About Flou Console

Flou is a console table made of cast resin. Each console is composed of three to four resin slabs that form the legs, the top and the tie members. The slabs are cast in custom molds, then routed, grooved and assembled with simple joinery for stability. Factory remnants are preserved inside the resin, and tinted variations are also produced. The translucent material shifts between clear and hazy as light and shadow change. The minimal form measures 1600 mm in width, 400 mm in depth and 750 mm in height.

Wriver's Flou Console engages the contemporary discourse surrounding material innovation in studio furniture, positioning itself within the flourishing intersection of functional design and material-driven sculptural practice that has emerged prominently in recent decades as designers and makers explore the expressive potential of synthetic and composite materials traditionally associated with industrial production rather than artisanal craft. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of resin casting techniques, achieving remarkable control over translucency, color saturation, and the deliberate distribution of organic inclusions that animate the material field with visual complexity reminiscent of natural stone formations, particularly the mottled warmth of travertine or the speckled character of terrazzo, yet achieved through entirely synthetic means that celebrate rather than disguise their manufactured nature. Compositionally, the console achieves elegant formal resolution through its elongated horizontal proportion that emphasizes the contemplative quality of the low-profile silhouette, while the substantial supporting elements create satisfying visual weight and structural legibility that grounds the lighter-reading translucent tabletop, and the generous bullnose edge treatment throughout demonstrates refined attention to tactile experience and visual softness that humanizes the geometric severity of the rectangular schema. The H-shaped support configuration reveals intelligent structural thinking, with the central bridging panel creating visual interest through its layered spatial relationships while simultaneously reinforcing the leg elements and providing potential functional utility as a display surface or shelf zone, and this tripartite vertical division establishes satisfying proportional relationships that prevent monotony across the extended horizontal span. The material handling represents the work's most distinctive achievement, as the suspended inclusions distributed throughout the resin matrix create endless moments of visual discovery that reward extended contemplation, with each particle reading as an individual event while contributing to the overall textural field, and the translucency allows light to penetrate the material depth creating internal luminosity that shifts with viewing angle and ambient conditions, transforming the console from static object into subtly dynamic presence that participates in the changing light conditions of its environment. The warm chromatic range anchored in honey, amber, and golden tones establishes emotional resonance suggesting warmth, organic connection, and natural beauty despite the synthetic material origins, and this palette positions the work within approachable luxury rather than cool austerity, making the contemporary design language feel inviting rather than distancing. The work extends lineages established by pioneering material experimentalists who recognized the aesthetic potential of industrial plastics and composites, while simultaneously participating in the contemporary craft revival that values visible process, maker's hand, and the narrative embedded in material transformation from raw components to finished form. How might this exploration of transparency, suspension, and material storytelling invite reflection on the boundaries between natural and synthetic, industrial and artisanal, functional object and sculptural presence?

Unique Properties
Flou Tables in resin explore translucency, light, and shadow as central design elements. Prototyping began with the idea of preserving overlooked by-products within resin, giving them permanence, and later also evolved into tinted variations that adapt to different spaces. With minimal forms, the tables highlight details, depth, and shifting opacity. Flou stands apart for its poetic materiality, offering furniture that invites pause and reflection in a fast-moving world.

Production Technology
Each Flou Table is composed of three to four resin slabs - legs, top, and tie members, cast in custom molds. Parts are routed and grooved, assembled with simple joinery for stability and clarity of form. The process evolved through extensive trials, addressing challenges of mold feasibility, joinery, and resin overheating. Through adaptive techniques, optimized pouring methods and repurposing factory setups, we achieved consistency and scaled the process for larger furniture.
Design Challenge
The hardest part was mastering resin at a furniture scale. Early molds failed, joinery proved unstable, and overheating led to cracks. After months of trials, we refined casting, adapted techniques, and repurposed factory setups to stabilize production. The creative challenge lay in balancing minimal form with expressive materiality. Externally, resins unpredictable behavior, scarce in depth knowledge, and production limits tested us, while internally, the drive was to merge function with meaning.
Project Duration
Research on material development and production optimization began in June 2024. The products were designed, prototyped and refined through late 2024 and early 2025. By February 2025, the designs were production-ready and showcased at India Design Week in New Delhi, India.
Operation Flow
The Flou Console works as everyday furniture while also standing as a sculptural piece. It changes with light and shadow, appearing clear at times and hazy at others, inviting you to notice new details each time. Made from simple resin slabs joined together with care, it is strong and stable yet visually light. Flou goes beyond just being useful, adding a calm, timeless character that makes any space feel more refined and reflective.
Research
The research was applied and hands-on, aimed at finding ways to reuse materials and make resin casting work at the scale of furniture. We set objectives to achieve stability, durability, and visual clarity. Through repeated prototyping and trials, using simple tools, temperature checks, and molds, we tested over 120 samples. The results gave us stable methods for casting and joinery. Alongside, design guided the process, shaping minimal forms that elevate light, shadow, and depth, turning technical research into meaningful furniture.
Inspiration
Flou Series draws inspiration from intersecting architectural planes and postmodern explorations of transparency. Evolving from material experimentation, resin was chosen for its ability to capture depth, light, and shadow. The factory remnants and curated tints add texture and tone, allowing each piece to respond uniquely to its surroundings, creating furniture that feels contemplative and timeless.
