and concealing technical services, countered by the vertical monumentality of the freestanding marble volume that anchors the center of the composition and provides necessary spatial definition between zones. The chromatic palette exhibits notable discipline, built entirely upon warm-to-cool neutral progressions that avoid chromatic intensity in favor of subtle tonal relationships, allowing material character and texture to provide visual interest rather than color contrast, a strategy that produces serene, timeless atmospheres less vulnerable to stylistic obsolescence. Particular passages reward close attention: the book-matched marble panels display the natural drama of stone veining symmetrically arranged, creating subtle visual incident within the geometric discipline of the overall scheme; the media wall composition achieves balance through tripartite organization with recessed center and flanking fluted panels that echo the ceiling rhythm, demonstrating how contemporary technology integration can be addressed with architectural dignity rather than as afterthought; and the furnishing selections introduce sculptural form and textural variety through the curved occasional tables and the rich patina of cognac leather against the cooler surrounding palette. The technical execution appears accomplished throughout, with tight tolerances evident in cabinet joinery, precise alignment of ceiling slats, clean material transitions, and integrated lighting that enhances rather than dominates the spatial experience. This work seems to explore the contemporary dwelling as a space of material refinement and spatial flow, where the rituals of cooking, dining, and gathering occur in visual continuity yet maintain functional definition, where natural materials including stone and timber ground the composition in tangible physical presence, and where restraint in color and ornamentation allows architecture and carefully selected objects to speak clearly. The design invites contemplation of how domestic environments might balance openness with intimacy, minimalism with warmth, geometric discipline with organic material character, and how the thoughtful selection and composition of materials can create atmospheres that support both the practical functions and the psychological dimensions of contemporary home life. How might the interplay of horizontal and vertical elements, warm and cool tones, geometric precision and natural variation, work together to shape not merely visual experience but the felt quality of daily dwelling, the atmosphere within which domestic life unfolds?

Unique Properties
In this six story standalone house, the first floor serves as a communal area for bonding and hosting guests, while the second to fourth floors include private bedrooms, offering tranquility. The fifth floor houses an audiovisual room paired with a bar, while the sixth floor is dedicated to a home office. The strategic allocation of vertical space and the creation of a seamless flow not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a home but also its livability. The layout separates social and quiet areas, enhancing privacy and comfort. Soft colors create a neutral and serene base. Beyond mere illumination, natural light serves to highlight the natural textures and materials present in the decor, including wood and stone. Its interplay of light and shadow adds depth and visual intrigue to the environment, enhancing its overall appeal. Subtle metal details and reflective surfaces add layers of sophistication, contributing to a design that is both elegant and luxurious.

Design Challenge
The serene gray palette extends into the bedroom, where refined paint textures and warm wood hues create a comfortable and relaxing retreat. Gray-tinted mirrors soften the presence of the low beams, reducing their visual weight while adding depth and dimension to the space. In the audiovisual room, expansive coated surfaces create a grounded and immersive atmosphere. LED strip lights guide the eye and introduce a sense of movement. Twinkling lights resemble countless stars scattered across the night sky, imbuing the quiet space with a rich and evocative ambiance.
Project Duration
The project finished in October 2024 in Taichung City, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
To alleviate visual stress, lighten structural presence, and create symmetry, the interior strikes a delicate balance between openness and enclosure. The result is a spatial composition that is grand yet nuanced. The ceiling features interwoven grilles forming wave-like patterns, subtly delineating the living and dining areas while maintaining visual openness and continuity. A floating staircase, illuminated by LED strip lights, reduces the visual weight of the structure, lending an air of lightness and refined minimalism. The staircases inside and outside the house mirror each other in a symmetrical composition, revealing a hidden sense of order. The half-height TV wall and the extension of materials create a seamless visual flow, enhancing the overall coherence of the space.
Research
To realize the homeowner’s longing for a connection with nature, wood and stone textures form the foundation, exuding a sense of tranquility. Metal and mirrored surfaces not only reflect light but also create visual interest and dimension. In the communal area, breathing space between pieces can create a sense of openness and calm. Soft, curved edges enhance this serene ambiance, evoking a relaxed sense of sophistication. The area beneath the staircase and the semi-height TV wall are designed with restraint, allowing the space to breathe while maintaining an understated elegance.
Inspiration
Drawing inspiration from the interplay of light, shadow, and materials, the design artfully balances functionality with a sense of humanistic warmth. Through the interplay of contrasting materials and the layering of gentle curves, the design establishes a harmonious foundation. The use of consistent patterns and linear elements creates a sense of flow. Here, the home transcends its role as a mere living space — it becomes a true reflection of the lifestyle and dreams.
