About Wabi Sabi Beauty Residential

Wabi Sabi Beauty is a residential interior design for a newly built home of 66 square meters in Taipei. The layout was changed from three rooms into a master bedroom, an open study and a walk-in closet, which enlarged the shared living areas. A white backdrop makes the interior feel more spacious. Decorative paint imitates the grain of stone wall panels and adds a natural texture. The open study connects to the living room and includes a large screen television. The kitchen holds an island, appliances and a wine rack.

Lo Shih-Cheng's Wabi Sabi Beauty Residential situates itself within the convergence of several significant contemporary interior design philosophies, drawing particularly from the Japanese aesthetic tradition of wabi-sabi with its veneration of natural materials, asymmetry, and the beauty of imperfection, while simultaneously engaging with Scandinavian minimalism's emphasis on functional clarity and the Belgian school's sophisticated neutral palette, creating a residential environment that appears to meditate on themes of spatial serenity, material authenticity, and the eloquence of restraint. The compositional achievement of this integrated living space demonstrates accomplished spatial planning through the seamless dissolution of traditional room boundaries, establishing distinct functional zones for food preparation, casual dining, and media viewing within a single flowing volume that maintains clarity of purpose while avoiding visual fragmentation, the disciplined chromatic restraint throughout the environment evidencing sophisticated color sensitivity where subtle variations within the warm neutral spectrum create dimensional richness without chromatic competition, and the strategic deployment of the textured stone feature wall providing essential tactile and visual complexity that prevents monotony while maintaining overall tonal harmony. Technical facility becomes evident in the precise detailing of cabinetry with flush surfaces and concealed hardware, the careful alignment of architectural elements including ceiling plane interruptions that define spatial zones without physical barriers, the integration of lighting systems both natural and artificial to achieve even ambient illumination without harsh shadows or hotspots, and the selection of materials ranging from smooth lacquered surfaces to deeply textured stone relief that demonstrates discerning attention to haptic variation and visual interest through surface quality rather than chromatic diversity. The work invites consideration of how contemporary residential design increasingly engages with themes of sanctuary and refuge, creating domestic environments that offer respite from sensory overload through visual quietude, how the wabi-sabi philosophy of finding beauty in simplicity and imperfection translates into built spatial environments through material authenticity and textural irregularity celebrated rather than concealed, and how the designer navigates the tension between the minimalist imperative toward reduction and the human need for warmth and tactile engagement, here resolved through the careful orchestration of neutral tones that read as warm rather than clinical, and through the introduction of organic textural variation that provides visual richness within strict chromatic discipline. The flanking cylindrical speaker towers suggest attention to acoustic experience as integral to domestic atmosphere, while the transparency of sheer window treatments indicates negotiation between privacy needs and the desire for natural illumination, both choices reflecting contemporary residential priorities that extend beyond purely visual considerations to encompass multisensory environmental quality. One might observe how the composition's emphasis on horizontal lines and planes creates psychological associations with stability, repose, and groundedness, how the elevated ceiling plane with its subtle formal articulation expands the sense of spatial volume without requiring dramatic vertical exaggeration, and how the designer's material selections privilege natural stone and wood-derived products alongside refined lacquered surfaces, suggesting environmental values alongside aesthetic ones. How does this interior environment's studied neutrality and spatial openness speak to contemporary desires for domestic spaces that function as counterpoints to the visual complexity and informational density of contemporary urban experience, and what might the careful curation of every visible element suggest about the evolving relationship between domestic space and personal identity in an era of ubiquitous visual documentation?

Production Technology
The overall space uses a white backdrop, which allows the space to feel more spacious. The design team adopts the Wabi sabi style as the core concept, emphasizing the beauty of nature and simplicity. Decorative paint is used to mimic the grains of PU stone wall panels, and the textures of the materials convey a rustic charm, further enhancing the natural feel of the space.
Design Challenge
With white as the dominant color tone, the design reflects a wabi sabi style. The workspace is directly connected to the living room, and the flowing lines create a cohesive setting where work and daily life blend naturally. Within the calm white backdrop, the layout supports both focus and relaxation, maintaining a sense of balance. As the light changes, the space adapts into a dynamic area for esports, illustrating the interplay between tranquility and energy while supporting a flexible lifestyle.
Project Duration
The project finished in January 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The design embraces negative space to cultivate a sense of tranquility in daily life. Within the 66 square meters interior, the aim is to establish a refreshing and harmonious living ambience. The design team employs a light toned backdrop, layering carefully selected materials to add depth without feeling monotonous. Taking into account the households profession in finance, an open study connects with the living room, thoughtfully incorporating a large screen television to support the work needs.
Research
The design project is tailored for the living needs of one to two people. The designer reconfigures the original layout, transforming two small rooms and a master room into an open study, a spacious master bedroom, and a walk in closet. This adjustment improves the overall functionality and creates a more balanced spatial layout. Considering the household’s cooking habits, the design also incorporates a kitchen island, essential appliances, and a wine rack.
Inspiration
The Japanese writer Ango Sakaguchi once said, Beauty doesnt lie in extravagant decoration, but in true existence. This idea reflects that the essence of life’s beauty is found in simplicity and nature. In this project, the concept is expressed through material textures and the use of negative space, creating a calm and harmonious atmosphere.
