About Sukun Primary Function: Rechargeable nga Lampara sa Lamesa

Unique Properties
Sukun is a rechargeable table lamp made from Turkish travertine. Six Islamic geometric patterns referenced from landmark sites in Turkiye and Spain filter a 2700K warm up and down light to create a calm, glare reduced ambience. Waterjet and cnc machining preserve crisp geometry with natural stone texture.

Production Technology
Body in Turkish travertine. The patterned top is cut by waterjet and refined with cnc machining; edges are hand finished. An integrated led module provides 2700k warm light in up and down directions. A concealed rechargeable power system enables cordless use and supports indoor and outdoor scenarios.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was machining fine perforations in travertine without chipping while maintaining sufficient thickness and structural stability. Light quality required iterations to reduce hotspots and glare by balancing pattern density with up and down emission, and integrating the rechargeable system inside a minimal stone volume.
Research
Type of research: material and pattern study.
Research objectives: apply Islamic geometric patterns to travertine and filter 2700K light for calm use.
Methodology: analyze six sites, reconstruct motifs with Eric Broug resources, prototype.
Data collection and research tools used: photos, cad, waterjet, cnc, light tests.
Participants or experiments: six pattern variants.
Results, insights and impacts: pattern density shapes comfort and the stone character remains.
Effect of the research in real life: portable stone lighting for reading and dining.
Inspiration
Sukun was inspired by Islamic geometric motifs encountered while growing up in Turkiye and a desire to see this pattern language beyond wood, especially on travertine and stone for everyday use. Guided by Eric Broug studies, six motifs were reinterpreted from sites in konya, kayseri, karaman, cordoba, valladolid, and granada.
Project Duration
The project started in November 2025 in Istanbul, Turkiye and was completed in February 2026 in Istanbul, Turkiye.
Operation Flow
The lamp is placed on a table and operated via a simple control. When switched on, 2700K warm light passes through the carved pattern to create a soft ambient glow upward, while the downward component provides functional illumination on the surface. The light is designed to be comfortable for reading, resting, and dining.
