Interviews

Grand Interview

The conceptual framework of Aura Park Recreation Space, which explores spacetime, artificial nature, and imagined reality within a single 1,588-square-meter installation, is a remarkable achievement that earned recognition at the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award. Could you walk us through how the initial idea of merging these philosophical abstractions with physical space first crystallized in your mind, and what pivotal moment convinced you that a recreational installation in Hangzhou's West Lake district was the right vessel for such an ambitious cosmic narrative?

As audiences worldwide grow increasingly hungry for experiences that transcend the ordinary, Aura Park Recreation Space positions itself at the fascinating intersection of physical architecture and virtual dimensionality. How did the design team determine where to draw the boundary between the tangible and the imagined within Aura Park Recreation Space, and in what ways do you believe this balance reshapes visitors' expectations of what a recreational environment can genuinely offer to communities seeking deeper, more meaningful leisure experiences?

The integration of customized three-dimensional curved LED panels, transparent LED screens, and full-spectrum programmable light strips within Aura Park Recreation Space represents a highly sophisticated convergence of technology and sensory design. How did the extensive research into visual animations, resonance production, and textured materials inform the specific technological choices made for Aura Park Recreation Space, and what broader implications do you see these innovations holding for the future of immersive public environments that seek to blur the line between the built world and the virtual one?

Production Technology
Lighting and visual technologies include: dynamic lighting structure in steel, customized 3D curved LED panels, transparent LED screens, full spectrum programable LED light strips, specialized stage AV installations, tailor-made sculptures and interlinked video creations for individual panels. Main construction materials include: GRG (glass reinforced gypsum), customized metallic and textured paint, patterned marble flooring, tempered glass panels, and custom ceramic tiles, etc.
Design Challenge
Due to the complexity of interactive and immersive technologies, the project took on various challenges during the design and implementation phases. While design studies and final drawings are prepared with precise modeling and simulation, coordination with visualization and acoustic teams, as well as various engineers were conducted on-site and online on a regular basis. Testing of components and prototypes of various systems were performed to ensure manufacturing precision and installation.
Research
To create the ultimate surreal experience for all guests, the design team and digital artists conducted a lot of research on the customization, implementation and integration of visual animations, resonance production, textured materials and construction methodologies throughout the intensive design process. Specific lighting details embedded within curvilinear geometries were 3D modeled and printed throughout all stages of design investigations, prototyping and manufacturing.
Inspiration
Inspired by our evolution of human consciousness, Aura Park is conceptualized as a manifestation of an immersive and surreal leisure destination. One of the investigations is the execution between the physical and virtual dimensions through design, construction and visual technologies. Artistic ethereal sculptures, landscaping and water features are choreographed with interactive resonances, lighting and animations to create a multi-sensory experience of ascension, ecstasy and transformation.
Project Duration
The design of Aura Park was initiated in Shanghai in October 2024, and the construction in Hangzhou commenced in December 2024 and was completed in July 2025.
Operation Flow
The client team was initially involved with design discussions in 2024 during the preliminary concept phase. Due to the size and complexity of the project program, all front and back of house areas as well as specific equipment installation requirements were carefully considered during the planning phase. Numerous mock-ups and models were constructed and approved before final production and installation. Weekly on-site and video meetings were conducted to ensure progress and quality control.
