About Point Stool

This stool focuses on visual tension through a minimalist triangular language. Three inverted legs meet at minimal contact points, achieving an elegant balance that seems to defy gravity. The subtle curvature of the legs adds organic softness to the geometry, while gaps between the seat and legs provide a refined lightness. Crafted from molded plywood, the design ensures structural strength within a slender profile. This piece functions as both a practical stool and a poetic sculpture, inviting curiosity through its quiet dissonance and beauty.

Yuina Nakada's Point Stool occupies a distinctive position within contemporary furniture design discourse, engaging longstanding conversations about geometric reduction, material expression, and the productive tension between structural necessity and aesthetic refinement that has animated design practice since the early twentieth-century emergence of functionalist modernism, the work demonstrating particular affinity with Scandinavian design traditions emphasizing natural materials, honest construction, and forms distilled to essential elements, while simultaneously resonating with Japanese design philosophy privileging spatial efficiency, modular thinking, and joinery as ornament, the stool's triangular A-frame configuration achieving structural stability through pure geometry, distributing load across two intersecting planes that meet the ground at three points, creating inherent equilibrium without requiring complex bracing or supplementary support systems, this economy of means representing sophisticated understanding of material behavior and force distribution, the choice of pale hardwood, likely birch or maple, contributing both practical durability and visual warmth, the wood's natural grain patterns providing subtle surface animation that prevents the geometric severity from reading as cold or industrial, instead grounding the piece in organic material reality, the black connector hardware visible at the seat junction represents a particularly accomplished design detail, transforming a potential weak point requiring concealment into an articulated mechanical expression, the fastening system reading as both functional necessity and deliberate aesthetic punctuation, introducing tonal contrast and visual interest precisely where structural forces concentrate, this honesty of construction aligns with material integrity principles central to modern design philosophy, refusing to disguise how components unite or pretend the object emerged whole rather than assembled from discrete parts, the chamfered seat edges demonstrate attention to tactile experience and visual refinement, softening transitions that might otherwise feel abrupt while maintaining overall geometric clarity, suggesting consideration of human interaction and embodied use beyond pure formal abstraction, the piece's compact footprint and apparent flat-pack potential speak to contemporary concerns regarding spatial efficiency, transportation logistics, and sustainable resource use, addressing practical furniture design challenges through elegant formal resolution rather than additive complexity, the overall restraint and refinement evident in proportional relationships, detail resolution, and surface treatment suggest a design process prioritizing essential qualities over decorative elaboration, each element earning its presence through contribution to structural, functional, or experiential coherence, what might initially register as simple geometric exercise reveals upon sustained attention a carefully calibrated balance of competing demands, material constraints, ergonomic requirements, and aesthetic aspirations resolved into a unified design statement, the stool invites consideration of how fundamental forms achieve timeless relevance through precise execution and thoughtful integration of making processes, material characteristics, and human needs into coherent designed artifacts that honor both utilitarian purpose and contemplative presence, one might observe how such restrained design vocabulary paradoxically expands rather than limits expressive possibility, finding richness in subtle variation, proportion, and detail rather than ornamental profusion, suggesting how less can indeed become more when reduction serves clarity rather than mere austerity.

Unique Properties
The title poinT reflects the structure's essence: point for minimal contact, and the final T for the triangle. Composed solely of triangles, this stool pursues a refined visual tension. Three legs support each other at minimal contact points, achieving an elegant equilibrium that seems to defy gravity. The soft curves of the plywood add organic softness to the geometric form, while the intentional space between the seat and legs creates a sense of lightness.

Production Technology
This stool is crafted from molded plywood, achieving both structural strength and delicate curves. To maintain visual purity, custom made metal connectors designed specifically for this triangular shape are used at the joints. These connectors are precisely concealed within the structure, making them nearly invisible even from gaps, thus preserving the space's sense of openness. A minimal clear finish highlights the natural wood grain and the refined layers of the plywood.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge was maintaining the aesthetic of floating while ensuring structural integrity. Specifically, to preserve the open gaps, the joints needed to be concealed, but this proved difficult with standard tools. To overcome this, I handcrafted custom metal connectors tailored to the unique triangular shape. Ultimately, this allowed me to overcome technical constraints and keep the original intuitive vision vividly alive within the final functional beauty.
Project Duration
The project started in June 2025 and ended in January 2026.
Operation Flow
This stool is designed for simple, intuitive use in daily life. Its defining feature is the opening between the seat and legs. This allows your hand to slip in naturally, making it easy to carry the lightweight stool. Additionally, the angled triangular legs enable efficient stacking for storage. By combining these practical elements, it offers a convenient experience in any space while maintaining a sculptural beauty.
Research
I was drawn to the beauty of the inverted triangle, pursuing a form that achieves stability with minimal contact points. Rather than relying on complex calculations, I discovered through the process of carefully engaging with the wood that natural balance emerges in the quiet moment when the angle simply settles into place. This research suggests the possibility that a designer's intuition can give form to a poetic harmony that cannot be fully explained by numerical data alone.
Inspiration
This project draws inspiration from the intrinsic beauty and structural balance inherent in triangles. By incorporating an inverted triangle into a functional stool, I aimed to achieve both a light appearance and stable practicality. The intentionally created spaces generate a quiet, airy presence without feeling heavy. These gaps allow the stool to blend naturally into its surroundings, creating a refined harmony that coexists comfortably with the space.
