About Wide Paned Surface Table

Wide Paned Surface is a dining table designed for use in several settings within the home. The table is made of ash wood and measures 1800 mm by 800 mm by 760 mm. The legs are carved from single solid wood blocks in a lattice form inspired by traditional Eastern architecture, which supports structural stability. The tabletop is 4 cm thick and the edges are inlaid with natural rattan, a detail that recalls woven eaves and helps prevent cracking. An eco-friendly paint finish is applied. The table can serve family dining, home working and children's activities.

Shiwen Xiao's Wide Paned Surface Table represents a sophisticated contribution to contemporary furniture design that bridges structural engineering and ornamental articulation through its distinctive perforated support system, situating itself within a lineage of minimalist functional objects that honor both industrial fabrication capabilities and architectural spatial thinking. The design demonstrates notable compositional intelligence in its resolution of the fundamental desk typology, transforming the conventional four-legged or pedestal support into two solid panels that function simultaneously as structural elements and visual screens, each punctuated by a rhythmic arrangement of rectangular apertures that create dynamic figure-ground relationships and introduce measured transparency to what might otherwise read as monolithic mass. This perforated motif carries rich architectural resonances, evoking traditional mashrabiya screens, mid-century breeze blocks, and contemporary parametric facades, while the staggered brick-pattern arrangement introduces syncopated rhythm that activates the vertical plane and invites light to penetrate and pattern the floor plane beneath. The chromatic restraint, limiting the palette to matte black surfaces, proves particularly effective in allowing formal qualities and spatial relationships to achieve primacy, the absence of chromatic distraction focusing attention on proportion, void, and silhouette. Technical execution appears refined, with crisp edges suggesting precision laser-cutting or CNC fabrication, uniform matte powder-coating eliminating visual noise, and careful attention to joint resolution where horizontal work surface meets vertical supports. The design engages thoughtfully with human scale, the desk height and depth appearing calibrated to ergonomic standards while the overall footprint suggests substantial presence without spatial domination. Thematically, the work explores tensions between opacity and transparency, mass and lightness, industrial severity and decorative play, ultimately achieving synthesis where structural necessity becomes aesthetic opportunity. The perforations function practically, reducing material mass and visual weight while potentially facilitating cable management, yet they transcend mere utility to become the design's defining ornamental gesture, a democratic pattern that treats all surface area with equal decorative attention rather than concentrating ornament at privileged zones. This approach aligns with broader contemporary design discourse around ornament's rehabilitation following modernism's ornamental prohibition, suggesting that pattern and decoration can emerge organically from structural logic rather than being applied superficially. The table invites consideration of how furniture mediates between body and space, how domestic objects can carry architectural ambition at intimate scale, and how industrial materials and processes might generate new aesthetic vocabularies that honor both functional performance and visual poetry, proposing that everyday working surfaces can elevate daily experience through considered form that rewards sustained attention and use.

Production Technology
The tabletop and table legs are made from premium ash wood with clear grain, a warm texture, and at least 3 cm thickness for structural stability. The 4 cm thick tabletop with edges inlaid with natural rattan, adds a touch of natural charm and decorative appeal. The table legs are carved from single solid wood blocks rather than assembled from multiple pieces for added strength and durability. Finished with the ecofriendly paint from Dabao, the surface is safe, nonirritating, and ready for use.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was integrating Eastern architectural elements into modern furniture while ensuring structural stability and durability. The table legs are carved from single solid wood blocks into a lattice form, preserving architectural beauty and structural strength. The tabletop is inlaid with natural rattan, recalling traditional eaves and preventing cracking. The design reinterprets traditional essence through a minimalist form, blending Eastern aesthetics with contemporary life.
Project Duration
Designed and developed in Chengdu in January 2025, the project was launched on Tmall in September of the same year.
Operation Flow
The table is carefully designed according to ergonomic principles, with precise height and leg spacing for comfortable seating in different scenarios. Its adaptable form and sturdy practical structure allow it to serve multiple roles as a family dining table, an office or study desk, a tea table for guests, or a display table. The table adapts to various needs and scenarios, functioning as practical furniture and an extension of lifestyle.
Research
As modern living spaces expand, the demand for multifunctional furniture continues to grow. By studying existing market offerings, the design team saw opportunities to improve furniture that combines structural stability with aesthetic appeal. This design employs solid wood cut from full panels and rattan inlay techniques to enhance durability, visual depth, and adaptability to various scenarios. Environmentally friendly materials are also used to ensure safety and sustainability.
Inspiration
The design is inspired by Eastern architectural aesthetics and the natural landscape. The square and orderly table legs draw on the brick texture and lattice patterns of traditional Chinese buildings, enhancing structural stability and architectural beauty. The warm and natural tabletop edge is inlaid with a band of rattan, inspired by the eaves of traditional buildings woven from straw and rattan, softening the heaviness of the dark wood surface and bringing liveliness to the overall design.
