About Mansions Design Inn Hotel
Mansions Design Inn is a hotel interior located on a commercial street in Chongqing, China. The project covers 800 square meters and uses the high ceiling of the original loft space to divide each room into two levels. The lower level serves as the public area, with a living room, a bathroom and storage. The upper level is the sleeping area, with a device for hanging clothes and hats and a second bathroom where space allows. Staircases act as the visual center of each room. Steel, dark red art paint, carpets and varied lighting express a modern factory theme.
Chao Wen's Mansions Design Inn Hotel exemplifies a distinctive approach to contemporary hospitality interiors wherein bold chromatic choices establish immediate spatial identity while sophisticated architectural detailing creates layered visual interest. The reception environment demonstrates how carefully calibrated color relationships, here the dynamic dialogue between dusty rose and atmospheric blue-gray, can define brand personality while maintaining visual comfort and spatial legibility. The designer appears to engage with traditions of boutique hotel aesthetics that emerged in the late twentieth century, wherein departure from conventional neutral palettes signaled individuality and curated experience, yet the execution suggests awareness of contemporary tendencies toward material honesty and industrial reference. The helical staircase functions as both circulatory infrastructure and sculptural centerpiece, its vertical elements creating a screen-like transparency that permits borrowed light from the generous window wall while establishing rhythmic visual pattern through repetition. Particularly noteworthy is the integration of whimsical sculptural elements, the glossy bulldog figures positioned as unexpected threshold guardians, introducing levity and personality that counterbalances the architectural rigor of the surrounding environment. The material palette juxtaposes raw concrete ceiling treatment against precision-fabricated metal elements and smooth lacquered surfaces, creating tactile variety within a cohesive chromatic framework. Natural light suffuses the space through the extensive glazing, modulated by the staircase balustrade into filtered patterns that animate the interior throughout the day. The composition invites consideration of how hospitality environments might balance functional requirements with experiential richness, and how unexpected elements of play and personality might enhance rather than diminish spatial sophistication. - Unique Properties
- As the actual intention of the hotel, designers still need to bear in mind the importance of comfort and experience in this project. So they divide the whole space into two parts by taking advantage of the high layer-height relationship, which not only effectively improves the utilization rate of the space, but also considers the dynamic and static relationship from the functional partition.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The project covers a total of 800 square meters. Since the whole space is divided into upper and lower floors, then the staircase must exist. Moreover, due to the narrow and long space itself, there are not too many areas to set the core visual center. Therefore, we use the staircase as a central expression carrier for each room.

- Rich lighting forms and carpet settings weaken the cold feeling brought by steel, and the dark red art paint can not only increase the sense of spatial hierarchy and wrapping, but also produce a little warm feelings.
- Design Challenge
- Like most of loft apartments, the original architecture has a more abundant high-rise structure, but the overall space is still narrow. In addition, the hotel only occupies three-fifths of the whole floor area, so in dealing with spatial relations, we must solve the independence of the hotel in the visual and spatial moving line, in order to help the hotel present a more complete visual and experience effect.
- Project Duration
- The project started in April 2018 in Chongqing and finished in February 2019 in Chongqing.
- Operation Flow
- In order to meet the needs of customers for more convenient living functions and bring more comfortable living experience, designers have designed a device for hanging clothes and hats in the sleeping area of each room, and two bathroom spaces upstairs and downstairs are also set up in rooms with sufficient space.
- Research
- Mansions Design Inn is located in Guanyinqiao Commercial Street, where is the most popular place for young people in Chongqing. Designers began to think about what kind of city hotel can really integrate into such a macro environment. They use some symbols inherent in the factory to constantly strengthen the visual theme, so that the sense of experience can be felt at the first moment when the customers enter the room.
- Inspiration
- Chongqing is not a city lacking imagination and stories, and its unique temperament has already affected all aspects of the city. Tall buildings and seemingly plump colors followed, which is the current modern, and prosperous appearance of most cities today. Therefore, the theme of modern factory emerged as the times require, and designers also want to create a little dialogue with the current city through some expressions.
