About Read Life Cultural Space

Read Life is a shared cultural space designed for public reading. The project covers 815 square meters on two floors. The first floor holds the main reading area, a bread shop, a small supermarket and a cafe. Floor-to-ceiling display cabinets near the entrance carry plants, which add indoor greenery and help purify the air. Tall book walls define the character of the reading area. The second floor surrounds the open central space and contains an art gallery and a children's play area. The design connects books and people and supports the exchange of knowledge.

Tina Sheng's Read Life Cultural Space represents a distinguished contribution to contemporary retail and exhibition design, embodying a philosophical approach that positions commerce within frameworks of cultural enrichment and contemplative experience, the work demonstrates exceptional command of spatial proportion and material selection, deploying a restrained palette of natural oak and polished concrete to create an environment where visual quiet amplifies rather than diminishes engagement with displayed objects, the designer appears to reference both Scandinavian modernist traditions of warm minimalism and East Asian sensibilities regarding emptiness as positive spatial quality, achieving synthesis that feels neither derivative nor self-consciously hybrid, the modular shelving system functions simultaneously as display infrastructure, spatial divider, and architectural gesture, its repetitive grid establishing meditative rhythm while individual compartments become intimate stages for merchandise presentation, the double-height volume creates generous vertical proportion that elevates the visitor experience beyond transactional retail toward something approaching gallery or library atmosphere, careful attention to lighting design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how illumination shapes perception and mood, combining practical task lighting with atmospheric ambient quality, the incorporation of living plants introduces biophilic warmth and temporal dimension as organic elements grow and change within the geometric framework, seating areas suggest invitation to linger and contemplate rather than merely consume, transforming the commercial program into social and cultural amenity, the visible mezzanine level with traditional furnishings creates intriguing dialogue between contemporary architectural expression and heritage material culture, this thoughtful integration of multiple programmatic intentions within unified formal language distinguishes the project as exemplary achievement in its category, visitors might consider how spatial generosity and material authenticity influence their relationship to objects and to the act of acquisition itself

Design Challenge
The 2nd floor surrounding the tall indoor space has the art gallery and children’s play area, where the capacious environment is comfy for playing and reading activities. Staying in the tall and open space, people have the different experiences of reading and life. This is the space not only connects books and people, also enhance the communications of knowledge and life among people.
Project Duration
The project finished in October 2018, locates in Henan, China.
Operation Flow
The towering cabinets disclose the magnificent momentum. The design of book walls fascinatingly resembles the movie scene in “Roman Holiday,” in which the actress Audrey Hepburn first met the actor. The space characters are distinct from the general impression to a reading area. The café, behind the reading area, is embellished with the sufficient daylight and the elegant colors and adornments consistently conformed to the main design skills. The stair lighting, from the 1st to 2nd floor, is gorgeous.
Inspiration
Life concerns more on the pursuit of spirit. We should be grateful and contribute to the society with the limited resources and conditions. This is the intent of design, making reading communal and making life universal.
