About Albion Gardens Residential

Albion Gardens is a residential interior design for a 50 year old home in Hong Kong. The renovation covers 1,534 square feet and is inspired by the depth and layering of forests. Wood veneer, sintered stone and natural marble are used to create a calm setting. Cabinetry surfaces are divided into layers of different depths, and lighting is integrated between the cabinets. Large storage capacity is provided without a plain or repetitive appearance. The aim is to turn an aged residence into a healthy and elegant living space.

Terence Wong's Albion Gardens Residential exemplifies contemporary residential design's engagement with spatial openness, material refinement, and the orchestration of domestic experience through carefully calibrated architectural and interior interventions that prioritize fluidity, light, and tactile richness within a restrained aesthetic framework. The design appears to work within established conventions of luxury apartment interiors while demonstrating particular sensitivity to proportion, material selection, and the experiential qualities that transform functional dwelling spaces into environments supporting both practical living and aesthetic contemplation. The compositional achievement rests substantially in the work's handling of spatial sequence, establishing clear zones for living, dining, and food preparation while maintaining visual and circulatory connection through strategic placement of semi-transparent dividers, consistent material vocabulary, and perspectival alignment that draws the eye through the layered domestic landscape. The color strategy reveals considerable sophistication, building upon a neutral foundation of warm whites and soft taupes that maximize light reflection and spatial expansiveness, then introducing carefully measured accents through golden timber surfaces whose vertical ribbing catches illumination and creates rhythmic visual texture, balanced by darker charcoal elements in furniture and accent surfaces that provide chromatic grounding without introducing heaviness. The lighting design demonstrates multilayered thinking, combining recessed architectural downlights for ambient illumination, concealed linear LED strips that emphasize material transitions and architectural reveals with gentle luminous halos, and focal pendant fixtures that establish hierarchy and intimacy within specific zones, the cumulative effect suggesting attention to how illumination shapes spatial experience across different times of day and functional requirements. Material selection appears guided by principles of authenticity and tactile variety within chromatic restraint, the palette encompassing smooth plaster, soft upholstery fabrics, polished stone, ribbed timber veneer, and brushed metals, each contributing distinctive textural character while maintaining overall tonal harmony. The spatial construction employs one-point perspective with considerable discipline, major architectural lines and furniture edges converging toward the distant kitchen, creating a sense of procession and spatial depth that invites movement through the domestic sequence while vertical elements provide counterpoint rhythm. The work seems to reference contemporary minimalist residential traditions emphasizing openness, material honesty, and restrained ornamentation, suggesting dialogue with design philosophies that value experiential quality over decorative excess, spatial flow over compartmentalization, and the celebration of carefully chosen materials over surface embellishment. Thematically, the design invites consideration of contemporary domesticity's evolving character, how residential interiors can provide sanctuary and aesthetic satisfaction while supporting the practical requirements of daily life, and the role of material selection, proportion, and light in creating environments that elevate ordinary experience without resorting to ostentation. How might this approach to residential design, with its emphasis on spatial continuity, material authenticity, and experiential refinement, offer alternative models for contemporary dwelling that balance comfort with sophistication and practicality with aesthetic aspiration?

Production Technology
The project employs wood veneer, sintered stone, natural marble, and tailored lighting to enrich spatial effects. Cabinetry surfaces are divided into layers of varied depths to create dimension and avoid monotony. Lighting is integrated between cabinets, blending technical precision with natural materiality to enhance both aesthetics and function.
Design Challenge
The greatest challenge was reconciling the client's demand for large storage with the risk of dull cabinetry design. Internally, the project dealt with the historic limitations of a 50-year-old building. Externally, constraints included material production possibilities and construction standards. Through layered material use and integrated lighting, the design overcame these obstacles.
Project Duration
The project started in February 2023 and finished inOctober 2023 in Hong Kong, China.
Operation Flow
The design enhances daily life by turning cabinetry into both storage and visual centerpiece. Layered materials and integrated lighting create a sense of depth, transforming a purely functional element into a design feature. Residents interact with a space that is practical yet uplifting, balancing storage, aesthetics, and comfort seamlessly.
Research
Applied design research focused on old building renovation and user needs. Objectives were to balance storage capacity with aesthetics. Methods included site analysis and user interviews. Data on material performance and space usage guided the process. Results showed that layered cabinetry and lighting integration improved both function and beauty, offering insights into sustainable urban housing renewal.
Inspiration
The project is inspired by the imagery of forests, translating their depth, layering, and natural beauty into interior form. Guided by the client's needs and the building's renewal, the design team used wood, stone, and natural textures to create a tranquil environment that embodies the artistic conception of a forest while enhancing daily living.
