The Design

About Veil House Villa Interior

Veil House is a 600 square meter villa interior that balances privacy and openness through layered light, measured proportion, and quiet materials. Large format marble and oak parquet create a calm base, while wood veneer, smoked glass, and brushed brass add depth and warmth. An open riser stair with integrated led lighting anchors circulation and carries daylight between levels. Automated lighting scenes, hydronic underfloor heating, and variable refrigerant flow systems work together for comfort and energy efficiency, with concealed storage and acoustic layers preserving clarity.

Interviews

Design Interview

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

Veil House was conceived around the idea of balancing openness and privacy within a contemporary living environment. The project explores how layered light, filtered transparency, and spatial continuity can create calm and emotionally engaging experiences. Rather than relying on excessive gestures, the design focuses on subtle transitions, natural materials, and carefully controlled atmospheres that allow the space to feel both refined and deeply livable.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

The main focus was creating a timeless interior experience where comfort, atmosphere, and functionality coexist naturally. The intention was to design a residence that feels quiet and immersive while maintaining strong spatial fluidity and openness. Material continuity, daylight movement, and carefully integrated systems were all considered essential in achieving a cohesive and balanced living environment.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

Veil House represents an ongoing exploration of emotionally driven contemporary living spaces. The project will continue informing future residential works that prioritize atmosphere, human experience, and understated elegance. The broader intention is to further develop design approaches that integrate technology, comfort, and spatial calmness without visual excess.

Unique Properties
Veil House is a 600 m2 villa interior that balances privacy and openness through layered light, proportion, and quiet materials. Large format marble and oak parquet set a calm base; wood veneer, smoked glass, and brushed brass add depth. A floating stair with integrated led lighting anchors circulation. Automated scenes, hydronic underfloor heating, vrf and concealed storage deliver comfort and efficiency while acoustic layers keep the atmosphere refined.
Dimensions & Packaging
Gross Floor Area: 600 m2. Structure: Reinforced concrete frame. Clear Heights: 2.80 to 3.20 m. Floors: Oak parquet and large format marble. Walls: Wood veneer panels with acoustic backing. Glazing: Thermally broken frames with Low E double glazing. Lighting: Automated led coves and profiles with sensors. hvac: Variable refrigerant flow with heat recovery. Heating: Hydronic underfloor. Production Technology
Reinforced concrete frame with internal fit out in dry construction. Large format marble slabs templated on site and book matched; stone adhesives and color matched epoxy grout. Engineered oak parquet, matte oiled. Wood veneer wall panels on acoustic backing with concealed clips. Smoked glass partitions with minimal frames. Brushed brass trims and pvd coated inlays. Integrated led coves and profiles on dimmable drivers. vrf hvac and hydronic underfloor heating.
Design Challenge
The challenge was to open living areas to landscape while preserving privacy, acoustic comfort and energy targets on a tight urban plot. West sun, neighborhood noise and compact shafts limited options. The solution combined a recessed circulation spine, layered shading, high mass stone finishes, acoustic backing and discreet storage. Hydronic underfloor heating and vrf, coordinated by a building management system, stabilized climate without visual clutter.
Research
Type: Applied design research. Objectives: daylight access, acoustic comfort, energy efficiency, intuitive operation. Methodology: iterative prototyping and simulation within BIM. Tools: climate and daylight analysis, UDI and DA calculations, lighting mockups, acoustic modeling, energy balance. Participants: design team, mep consultants, client. Results: higher daylight autonomy and lower glare. Insights and impact: courtyard oriented layout, automated scenes, high mass finishes and acoustic backing improve comfort and provide a replicable model for urban villas.
Inspiration
The project is inspired by the valley's soft daylight and a brief for serene hospitality in a dense urban setting. We studied how light can shape privacy, testing scene based lighting and shading to keep rooms luminous yet discreet. Material trials on marble veining, oak tone, smoked glass and brushed brass defined a tactile, calm palette. Reworked classical rhythms frame views, guide circulation and temper noise.
Project Duration
The design phase started in September 2024 in Istanbul and finished in January 2025 in Istanbul. The project was presented to the client in January 2025 and documented for publication in the same month.
Operation Flow
A centralized building management system coordinates lighting, shading, hvac and security. Tunable led scenes animate coves and stair reveals, while presence and daylight sensors modulate intensity through the day. Hydronic underfloor heating provides stable comfort and vrf units handle peaks. Sliding partitions and concealed storage keep circulation clear for effortless daily use and hosting.
