About Moono Primary Function: Hangende Skuiflig

Unique Properties
Moono’s defining feature is its mechanical sliding construction that modifies both light distribution and intensity through a two-element wooden form. The moving lower component acts as a physical filter around the LED source, enabling gradual transitions between diffused and concentrated light while maintaining a minimal silhouette. Solid oak and walnut provide structural clarity and tactile authenticity, while the lighting components remain visually quiet and integrated. This combination of manual control, precise craftsmanship, and sculptural simplicity makes Moono both a functional fixture and a spatial object.
Dimensions & Packaging
Moono is available in two sizes: length 1110 mm and 880 mm. The pendant features an integrated Led strip with power consumption of 18 W for the 1110 mm version and 15 W for the 880 mm version. Power supply is 220 V. Light color options include 3000 K, 4000 K, and 6500 K, with cri above 90. Ceiling suspended installation with adjustable cables. ip20 rating. The product is packaged in a custom protective textile sleeve designed for safe transport and storage.

Production Technology
Moono is handcrafted using solid oak and walnut wood, combined with optional brass or copper metal coverings. The body consists of two precisely milled wooden elements connected through a custom sliding mechanism that enables smooth vertical movement. An integrated Led strip is concealed within the structure, while the power supply is hidden inside the upper element, ensuring a clean architectural appearance.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was developing a sliding system that allows smooth physical control of light while integrating electrical components safely within a minimal wooden structure. Balancing handcrafted solid wood elements with precise tolerances required multiple prototypes. Additional challenges included ensuring durability, user safety, and consistent light behavior while preserving the calm, sculptural quality inspired by lunar lighting.
Research
Type of Research: Design based research. Research Objectives: To explore physical control of light intensity and direction through modular movement. Methodology: Iterative prototyping and material testing. Data Collection and Tools: Physical models, light behavior observation, and led testing. Participants or Experiments: Designer led experimentation. Results: A sliding lighting system enabling intuitive intensity control. Insights and Impacts: Demonstrates how mechanical interaction can replace digital control, influencing user experience, spatial atmosphere, and contemporary lighting design.
Inspiration
Moono was inspired by the way the moon filters and redirects light through its phases, subtly altering intensity and direction. The project explores the idea of creating a physical filter for a light source, where mechanical movement reshapes illumination. As the light element slides, it concentrates and follows movement, echoing the calm, responsive behavior of lunar light within architectural space.
Project Duration
The project started in 2022 in Tbilisi, Georgia, and was completed in 2023. The design was developed and finalized as part of SHRE Studio lighting collection.
Operation Flow
Moono operates through a modular sliding system that allows the user to control light intensity physically. By moving the lower element closer to or farther from the light source, the light becomes more focused or more diffused. This movement acts as a light filter, reshaping both brightness and direction. The interaction is simple and intuitive, giving users direct control over atmosphere without switches or digital interfaces.
