About The Laidback Lounge Chair

The Laidback is the observer within the Disco House universe. Never fully immersed, always slightly removed, it does not follow the atmosphere but quietly defines it. Defined by Nobilis velvet upholstery and stainless steel details, it leans into comfort while maintaining a composed presence. Rather than emphasizing function, it reflects a state of mind. Inspired by the liberated nightlife of the late 1970s and early 1980s, it captures a moment where music, rhythm and space dissolve into one another. It settles into the background, shaping space through restraint and subtle allure.

The Laidback Lounge Chair by Alp Usluduran represents a sophisticated contribution to contemporary furniture design discourse, positioning itself within the ongoing dialogue between comfort, craftsmanship, and sculptural form that has animated seating design throughout the modern era and into the present moment. This accomplished work demonstrates the designer's fluent command of organic geometry and volumetric composition, creating an enveloping form that balances protective containment with generous spatial openness, the curved backrest and wrapped armrest configuration suggesting both the archetypal embrace of traditional club chairs and the streamlined formal vocabulary of mid-twentieth-century Scandinavian and Italian design excellence. The chromatic decision to render the entire upholstered surface in a deeply saturated navy blue approaching midnight tonality reveals considerable aesthetic confidence and restraint, allowing monochromatic intensity to define the design's visual character rather than relying upon pattern, contrast, or chromatic variety, this unified color field emphasizing the sculptural qualities of the form itself while conveying sophistication, tranquility, and a nocturnal sense of intimate luxury that positions the work within residential environments as both functional seating and contemplative object. Technical execution demonstrates meticulous attention to material quality and surface refinement, the upholstery appearing as supple, finely woven textile with subtle luster suggesting velvet or performance fabric of considerable quality, while the contrasting high-gloss lacquered base in matching deep navy introduces material heterogeneity and visual interest through its mirror-smooth reflective surface that captures and multiplies ambient light, creating depth and visual complexity beneath the softer textile volumes above. The compositional pairing of primary lounge chair with complementary ottoman establishes a complete seating environment that addresses both postural variety and spatial flexibility, the ottoman's harmonious formal vocabulary and material treatment creating unified aesthetic language while its independent form suggests modular thinking and adaptable domestic arrangement, this coordination between elements revealing systematic design intelligence that extends beyond singular object creation toward considered furniture systems. The distinctive cylindrical lumbar bolster element provides both functional ergonomic support and visual punctuation, its horizontal emphasis creating counterpoint to the predominantly vertical and curved geometries while offering tactile invitation and comfort enhancement, this detail suggesting the designer's attention to both sculptural composition and embodied human experience. Formal antecedents might be traced to the organic streamlined aesthetic that emerged in mid-century furniture design, particularly the work of Franco-Scandinavian designers who synthesized sculptural ambition with ergonomic consideration and material honesty, while the volumetric confidence and surface refinement suggest ongoing dialogue with Italian luxury furniture traditions and contemporary neo-luxury movements that position domestic objects as sites of aesthetic contemplation and sensory refinement. The presentation within carefully controlled studio environment with graduated neutral background and warm directional lighting emphasizes the chair's sculptural autonomy and formal sophistication, inviting appreciation of the design as independent aesthetic achievement while simultaneously suggesting its potential integration within residential interiors as anchor element and focal presence. One might consider how this work negotiates the productive tension between furniture as functional tool and furniture as sculptural object, inviting contemplation of how domestic objects can simultaneously serve practical bodily needs and aesthetic aspirations, and how contemporary design continues to explore the eternal human desire for both physical comfort and visual beauty within the everyday environments we inhabit.

Production Technology
The Laidback is produced through a hybrid process combining cnc fabrication and handcraft. The base is cnc-cut, while the side table leg is shaped with 5-axis cnc in alignment with the digital model. The backrest is formed using molded flexible plywood. The side table features fused glass with a color finish. cnc precision and molding techniques ensure consistency and efficiency in production. Velvet upholstery, high-gloss lacquer and stainless steel details position the piece within a premium segment, while material variations allow for adaptable cost strategies.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was twofold. Conceptually, it involved translating abstract ideas such as rhythm, atmosphere and character into a coherent seating form, balancing expressive geometry with ergonomic comfort and structural integrity. Interpreting and reconstructing a cultural atmosphere that was not directly experienced, as a designer from a different generation, required an additional layer of research, imagination and reinterpretation.

From a production perspective, the project faced significant constraints due to limited initial production volume, making it difficult to engage manufacturers. As an independently developed project for SaloneSatellite and Alcova, it required self managed resources and fabrication. The complex curved geometries necessitated mold based solutions, increasing initial costs. Additionally, producing in Turkey under high taxation and import constraints led to elevated material costs, requiring direct sourcing of certain materials from Europe.
Project Duration
The project started in Istanbul in August 2025 and was completed in March 2026. It is presented as part of the Disco House collection during Milan Design Week 2026, with its official debut at Alcova Milano 2026 and SaloneSatellite 2026.
Operation Flow
The Laidback is designed for effortless use. Its low seating position naturally guides the body into a relaxed posture, supported by the ottoman. The side table is positioned within easy reach, allowing the user to place and access objects without interruption. The overall experience encourages stillness, comfort and a more passive interaction with the surrounding space.
Research
This project is based on a conceptual and experiential design research exploring the relationship between music, space and human behavior. Developed as part of the Disco House collection, it proposes a scenario for living where each object embodies a distinct character. The research builds on two core ideas: the invisible relationship between music and architecture, translated into spatial form, and the liberated, glamorous nightlife culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Through observational analysis and prototyping, the design investigates how atmosphere can be transformed into form, ergonomics and material expression.
Inspiration
The inspiration for The Laidback comes from two references. Its formal language is shaped by the relationship between music and architecture, translated into soft, continuous geometries that express rhythm and flow in space. Its visual identity draws from the glamorous nightlife of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Rather than nostalgia, it reinterprets that era through a contemporary lens, reflecting a more restrained and introspective presence within social space.
