About White Residential House

White is a residential interior design for a home of 238 square meters in Taichung City, Taiwan. The scheme uses a pure white palette, soft curves and natural materials. Arcs in the sofa back, the television wall and the ceiling guide movement and conceal the main bedroom entrance. Mineral paint with low formaldehyde content and white stone with wavy patterns add texture. Indirect lighting at 3000 kelvin creates a warm atmosphere. The layout balances shared areas with private zones, supporting calm and comfortable daily living.

Chia Wei Chang's White Residential House engages the evolving dialogue within contemporary residential interior design concerning the calibration of minimalist formal vocabularies with the experiential warmth and psychological comfort essential to domestic environments, positioning itself within traditions of spatial restraint and material discipline that trace lineages through modernist pioneers while adapting these principles to present-day sensibilities regarding livability and sensory richness. The designer demonstrates considerable accomplishment in spatial orchestration, crafting a sequence of interconnected domestic zones that maintain visual unity through chromatic restraint and formal consistency while establishing clear functional differentiation through subtle shifts in architectural articulation, ceiling plane modulation, and furnishing arrangement, the progression from foreground living territory through transitional circulation space to background dining area unfolding with choreographic precision that rewards both immediate apprehension and sustained contemplation. The chromatic achievement resides in the sophisticated manipulation of an ostensibly limited palette, where variations of white, gray, and warm neutrals create unexpected richness through careful attention to undertone relationships, surface finish differentiation, and the interplay between matte and reflective materials, the designer demonstrating that chromatic restraint need not result in visual monotony when supported by rigorous material selection and precise tonal calibration, while strategic deployment of darker gray and black elements provides necessary visual anchoring and prevents the predominantly pale scheme from dissolving into atmospheric vagueness. The technical facility evident in the realization of the curved ceiling plane deserves particular recognition, this element appearing to flow seamlessly across the spatial expanse with consistent radius and flawless surface finish, the curved form serving multiple functions simultaneously by creating a sense of protective enclosure that counters the potential vastness of the open plan, diffusing light evenly through its continuous white surface, and introducing organic softness that tempers the orthogonal geometries dominating the floor plan and vertical elements. The designer's handling of textural variation within the constrained material palette demonstrates mature aesthetic judgment, the rhythmic fluting of the vertical wall surface adjacent to the media display providing dimensional interest through shadow modulation, the veined stone or marble surfaces introducing natural pattern that enlivens without overwhelming, and the varied upholstery textures of the seating elements contributing tactile richness that invites physical engagement, these textural strategies collectively preventing the space from reading as excessively austere or visually flat despite the limited chromatic range. The compositional strategy reveals understanding of classical principles adapted to contemporary spatial conditions, the asymmetrical balance maintaining visual stability through careful distribution of mass and void, the progression of spatial layers creating depth through overlapping planes in the tradition of atmospheric perspective, and the selective placement of vertical elements establishing rhythm that guides visual movement through the environment while maintaining sufficient openness to preserve spatial flow, the designer successfully negotiating the perennial tension between definition and openness that characterizes open-plan residential design. Thematically, the work appears to explore possibilities for contemporary domestic tranquility through aesthetic restraint and formal clarity, suggesting that psychological comfort and visual serenity emerge through disciplined editing of material and chromatic stimuli rather than through decorative accumulation, the space inviting contemplation of how minimalist design principles can be adapted to residential contexts in ways that honor both the modernist imperative toward formal reduction and the human need for warmth, comfort, and sensory engagement. The integration of technology through the large-scale display screen demonstrates sensitivity to contemporary domestic realities, the element incorporated architecturally rather than appearing as afterthought, its dark surface when inactive functioning as compositional counterweight to lighter surrounding surfaces while its fluted backdrop transforms a potentially stark technological presence into an opportunity for textural articulation. The lighting strategy evidences sophisticated understanding of how layered illumination sources create atmospheric depth and functional flexibility, the combination of recessed ambient fixtures, integrated architectural lighting, and controlled natural daylight allowing graduated luminosity that enhances spatial modeling and material expression while accommodating varied activities and times of day, the designer avoiding both the flatness that results from single-source illumination and the visual clutter that can accompany over-complicated lighting schemes. What questions might this environment pose regarding the continuing relevance and adaptation of minimalist design principles in domestic contexts where human comfort, technological integration, and aesthetic refinement must coexist, and how successfully does the space demonstrate that formal restraint and sensory richness constitute complementary rather than opposing aspirations in contemporary residential interior design?

Production Technology
The design for this residence prioritizes creating a harmonious blend of functionality and conceptual depth. We employed a user centric design methodology, focusing on the needs of the university student residents for simplicity and comfort.

Key Techniques & Materials:
Curved Forms: The extensive use of arcs (sofa back, TV wall, ceiling) was crucial. This was not merely aesthetic; it served practical purposes like concealing the main bedroom entrance and guiding views. We meticulously planned these curves for flow and visual softness.
Minimalist Palette: Adhering to the simple client brief, we opted for a limited material and color scheme.
Mineral Paint: Selected for its environmental benefits (low formaldehyde) and subtle, tactile texture, moving beyond plain white.
Modern White Stone : Used consistently throughout the space, this natural stone with its wavy patterns was chosen to introduce organic elements, conceptualized as urban parks within the home.
Conceptual Urban Landscape: This abstract idea drove specific design choices. We intentionally varied cabinet heights and volumes to mimic city architecture. The blue art symbolizes the sky, white elements represent buildings and the stone, green spaces. This layering of meaning enriches the minimalist aesthetic.
Indirect Lighting: Extensive use of 3000K indirect and recessed lighting creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, crucial for a comfortable student living space.
Our process involved careful consideration of how each element contributes to both the practical functionality and the overarching conceptual narrative of the indoor urban jungle. This allowed us to deliver a design that is not only aesthetically pleasing and functional but also uniquely immersive.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge was preserving a sense of purity within the 238 sqm layout while addressing the varied needs of a family of three. A white based palette demands flawless execution; material selection and lighting had to be meticulously tested to avoid a flat or sterile effect. Another key challenge was realizing the seamless curves throughout the space, requiring high-precision craftsmanship and on-site bending adjustments. Balancing design intention with construction feasibility became a defining aspect of the project character and creativity.
Project Duration
June 2024 finished in Taichung City, Taiwan
Operation Flow
The project emphasizes natural interaction between space and its occupants. Curved circulation paths guide users gently through the environment, from the entrance to the living and dining areas, then toward the private zones. The layout balances connection and privacy, allowing each family member to enjoy individual space while engaging in shared moments in the common areas. The interplay of lighting and material shifts offers varied sensory experiences throughout the day, cultivating a warm and emotionally resonant daily rhythm.
Research
The design process began with indepth interviews with the homeowners to understand their preference for minimalist living and material safety. We studied how each family member interacts within the space, particularly the transition between communal and private areas. Multiple layout simulations were conducted based on the 238 sqm site conditions to optimize circulation and natural lighting. The selection of mineral based coatings and low formaldehyde, fire-resistant materials was based on product testing and case analysis to ensure a healthy, durable, and visually coherent environment.
Inspiration
Inspiration and motives revolve around creating a dynamic, simple, and comfortable living space for university students, while also incorporating conceptual elements related to urban landscapes.
