Interviews
Design Interview
What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
This design is inspired by the jellyfish and its fluid movement in the darkness of the ocean. My goal was to translate the organic glow of this creature into a lighting experience that brings a sense of calm and connection with nature into space.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
My main focus was to create a lighting experience beyond pure function; an experience based on soft light, fluid form, and a modular, flexible structure that creates a sense of calm and adaptability in space and harmonizes with different spatial needs.
How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
This concept was developed over approximately three months through an iterative process of ideation, development, and refinement, leading to its final form.
Grand Interview
The Jelly Transformable Modular Lighting System has earned recognition through the A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award, one of the most prestigious international design competitions, for its remarkable fusion of sculptural beauty and functional versatility, and it is deeply compelling to consider what sparked this creative journey. Could you share the story behind the moment you first envisioned translating the bioluminescent movement of jellyfish into a modular lighting form, and what it felt like to witness that initial inspiration evolve into the finished Jelly Transformable Modular Lighting System?
The idea for Jelly emerged from studying the jellyfish, a marine organism that naturally produces a soft, living quality of light and creates a sense of spatial fluidity through its luminous presence. What interested me was not its physical form itself, but rather the way light is present and perceived as an integral part of its existence. This observation became the starting point for translating a natural quality into a design idea and gradually shaped the direction of the project.Transforming this initial concept into a buildable lighting system gave me the opportunity to see how a simple observation of nature can evolve into a series of design decisions, ultimately resulting in a tangible spatial experience of light. My goal was to create an experience in which light goes beyond its purely functional role and becomes an integral part of spatial perception.
Modular and adaptable lighting has become a significant conversation in contemporary interior design, with many designers and consumers seeking pieces that respond dynamically to changing spatial needs. How does the Jelly Transformable Modular Lighting System redefine this conversation by enabling users to transition seamlessly between floor, table, and pendant configurations, and what do you believe this level of spatial adaptability means for the way people will relate to light in their living environments going forward?
The Jelly system is based on a modular structure with adjustable joints, enabling seamless transformation between floor, table, and pendant configurations, while maintaining a unified formal identity across all states. The core idea in this design is a shift from a multi-mode lamp to a reconfigurable lighting system, where light is not defined as a fixed state but is shaped according to user needs and spatial conditions.Jelly moves modular lighting beyond a simple change of form and turns it into an experience of interaction between the user and light in space. This approach may lead, in the future, to systems in which light is not a fixed entity, but is continuously reconfigured in response to lifestyle and spatial conditions.
The use of parametric modeling to achieve the flowing, organic glass forms in the Jelly Transformable Modular Lighting System is a fascinating choice that bridges computational precision with natural aesthetics. In what ways did parametric design allow you to capture the subtle fluid motion of jellyfish more faithfully than conventional design approaches might have, and how did this technology ultimately shape the structural and visual language of the Jelly Transformable Modular Lighting System as a whole?
Parametric modeling in Jelly allowed me to design the glass forms in a way that variations in curvature and proportion are distributed continuously and according to a unified logic throughout the structure; an approach that provides greater control over continuity and fluidity compared to conventional methods.Within this framework, form is defined not as an independent volume, but as the result of relationships between components; therefore, any small change in one part directly affects the overall behavior and expression of the structure, ultimately shaping the project’s visual language.
