About Grand Sequence Apartment
Grand Sequence is an apartment interior design created for a family of four. The 148.5 square meter home in Taichung is shaped through color, light, and material. A dark toned foyer offers a calm arrival, while mirror and glass cabinetry reduce the sense of confinement. An illuminated wall band guides the sightline and widens the space. Soft matte beige Italian marble spans the main wall, and white sheer curtains diffuse strong sunlight. Circular metal pendants center the dining area. Separate corners give each family member a distinct personal place.
FU-MEI CHIU's Grand Sequence Apartment represents a distinguished contribution to contemporary residential interior design, demonstrating sophisticated spatial intelligence and refined material sensibility within the lineage of modernist domestic environments that privilege open planning, material honesty, and the orchestration of natural and artificial light as primary architectural elements. This accomplished interior synthesis draws upon mid-century modernist traditions of flowing space and geometric clarity while incorporating contemporary lighting technologies and a nuanced understanding of domestic scale and human habitation patterns that distinguish residential design at its most thoughtful. The compositional achievement evident throughout this living environment lies in the designer's skillful calibration of visual rhythm and spatial hierarchy, most notably through the deployment of sculptural circular pendant fixtures that establish a dominant horizontal cadence across the upper register while their varied scales and staggered positioning prevent monotony and create dynamic visual interest as one moves through the space. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates notable restraint and maturity, operating within a carefully controlled palette of warm cognac and chestnut earth tones derived from the leather furnishings, balanced against cool neutral grays in the architectural envelope, with strategic warm amber accents from integrated lighting creating atmospheric depth and temporal modulation as daylight conditions shift throughout the day. Technical facility appears throughout the seamless integration of concealed linear lighting systems within ceiling reveals and wall niches, the precise detailing of shadow gaps and planar transitions that emphasize the geometric clarity of the architectural container, and the evident material quality of stone, leather, metal, and textile selections that suggest both durability and sensory richness. The designer seems to have approached the challenge of creating spatial definition within an open plan through layered strategies including furniture arrangement that establishes implicit boundaries between dining and lounging zones, overhead lighting that reinforces these functional territories through fixture placement and illumination patterns, and subtle material transitions that guide movement and visual attention without resorting to physical barriers. Thematically, this interior invites contemplation of contemporary domestic life as it might be lived with aesthetic intentionality, material awareness, and spatial generosity, suggesting that the everyday rituals of dining, conversing, reading, and simply inhabiting space can be elevated through thoughtful environmental design that engages multiple senses and rewards continued observation. The work appears to reference the rich tradition of modernist residential interiors that understand the home as a site for cultivated living, echoing the spatial fluidity and material refinement found in mid-century precedents while employing contemporary lighting technologies and a current material palette that situates the work firmly within present design discourse. One might observe how the designer has created an environment that balances architectural rigor with sensory warmth, geometric clarity with organic softness, visual interest with restful simplicity, establishing conditions for domesticity that honor both the need for stimulation and the equally important need for calm, inviting consideration of how residential environments might serve as frameworks for daily life that nurture well-being through beauty, material quality, and spatial intelligence that accommodates the full spectrum of human activity from social gathering to solitary reflection.

- Production Technology
- Spanning the main wall, soft matte beige Italian marble establishes a calm and composed backdrop through its refined cutting details. White curtain sheers diffuse harsh sunlight, soften the glare, and suffuse an undertone of relaxation and tranquility. When lighting meets colors and materials at the right balance, the space reveals a rhythmic sequence of movement and stillness, shadow and light, resonating a warm and artful lifestyle of a family of four.
- Design Challenge
- Catering to the needs and the independence of growing children, each personal space is cohesively integrated yet distinct from each other, expressing their individual character through daily life.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in December 2025 in Xitun District, Taichung city.
- Operation Flow
- Alongside the side wall, where a row of dark cabinetry subtly defines the spatial boundaries, and glass cabinet doors reflect fragments of daily life, a series of circle metallic pendants centers the dining area as the heart of the space. Contrasting to the minimal elegance of the main wall, the dining tabletop’s marble veins bloomingly spread out, layering texture and visuality, forming a material interplay composed of multidimensional relationships, rather than a singular combination.
- Research
- Probe to a deeper dialogue between materials and color: a brown leather sofa paired with a walnut bookshelf forms the wife’s cozy reading corner. Whereas a charcoal-toned armchair for the husband complements the dark stone steps, which leads to a private retreat hidden behind the stone wall, unfolding alongside the deepening rhythm of the materials.
- Inspiration
- Aesthetics is an objective discipline, but its appreciation greatly varies across generations and perspectives. This project explores the overarching nature of aesthetics: how a family of four, each with distinct preferences and interests, can share a space that is shaped through subtle details, balanced atmospheres, and emotional resonance. Inspired by the warm simplicity of the homeowners’ art collection, the design investigates the connection between the occupants and the living space, particularly through the color and light.
