Design Interview about Insightpro AI Education Analytics
The main idea behind InsightPro is that higher education institutions are data-rich but insight-poor. The goal of this project is to build a human-centric, ethical design framework that bridges the gap between complex machine learning and non-technical educators, turning intimidating spreadsheets into intuitive, plain-language visual stories.
My main focus was to design a low-barrier interface that takes complicated predictive data and translates it into real-world institutional decisions. I wanted to eliminate the slow, manual data management silos that academic leaders typically deal with, and give them a system where they can easily spot student risks early and take action before it’s too late.
I don't have immediate plans, but I’m definitely open to evolving the design further if the right opportunity arises.
About one year of work. That covered everything from the initial user research and focus groups to the information architecture, interactive prototyping, and usability testing.
I was inspired to solve a real ethical and operational hurdle in education. Through my learning science research, I saw that critical academic decisions are often made too late because legacy tools are just too slow and descriptive. Risks sneak up on schools when student metrics aren't actively observed. I wanted to design an intelligent interface that intervenes early, identifies the exact subjects requiring intervention, and shifts the workflow from reactive to proactive.
Prefer not to disclose.
Data dashboards are usually built as dry, technical developer utilities rather than human-centered experiences. Educational ecosystems are incredibly complex and involve a lot of different stakeholders, from data analysts to curriculum specialists. I realized that bringing specialized interaction methodologies into a space dominated by confusing spreadsheets was the highest-impact way design could actually safeguard student success.
My work was inspired by academic research on Explainable AI and algorithmic bias mitigation. Structurally, I looked closely at how modern collaborative platforms handle open-ended workspaces, and I blended that with structured, conversational AI mechanics to build a fresh interactive layout.
The primary users are non-technical academic administrators, university deans, community college directors, and curriculum specialists. It also supports secondary users like institutional data analysts who need a reliable way to verify predictions, and professors looking for clear guidance on where to focus student support.

I was the sole product designer on this project, meaning I was entirely responsible for the research, product strategy, UX/UI, and visual system. However, to make sure the interface was grounded in reality, I consulted institutional data scientists and engineers to make sure the product is technically feasible.
Technology handles the heavy lifting in the background. The platform runs on advanced machine learning, including Support Vector Regression, Gradient Boosting, Random Forest Regressors, and Neural Networks. The UI's job is to act as a clear window over these algorithms, taking complex elements like campus prediction outputs and upsampled datasets and rendering them beautifully through an intuitive conversational AI sidebar.
Yes, the design is deeply data-driven. I ran qualitative focus groups with academic staff to uncover workspace pain points, mapped out user journeys to spot data management bottlenecks, and reviewed literature on learning analytics and algorithmic bias to ensure every layout aligned with proven educational science.
The biggest challenge was translating backend data science into clear visual layouts without losing accuracy. The platform uses a complex Random Forest Regressor model. Because the student data was heavily skewed toward average scores, the data team had to use upsampling to balance the model. Designing a UI that helps a non-technical user easily understand these upsampled predictive trends and grasp narrow ±2.2% prediction errors without getting overwhelmed was a challenge.
The A' Design Award is globally recognized as a premier benchmark for elite interaction and interface design. Because InsightPro tackles a universal issue, which is making highly complex, algorithmically heavy AI data accessible within complex social frameworks like education, I knew it was the perfect candidate. I wanted to showcase this methodology on an international stage and prove that enterprise data software can achieve the absolute highest standards of human-centered usability, structural transparency, and aesthetic excellence.
It deepened my expertise in designing for complex artificial intelligence and machine learning interfaces. I learned to look beyond basic UI aesthetic metrics and think deeply about algorithmic transparency, data bias, and user trust. It also sharpened my ability to independently lead a highly complex, enterprise-level product strategy from research all the way to pixel-perfect design execution.
Grand Interview about Insightpro AI Education Analytics
One important realization came during our user research with university staff. We saw that many users were not struggling because they couldn't understand data, but because existing tools presented too much information at once. They had to switch between dashboards, spreadsheets, reports, and meetings just to answer simple questions. That changed how I approached the design. Instead of building another dashboard with more charts, I focused on reducing unnecessary cognitive effort. The interface gradually reveals information, combines visualizations with plain-language explanations, and helps users move from data to insight without feeling overwhelmed. That shift became one of the guiding principles of Insightpro.
Older generation analytics tools focused almost exclusively on historical, static descriptive data, which basically meant telling an institution what went wrong long after it was too late to act. Insightpro reframes this relationship by putting clear, predictive foresight directly into the hands of frontline staff like deans, program directors, and curriculum specialists. By utilizing an advanced machine learning backend to handle high-accuracy risk forecasting, the interface allows non-technical educators to immediately pinpoint exact subject areas that need immediate attention and intervention. It bridges the gap between raw data and the people who actually support the students.
Trust was a major consideration throughout the design process. I never wanted AI to replace human judgment or become the final decision maker. Instead, the system presents predictions together with supporting information and visual context, so educators can understand why a recommendation is being made. My goal was to design AI as a decision-support tool rather than an automated authority. Additionally, since the historical training data was heavily skewed toward average performers, we performed upsampling on minority student cohorts to prevent systemic algorithmic bias against struggling or top-performing students. In the UI itself, instead of issuing a rigid judgment, I designed node-specific annotations and the "Insights Inbox" so educators can layer their own real-world context directly onto data points, keeping final decisions strictly in human hands.
InsightPro advances these dimensions simultaneously by embedding highly sophisticated backend technologies, like ensemble learning models and data imbalance upsampling inside an incredibly approachable, zero-barrier interface. Receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Software Design category validates my core belief that enterprise analytics software does not have to feel like an intimidating, dry technical utility; it can achieve elite global design standards while actively driving massive improvements to human wellbeing and institutional equity.
My qualitative focus groups and semi-structured interviews with university staff revealed that educators were bottlenecked by data isolation, manual spreadsheet management, and slow legacy tools. This research insight directly shaped my core interaction design decisions. To turn an intimidating process into something intuitive, I designed the "Insights Inbox" and the "Centralized Insights Stream". These features gather scattered notes into a clean, searchable sidebar feed and allow users to effortlessly pin discussions right onto specific data points, changing data analysis from an isolated chore into a seamless, team-driven experience.
The goal of the conversational interface was to lower the barrier to data analysis. Many users were comfortable asking questions but not writing database queries or navigating complicated dashboards. Instead of expecting users to learn the system, I wanted the system to communicate in a way that felt familiar. The interface combines natural language with visual feedback, allowing users to ask questions, generate reports, and explore insights through conversation while still providing structured visualizations to support understanding.
I think AI will become an increasingly valuable partner for educators, not by replacing expertise but by reducing repetitive work and surfacing useful insights earlier. In the future, I would like systems like Insightpro to become more personalized and proactive, helping institutions identify trends, recommend interventions, and continuously learn from outcomes. At the same time, I believe transparency and human oversight will remain essential as these technologies evolve.
I hope the lasting contribution of Insightpro is proving that interface design is the definitive element that turns advanced artificial intelligence into real-world institutional equity. We can train the most mathematically accurate predictive model in the world, but if a frontline educator or curriculum specialist cannot clearly read or trust the interface, that predictive power is completely wasted. By automating report generation and enabling real-time, node-specific collaborative annotations directly on data visualizations, Insightpro shows that human-centered product design can democratize data and actively empower the people who protect student success every day.
The hardest decision was ensuring that deep data precision and extreme aesthetic clarity could coexist beautifully across fluid, responsive layouts without one diluting the other. To solve this, I designed a visual language that responds to two distinct cognitive modalities. For intensive data review and metrics analysis, the layout adopts a high-contrast dark interface environment specifically engineered to minimize eye strain and make complex scatter plots sharply legible. Then, for reporting and sharing, it transitions fluidly into a clean, light workspace that matches standard executive documents. This layout guarantees absolute analytical depth remains legible whether you are on a desktop or a mobile device.
One lesson I learned is that successful AI products begin with understanding people rather than understanding AI. It is easy to build impressive technology, but much harder to make people feel comfortable using it. Spending time with users, observing their workflows, and testing ideas early made a huge difference throughout this project. The biggest surprise was how much users appreciated the simpler features. While AI-generated reports attracted attention, many educators found the collaborative annotations and plain-language explanations just as valuable because they made teamwork and communication much easier. That reinforced my belief that good AI design is not about making technology more visible, it is about making work easier and more understandable.
