About Birdie's Lounge Golf Club Lounge
The lounge for a golf club had be designed and constructed in 6 weeks, in time for opening day. It also had to be beautiful, functional as a lounge and appropriate for occasional golf competition awards ceremonies and other smaller events. For a 3 sided glass box in the middle of a golf course, this approach brings the greens, the sky and some notion of golf into the bar, in the colors of the furnishings and the reflections of the course in the mosaic mirror back bar. The outside views are very much a part of the interior design and experience.

- Unique Properties
- The space for the bar is a box with 3 glass walls and expansive views of the golf course. The project was to design a lounge for a golf club that could be designed and constructed in 6 weeks. It also had to be beautiful, functional as a lounge and appropriate for golf competition awards ceremonies. For a 3 sided glass box in the middle of a golf course, the best approach was to bring the greens, the sky and some notion of golf into the bar, by the colors of the furnishings and the reflections in the mosaic mirror back bar.

- Production Technology
- In designing the bar, I had to consider how it would be constructed within 6 weeks. To accomplish this, the carcass for the bar was constructed of Brick masonry while the stone materials were ordered. The yellow onyx cladding was critical to completing the bar on time. The attachment of the Yellow Onyx is by a single large ornamental bolt. The Onyx stone slabs overlap each other with every other panel behind the other sets of panels and overlapping slightly to allow for the carcass and other construction tolerances generously.
- Design Challenge
- Although the views are really striking from this location, planning in a space with 3 glass walls and traffic paths through the middle doesn't leave many options. The shape of the space had a stagnant feeling. To break this up, a curve was introduced in the bar. The kitchen and entry/exit paths crossed the middle of the space and created a dividing line. The curve in the bar enhanced the flow through the space and created a more natural appearing path.

- 6 weeks from request to provide design services until completed construction and open. Project is in Quang Nam, Vietnam.
- Operation Flow
- The program of bar, restaurant, lounge, awards ceremony room was a tight fit. Placing the bar at the opaque wall allowed the space to be re-arranged as required for different functions. The lounge is primarily for daytime and daylight use. The free form curved bar facilitates communication - more than 2 people sitting at the curved bar can comfortably see each other when talking. The angled back bar wall enhances the effect of the mosaic mirror reflecting the view of the golf course inside the bar.

- To design this bar, research on the existing facility design need to be studied to produce a design that would work well with the rest of the facility design. The immediate inspiration was the expansive views and colors of the golf greens and sky.

To bring the golf course into the lounge and at the same time create a cool respite from the hot sun and heat outside. Create a space that was not sedate, but lively, and reminded the golfer of the game just played in a comfortable way.
To design a space with a suitable environment for the Montgomerie Links Golf Club that satisfies the need functionally and will be a place people enjoy and will return after their next visit to the course. The project had to be completed in 6 weeks.
The bar had to be designed, construction completed, furnished and ready to operate in 6 weeks. It took 3 days to design the concept and produce the design presentation. The construction drawings were completed 2 weeks into the short construction process. The first issued construction drawings were of the bar and furniture 3 days after concept. the construction started immediately following, the contractors were already on site working in other areas of the building to complete to the same deadline. Construction completed on time including furniture.
The expansive views of the beautiful golf greens, the big blue sky, golf, the 3 sided glass box with a commanding view of the course were my inspiration. I wanted the environment to respond to a golfer after a long game in the hot sun. For this reason the space is more vibrant than subdued while still being relaxing - like a lively reminder of the game just played. The design also had to "cooperate" with the other finished interior spaces and design of the building. The design was commissioned.
The bar is completed and presently in use at the Montgomerie Links Golf Club for a few years now.

The bar design is of interest. To complete the construction of the bar quickly, the back lit yellow onyx bar cladding is attached to a brick masonry bar carcass with one bolt that also serves as an ornamental stud on the stone. Every other slab over laps the other and a bead of silicone prevents them from moving while also preventing light leak. By constructing in this manner, tolerances for construction are more forgiving, which hastened construction.
The biggest challenge was completing the design and construction on time. To accomplish the task, the design was considered as parts that could be manufactured off site while other works occurred simultaneously on site. The parts manufactured off site were designed to be installed quickly with areas to take up tolerances built into the design. There was also the challenge of keeping the contractors and suppliers moving at a quick pace. Through the process, we went through three chair mock ups before manufacturing them on time.
