About Vessel in Urban Residence
Vessel in Urban is a three-story residence designed for multi-generational family living in a busy downtown district. The building is made of fair-faced concrete and clad with large areas of glass paired with wood. Green landscapes are planted in the courtyard, terrace and balconies, and floor-to-ceiling windows bring daylight and views of the plants into every room. Window placement was planned to protect privacy from nearby houses. Natural wood surfaces are finished with a lacquered shine, following traditional lacquerware craft. The construction area is 770 square meters.
Bao Chi Huei's Vessel in Urban Residence exemplifies contemporary residential interior architecture wherein material authenticity and spatial generosity converge to create environments of refined domesticity and contemplative living, positioning itself within design movements that seek to humanize modernist spatial principles through the careful orchestration of natural materials, calibrated light, and restrained formal gestures that prioritize lived experience over decorative elaboration. The compositional achievement of this interior environment resides in its masterful material dialogue pairing the industrial severity of board-formed concrete structural elements with the organic warmth of linear wood ceiling treatments and richly figured dining furniture, creating a sophisticated tension between cool and warm, hard and yielding, manufactured and natural that animates the space with textural and chromatic interest while maintaining overall compositional harmony through tonal restraint and geometric discipline. The concrete surfaces reveal the characteristic impressions of wooden formwork including horizontal striations and circular tie-hole punctuations that transform utilitarian structural necessity into textural narrative, celebrating process and making method while providing visual relief across otherwise monolithic gray planes, demonstrating how industrial materials thoughtfully deployed can achieve aesthetic sophistication and haptic invitation rather than cold austerity. The ceiling plane treatment in honey-toned wood establishes an enveloping warmth overhead that psychologically grounds the expansive open volume, the linear grain patterns creating rhythmic banding that guides visual movement longitudinally through the space while their natural chromatic warmth counterbalances the cool neutrality of stone and concrete below, illustrating the interior designer's understanding of how material distribution across vertical planes influences spatial perception and affective experience. The dining ensemble commands attention through its substantial walnut table preserving natural edge detail that honors the tree's original form, surrounded by sculptural seating whose curved backs and tapered legs demonstrate mid-century modern design heritage reinterpreted through contemporary sensibility, while the trio of matte black hemisphere pendants suspended at thoughtfully staggered heights provides focused illumination and compositional punctuation, their scale and material weight anchoring the dining zone within the larger open environment. The integrated kitchen credenza in pale blonde wood veneer maintains material continuity with the ceiling while providing chromatic contrast to the darker dining furniture, its clean-lined minimalist aesthetic suggesting Scandinavian design principles or contemporary iterations of natural material modernism, while the flush-mounted television and discreet shelving demonstrate how contemporary residential interiors must negotiate technological integration within material-forward aesthetic frameworks. Perhaps most significant to the spatial success of this environment appears the treatment of natural light through floor-to-ceiling translucent vertical louvers that veil extensive glazing, transforming potentially harsh direct sunlight into soft diffused ambient illumination that bathes interior surfaces in gentle luminosity without glare or dramatic shadow, creating atmospheric conditions conducive to both visual comfort and material revelation as the filtered daylight articulates surface textures and wood grain patterns while maintaining overall spatial brightness and connection to exterior conditions. The flooring transition between polished large-format stone tiles in circulation zones and pale wood planking in living areas demonstrates functional zoning through material shift while maintaining visual continuity through shared horizontal linearity and neutral tonal range, illustrating how contemporary open-plan residential design achieves spatial definition without resorting to walls or rigid separation. The perspectival depth created through single-point linear recession draws the eye through successive spatial layers from foreground dining zone through middle-ground kitchen integration to background living area, each zone maintaining visual connection while suggesting distinct functional character and occupancy mode from social gathering to private repose, revealing how spatial sequence and layered transparency contribute to experiential richness within unified volumes. This interior environment invites consideration of how contemporary residential design negotiates the enduring modernist aspiration toward spatial openness and material honesty while addressing human needs for textural warmth, functional clarity, and domestic comfort, suggesting that sophisticated minimalism need not sacrifice livability or sensory richness when material selections, proportional relationships, and light orchestration receive thoughtful attention and when restraint serves not austerity but rather the amplification of essential qualities and the celebration of what remains after the superfluous has been pared away.

- Unique Properties
- Catering to the resident's hobbies on planting and landscape, the design master planning thoughtfully incorporates a series of floor-to-ceiling windows around every corner, so the green scenery becomes a constant presence within the interior spaces. Great daylighting conditions allow sunlight to freely shine into interior spaces. As time elapses, the occupants can sense subtle changes in light, season, and time. Additionally, designer furniture, lighting, and artwork pieces complement the lifestyle with modernized touches.

- Production Technology
- Unlike ornamental claddings on the exterior, this fair-faced concrete residence, built across three stories, is clad with large expanses of glass and paired with wood elements. Holistically employing clean lines and stripping of ornamentation, it restores the primitive essence of architecture. The interior inherits modernized contexts, fostering a minimalist yet refined living atmosphere.
- Design Challenge
- The site is located in the downtown area, in close proximity to neighboring houses. During window planning, both daylighting and occupant privacy were taken into consideration. Moreover, in order to bridge the generational gap between technicians and craftsmen, both senior and junior engineers were involved during construction, ensuring that craftsmanship details could be passed down.
- Project Duration
- Zhubei City, Hsinchu District
- Operation Flow
- In order to create a living environment that coexists with nature, green landscapes are planted in the courtyard, terrace, and balconies throughout the three-story residence. A series of floor-to-ceiling windows allows the occupants' sightlines to be continually suffused with lush scenery as they move between rooms. Residents are able to observe subtle changes in the view as the seasons shift.
- Research
- Extending the exterior wood elements, the use of natural wood can be found from the floor to the ceiling. Paying homage to traditional wood lacquerware craftsmanship, most wooden surfaces are finished in a lacquered shine, elevating the artistry into everyday life.
- Inspiration
- In considering planting, we explore the relationship between the vegetation and the vessel that holds it. Reimagining the function of the vessel, the residence is a huge carrier where the residents live in and that demarcates the boundaries between the interior and the outdoors. Situated in a fast-paced downtown area, this project is built in a fair-faced concrete structure as a tranquil hideaway from the hustle and bustle in the downtown, offering the residents a place to spend their retirement years and for the next two generations of the family to live in.
