Grand Interview

The custom CNC-carved wood panels in Antalya Residental represent a striking synthesis of precision fabrication and sensory depth, achieving shadow play and tactile rhythm that few contemporary residential interiors articulate so cohesively. What was the design and fabrication decision-making process behind commissioning these bespoke elements, and how did BKM Architecture Studio ensure that their visual texture remained in dialogue with the broader material narrative threading through every surface of Antalya Residental?

The CNC-carved wood panels in Antalya Residential were designed not as decorative features, but as an integral part of the spatial experience. Our goal was not simply to create a surface treatment, but to introduce depth, rhythm, and a subtle dialogue with light throughout the space. As daylight moves across the interior, the panels create changing patterns of shadow and texture, adding warmth and character to the environment. At the same time, they work in harmony with the natural stone and wood finishes, reinforcing the project’s cohesive material language. Ultimately, these elements became more than a design detail; they became a medium through which light, materiality, and craftsmanship come together. In doing so, they support Antalya Residential’s core ambition: creating a living environment that is sophisticated yet human, calm yet full of character.

Warm minimalism and Mediterranean aesthetics are concepts that many designers aspire to interpret but rarely achieve with such spatial clarity as seen in Antalya Residental. How did BKM Architecture Studio define the boundary between restraint and warmth within Antalya Residental, and in what ways does this balance reflect a broader conversation about how contemporary interiors can honor regional identity without resorting to literal or decorative cultural references?

For BKM Architecture Studio, warm minimalism is not about reducing elements, but about emphasizing what truly adds value. In Antalya Residential, we sought to create warmth not through decorative features, but through light, materiality, texture, and proportion. Every element was carefully selected to enhance the users’ comfort, well-being, and emotional connection with the space, shaping a meaningful living experience. We interpreted the Mediterranean influence not as a style, but as a way of living. Rather than reproducing familiar cultural symbols or decorative references, we focused on the qualities that define Mediterranean life: abundant natural light, natural materials, a strong visual connection to the sea, and a spatial continuity that softens the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. This approach allowed us to create a calm and balanced atmosphere where residents can maintain a constant connection with both nature and the unique landscape of the region. For us, regional identity is not something that should be displayed, but something that should be felt. Antalya Residential aims to establish a meaningful connection with its location through spatial experience, material authenticity, and a timeless design approach, rather than through direct cultural references.

The research phase of Antalya Residental, which explored how tactile materials such as stone, wood, and textile surfaces influence emotional response and spatial well-being, touches on a growing body of knowledge connecting sensory environments to human health and comfort. How did this research directly shape the material selections and spatial sequencing within Antalya Residental, and what implications does BKM Architecture Studio believe these findings hold for the future of evidence-informed residential interior design?

Research played a fundamental role in shaping Antalya Residential. During the concept development phase, we evaluated not only the impact of natural materials, but also the influence of natural daylight, sea views, and spatial flow on users’ emotional perception, comfort, and overall well-being. Our goal was to go beyond aesthetic decision-making and better understand how people experience and connect with the spaces they inhabit.Materials such as natural stone, wood, and textiles were selected not only for their visual qualities, but also for their ability to foster a sense of belonging, calmness, and emotional connection. The spatial organization was developed with the same philosophy. Social areas were designed to encourage openness and interaction, while private spaces were carefully arranged to provide a gradual transition into calmer and more intimate environments. This approach created a balanced living experience where residents can both come together and retreat into their own personal spaces when needed. Antalya Residential reflects our belief that successful residential design should be shaped not only by aesthetics, but also by how people feel within a space. We believe the future of residential design will increasingly focus on human-centered approaches that respond not only to physical needs, but also to emotional well-being and quality of life. This project is the result of a design philosophy that seeks a meaningful balance between aesthetics, spatial experience, and well-being.

Production Technology
The interior was realized through precise material detailing and controlled surface transitions. Large-format stone slabs, natural wood veneers, and matte metal accents were combined to highlight tactile harmony. Custom CNC-carved wall panels accentuate depth and shadow, while integrated lighting calibrates tone and ambiance. Craftsmanship and fabrication techniques were coordinated to ensure seamless junctions and a consistent material narrative throughout the project.
Design Challenge
The main creative challenge was to translate Mediterranean warmth into a contemporary interior without relying on traditional motifs. Achieving this required balancing sculptural forms with refined material transitions. The design resolves this tension by using texture, light modulation, and layered spatial depth to create a calm yet expressive environment, demonstrating how emotional warmth and architectural clarity can coexist.
Research
The research phase focused on how tactile materials influence emotional response and spatial well-being. Studies explored the sensory balance between stone, wood, and textile textures, examining how warmth and calm can coexist with contemporary forms. The final spatial language expresses a measured softness supported by lighting and material layering, demonstrating how atmosphere can be shaped through craftsmanship and sensory awareness.
Inspiration
The design draws inspiration from Antalya’s soft coastal light and the calm rhythm of the Mediterranean landscape. Gentle curves, tactile stone accents, and warm natural finishes reinterpret the region’s serene atmosphere into a contemporary living environment. The interior embodies a balance between sculptural form and emotional comfort, creating spaces where light, texture, and material depth evoke a sense of calm, connection, and subtle luxury.
Project Duration
The project is located in Lara, Antalya. Design commenced in March 2024 and was completed in May 2024.
Operation Flow
The spatial flow is designed to guide users through sequences of light, texture, and warmth. Movement unfolds gradually from gathering areas to more intimate zones, allowing the environment to adapt to daily living patterns. The relationship between natural daylight and layered interior lighting establishes a consistent emotional tone, encouraging a sense of belonging, calmness, and quiet social interaction within a unified spatial rhythm.
