The Design

About Fireplace Table

Fireplace is more than a coffee table. It imitates the role of a fireplace with its lighting and the function of bringing people together. The inside light is supposed to evoke the attributes of fire and the tranquility of a welcoming home. The antiqued and rustic surface generates the feeling of burning and ashes while bringing traits of modernity and functionality to the work. The circular look is built up of modern, angular geometric shapes contrasting the modern and the traditional design. You can put objects anywhere in/ on the table without blocking the way of the light.

Interviews

Design Interview

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

I was inspired by the image of setting fire which I placed indoors and modified its function. The table imitates the role of a fireplace with its lighting and the function of bringing people together. This reflects on the ancient tradition of sitting by the fire.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

Evoking the image of fire was the focus of my design. I wanted to place it inside a home without really setting a fire. The inside light is supposed to recall the attributes of fire and the tranquility of a welcoming home. The antiqued and rustic surface generates the feeling of burning and ashes while bringing traits of modernity and functionality to the work. My aim was to present the element of fire and the warmth of a home in an item that has many functions. Beside being a table with big storage capacity the piece can be used to display the objects it holds. In a home, we can keep our personal items in it, while in a bar or café you can put wine bottles or home decor objects in it. In addition it binds the people sitting around it together. They can gather, eat and drink, talk or play cards. That is why I recommend it for social places.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

I would like to show my works to a wider audience and to become an acknowledged designer.

Grand Interview

Your innovative approach to reimagining the traditional fireplace through the Fireplace Table design has earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award - could you elaborate on how this fusion of ancient gathering traditions with modern functionality emerged during your creative process?

The fireplace table imitates the role of traditional internal combustion fireplaces, stoves, i.e. indoor fireplaces, in a modern design and placed in the function of the table. The interior light evokes the qualities of fire and the tranquility of a friendly home. Fire is one of man's most ancient companions and at the same time a tool. To this day, one of humanity's favorite social pastimes is grilling by an open fire in the garden or camping. The antiqued and rustic surface creates a feeling of burning and ashes, while bringing notes of modernity and functionality to the space. The circular appearance is also based on the shape of the fire pit.

The Fireplace Table's complex geometric structure, built from angular shapes that create a circular form, presents an intriguing visual contrast - what inspired this specific architectural approach, and how did your background in psychology influence these design decisions?

We wanted a fire pit in our garden, but we didn't want to buy one, nor did we want to pour it out of concrete. So I started laying bricks in a circle, skipping one place at a time, in several rows. When it was ready and we used it many times, I watched the light shine through the alternating gaps and then I thought about what it would be like if I somehow put this inside. Anyway, my entire design career began with this project. I think my psychological background influenced me the other way around, I became a psychologist because I often see things differently, from a different perspective. Creativity and problem solving are common in that I chose the profession of psychologist and creative activities. It's like an unusual usage test applied as a creativity task. What else can a thing, object, sight, thought, etc. be used for? Creativity can also be interpreted as orientation in the wide association space.

How did your experience as a psychologist shape the development of the Fireplace Table's warm LED lighting system, which seems designed to evoke the primal, comforting qualities of fire while meeting contemporary living needs?

Since I wanted to bring the concept and atmosphere of the fireplace into the interior, functionality was also very important in addition to the atmosphere. Since it is a utility item, I tried to make it possible to place all kinds of objects, CDs, books, wine bottles, glasses, etc., in almost every opening. The interior lighting had to evoke the qualities of fire and the tranquility of a friendly home. The antiqued and rustic surface creates a feeling of burning and ashes, while bringing notes of modernity and functionality to the project. The table is made up of angular geometric shapes, which create a contrast with the modern and traditional design, symbolizing the confinement to our modern world.

Production Technology
Practicality was important in creating this piece. One can put all kinds of objects, CDs, books, wine bottles, cups in almost all the slots. The table was made of antiqued pine wood. The electric system with the wires, batteries and the switch have all been hidden. Inside the table there is a plug through which the batteries can be charged. The lighting is a warm led lighting which can be turned on by a touch switch and the batteries can operate it for 24 hours.
Design Challenge
The geometry of the table is complex and was difficult to bring to life. It was challenging to find the suitable angles, to plan and carry out the precise joining, to instal and hide the electrical device, the wiring, the battery and the switch. We were also focusing on maximalizing the work’s functionality while respecting the design. The special surface treatment of each piece before the assembling was rather time consuming.
Research
During creating this table I researched geometry and we made a lot of attempts until we managed to build this rather complex structure. I started with paper up, paper folding techniques, but it was not enough. Then my constructor’s form erexperiences and 3D softwares helped us to arrive at the final solution. The biggest challenge was to adjust the angles of the cubes precisely both inside and outside considering the radius, diameter, practicality, measures and proportions.
Inspiration
I was inspired by the image of setting fire which I put indoor and changed its function. It imitates the role of a fireplace with its lighting and the function of bringing people together. This reflects on the ancient tradition of sitting by the fire. The inside light is supposed to evoke the attributes of fire and the tranquility of a welcoming home. The antiqued and rustic surface generates the feeling of burning and ashes while bringing traits of modernity and functionality to the work.
Project Duration
The project started in February 2016 and finished in August 2016 in Budapest
Operation Flow
I would recommend this table for bars, coffee shops, restaurants, entertainment places and homes. Wherever peolple can sit around, read, eat, talk and enjoy themselves. We can actually place the wine bottles we will choose from for a meal in the table. Apart from bottles you can keep several objects in or on it. This is one of its distinctive features. Other special features are: the moodlighting, the technical solutions, the creating process of the design, the rustic, antique surface, and the execution.
Patents
I have no patents and copyrights.
