About Relio Transformable Lamp
Relio is a modular professional lamp designed for arts and sciences. The lamp is portable and transformable, and can be arranged as a desk lamp, a wall lamp, a ceiling lamp or a photographic light. The modular shell is made of aluminium and stainless steel, while the magnetic stand uses neodymium magnets. Several parts are 3D printed and released as open-source files, so accessories can be added and replaced. The light is engineered to be close to natural sunlight, so professionals can work under ideal conditions. Power is supplied through a standard USB port.
This refined presentation of Marco Bozzola's Relio Transformable Lamp situates itself within the distinguished lineage of modular design systems that emerged from mid-twentieth-century rationalist principles yet speaks with unmistakably contemporary sophistication. The work demonstrates exceptional attention to the holistic design experience, extending considerations beyond the luminaire itself to encompass its storage, transport, and ritual of assembly, an approach suggesting awareness of design traditions wherein packaging and presentation achieve equal status with the functional object. The ebonized wooden case evokes precious instrument storage, perhaps violin cases or scientific equipment housings, elevating the lamp from utilitarian object to treasured tool deserving ceremonial care. Technical accomplishment manifests in the precision engineering evident throughout: the foam inserts demonstrate exactitude in accommodating each component, the interchangeable optical elements suggest systematic thinking about varied lighting conditions and user needs, while the assembled lamp displays elegant proportional relationships between base, stem, and articulated head. The singular translucent white element among black components may reference the idea of enlightenment emerging from darkness, or perhaps more practically demonstrates the system's range from focused to diffused illumination. The composition's documentary presentation style honors the design's integrity without artificial drama, allowing formal qualities to communicate directly. One might consider how the designers have addressed the contemporary condition of portable, adaptable workspaces, creating an instrument that rewards investment through longevity and considered craftsmanship, inviting contemplation of the relationship between tools and their keepers in an age of disposability.

- Production Technology
- The modular shell is entirely made of aluminum and premium-grade stainless steel, machined in the hills of Northern Italy.
A protective layer of aerospatial aluminum oxide protects these metal surfaces from scuff marks and deep scratches.
The outer carrying box is made of recycled wood, machined and assembled here in Italy.
The magnetic stand is made of powerful neodymium rare-earth magnets made in Japan. - Design Challenge
- You can make beautiful, robust and well-thought products, but if the end price is too high, very few people will be able to experience them. So, the biggest challenge and successful achievement for this project was to keep prices low despite the use of premium materials and while keeping 100% of manufacturing here in Italy.
- Project Duration
- The project started in 2017 in Brescia, Italy. Final prototypes were ready in 2019. In early 2020, Relio 2020 was presented to the market and quickly sold-out its initial production batch.
- Operation Flow
- Relio is a professional lamp that mimics sunlight. A series of modular parts combine together to form a tiny, powerful light source that can either become a desktop lamp, a wall lamp, a ceiling lamp or a professional photographic instrument. Magnets, metals and 3D-printable add-on accessories are the core of its modularity.
- Research
- Historically, professional and scientific instruments are engineered without too much attention to their design. In this project, I wanted to embrace the design rules that usually apply to consumer products (modularity, simplicity and minimalism) to create a professional device that is both easy to use and easy to repair. This approach resulted in a robust and maintainable product. A core requirement for professional tools!
- Inspiration
- My passions - modularity and openness - are the inspiration for Relio.
Modularity, because I wanted to create a professional instrument able to transform into various shapes to cover as many functions as possible.
Openness, because many parts of Relio are released as 3D-printable Open-Source files, so anyone can expand Relio's functionality and customize it for every need.
These features make Relio able to withstand years and years of intense usage, while keeping high repairability and upgradeability scores. The best of both worlds! - Image Credits
