Actually, it took me a long time after my architecture studies to understand that design is really my passion. Designing has become both a profession and a hobby for me. Now it is my life...

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

Actually, it took me a long time after my architecture studies to understand that design is really my passion. Designing has become both a profession and a hobby for me. Now it is my life...

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

For many years I designed large public and commercial buildings for one of the largest architectural practices in Germany, among them stadiums for the German Bundesliga, university buildings or hospitals. Parallel to this I founded KUCZIA architects and has been successfully concentrating on smaller but ambitious projects. My work has been awarded multiple international prizes, including International Design Award (US), Iconic Award (DE), DNA Paris Design Awards (FR), LICC London Creative Competition (UK), German Design Award (DE), Green GOOD DESIGN Award (US), a national nomination to the MIES VAN DER ROHE AWARD for European Architecture, and many others. My projects have been published in over 50 books and hundreds of magazines on five continents and exhibited in many countries.

What is "design" for you?

For me, design is the fusion of knowledge and intuition.

What kinds of works do you like designing most?

I have already planned many large-format buildings. But I prefer to design small houses. Every house is unique. Behind every such project stand people with their stories, problems and dreams. Every house has a unique environment, neighborhood. Each time it is a long process until the optimal design is found. But then, when the inhabitants are happy with their house, that is the greatest satisfaction for me.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

My most favorite design is WORMHOUSE - The Breathing House. Is is a small, low budget ecological house in South of Poland. The great luck with this project was to have a client who is open to very crazy ideas, but at the same time demands a strictly rational justification for every creative idea from me. He maintains a website of the project - it's worth looking there: www.wormhouse.pl

What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

With enthusiasm and conviction I use photovoltaic modules as BIPV (Building Integrated PV), if only it is possible. It is not about elements placed on the facade or roof, but about a complete integration of the energy generating modules into the building skin. In this way the roofs and facades become aesthetic energy sources.

When do you feel the most creative?

I can't say exactly when such moments occur, but it's true that on some days the ideas in my head literally explode, and on others I get mentally stuck.

What makes a design successful?

Even the best design ideas are of little value if they are not consistently implemented and realized. I think the consistency in the implementation of the basic ideas to the end is what makes the design successful.

Solar Skywalks Energisk Aktivering Af Gangbroer · 10 spørgsmål

The initial spark for Solar Skywalks, the concept of transforming urban footbridges into sustainable power generators, emerged from my lifelong fascination with both passive and active solar solutions.

Your innovative approach to transforming urban footbridges into sustainable power generators through Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges has garnered significant attention - could you elaborate on the initial spark that inspired this intersection of functionality and environmental consciousness?

The initial spark for Solar Skywalks, the concept of transforming urban footbridges into sustainable power generators, emerged from my lifelong fascination with both passive and active solar solutions. I had been exploring ways to implement solar energy in urban settings when the Mayor of Beijing expressed interest in modernizing the city's existing skywalks. This presented an exciting opportunity to marry form and function: to use these structures not only to facilitate pedestrian movement but also to harness the power of the sun.

The Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges project demonstrates remarkable potential for urban energy generation - how did you determine the optimal balance between aesthetic appeal and power generation efficiency when designing the thin-film CIGS photovoltaic module integration?

The vision was twofold. Firstly, Solar Skywalks aimed to integrate photovoltaic solutions into pre-existing structures, highlighting that green innovation can be retrofitted into our current urban landscapes. Secondly, the project aimed to demonstrate that sustainability and aesthetics can go hand in hand. By thoughtfully incorporating solar panels into the design of the bridges, we were able to create visually appealing structures that also serve as active contributors to a more sustainable city.

Your calculations showing that a medium-sized Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges installation could generate 18,000 KWh annually are impressive - could you walk us through the research and testing process that validated these energy production estimates?

Absolutely. When we first conceived the Solar Skywalks concept, we knew that accurate energy production estimates would be crucial. To validate our calculations, we engaged in a comprehensive research and testing process, leveraging cutting-edge simulation software designed specifically for photovoltaic (PV) applications. We partnered with a German-Chinese PV company that brought extensive expertise and resources to the table. Their contribution was invaluable, as they provided us with the most appropriate solutions and PV modules for our project.Using the provided PV modules and the simulation software, we were able to create a digital model of a medium-sized Solar Skywalks installation. We then ran a series of simulations, factoring in variables such as average sunlight exposure, climate patterns, and potential shading or obstructions in an urban environment. The software allowed us to predict the energy output of the solar panels under various conditions and across different times of the year. The result of these simulations was the estimate that a medium-sized Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges installation could generate approximately 18,000 KWh of electricity annually. We are confident in these projections, as they are grounded in rigorous research, advanced simulation technology, and the expertise of our PV partners.Of course, actual energy production can vary depending on real-world conditions and factors such as maintenance, but our thorough testing process gives us a solid foundation for what we can expect from Solar Skywalks

The educational aspect of Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges, particularly its role in raising public awareness about sustainability, stands out as a unique feature - how did you conceptualize and implement these informational display elements to effectively engage passersby?

The educational aspect of Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges is indeed a unique and vital feature of the project. My previous work on a concept called "Educating Buildings" laid the groundwork for this component. This concept, which I explored in depth in a book I authored in Germany, revolves around integrating communication strategies within sustainable architectural projects to raise public awareness and understanding. When conceptualizing Solar Skywalks, I knew we had a fantastic opportunity to apply the principles of "Educating Buildings." We aimed to create an engaging and informative experience for pedestrians using the footbridges. To implement this, we proposed several solutions. One was the integration of displays and interactive stands at key points along the bridges. These displays provide real-time data on the energy generation of the solar panels, offering tangible evidence of the benefits of renewable energy. We also incorporated visually appealing, bridge-specific information on sustainability and environmental conservation to engage passersby and inspire them to consider their role in building a greener future. The idea was to make these educational elements an integral part of the overall design, ensuring they blend seamlessly with the aesthetic appeal of the solar footbridges. By thoughtfully combining form and function, our aim was to create a captivating and educational experience for all those who use Solar Skywalks.

Having developed Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges since 2018 with mockups in Shanghai and Munich, what were the most surprising discoveries or challenges you encountered when adapting the system for different climate zones?

Since the inception of Solar Skywalks in 2018, we've been able to refine and adapt the concept through mockups in Shanghai and Munich. This process has not only helped us iron out potential issues, but also led to some unexpected discoveries. One of the most surprising aspects was the adaptability of the system to different climate zones. While we initially developed Solar Skywalks with a focus on urban footbridges, the underlying concept of integrating photovoltaic structures into existing infrastructure can be extended to other applications as well. We found that our approach was not only applicable to footbridges, but also to ground-based structures like the "Sunopy" and bicycle paths like "Solaroute".This concept led us to understand the potential of Solar Skywalks as a starting point for a broader range of sustainable infrastructure solutions. By adapting the system to specific climate conditions, we can maximize the energy output and environmental benefits in different locations.Of course, this also presented challenges. Different climates require different considerations, from the angle and orientation of solar panels to the materials used in the structures

The versatility of Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges in creating over 80 specific designs from a single rectangular panel shape is fascinating - could you share your design philosophy behind achieving such diversity while maintaining system consistency?

Absolutely! The versatility of Solar Skywalks is indeed one of its most fascinating aspects. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that a single, simple rectangular panel shape could be arranged in dozens unique designs while still maintaining system consistency. Our design philosophy behind this accomplishment was rooted in exploration and boundary-pushing. Rather than seeing the single panel shape as a limitation, we viewed it as an exciting challenge to discover just how much diversity and creativity we could achieve within those constraints. It was thrilling to explore the different possibilities, and each new design revealed the incredible potential of working within a set framework. This process also highlighted the elegance and beauty that can be found in simplicity. In the end, our work on Solar Skywalks has shown us that constraints can be liberating, and that pushing the boundaries of what's possible within those constraints can lead to truly innovative and inspiring results

Looking at the direct impact of Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges, particularly the potential to power 1,800,000 km of electric scooter travel from a single installation, how do you envision this technology reshaping urban mobility infrastructure?

When we first developed Solar Skywalks in 2018, electric mobility was just starting to gain traction. Today, it's a topic of widespread discussion and interest. While the energy produced by a single Solar Skywalk installation may not be enough to significantly impact a city's overall energy needs, it can certainly contribute to powering smaller electric vehicles, particularly e-scooters which are increasingly popular in Asia. The potential for a single Solar Skywalk to power 1,800,000 km of electric scooter travel is significant. But more than that, it serves as a tangible demonstration of the possibilities for integrating renewable energy sources into our urban infrastructure. Our vision is that Solar Skywalks, and similar technologies, can contribute to reshaping urban mobility by providing not just clean energy, but also by inspiring cities to think more creatively about how we power our transportation systems. While the direct impact of Solar Skywalks on the energy needs of a city might be modest, its potential to spark conversations, raise awareness, and drive innovation in sustainable urban mobility is invaluable.

The integration of E-car and E-bike charging stations beneath Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges creates a complete energy ecosystem - what considerations guided your approach to this comprehensive urban energy solution?

Our approach to creating a comprehensive urban energy solution with Solar Skywalks was deeply rooted in the idea that everything is interconnected. We didn't want Solar Skywalks to be just a standalone source of renewable energy; we wanted it to be a part of a larger, holistic system. This guided our decision to integrate E-car and E-bike charging stations beneath the Solar Skywalks. We saw this as a way to not only provide clean energy but also facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles and bicycles, thereby contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions from transportation.By combining energy generation with charging infrastructure, we aimed to create a closed-loop system where the energy produced by Solar Skywalks directly supports clean transportation. This interconnectedness is at the heart of our vision for a sustainable future, where all elements of our urban environments - from energy generation to transportation - work together in harmon

As cities worldwide grapple with sustainability challenges, how might the principles demonstrated in Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges be adapted or expanded to address other urban infrastructure needs?

Our approach with Solar Skywalks was not just about generating renewable energy; we also aimed to create an aesthetically pleasing design that enhances the urban landscape. We believe that sustainability and beauty don't have to be mutually exclusive. The principles demonstrated in Solar Skywalks - combining renewable energy generation with existing infrastructure in a way that adds to the visual appeal of a city - could be adapted to address other urban infrastructure needs. For instance, we could see similar concepts applied to bus shelters, public seating areas, or even building facades. The key is to integrate renewable energy sources into our cities in a way that not only serves a practical purpose but also makes our cities more beautiful and enjoyable places to live.

Given the success of Solar Skywalks Energetic Activation of Footbridges in Beijing, what modifications or enhancements are you considering for future iterations of this innovative design concept?

We're thrilled with the success of Solar Skywalks in Beijing, but we're not resting on our laurels. We believe that design should constantly evolve to incorporate the latest technological advancements and respond to current needs. Our goal is to stay at the forefront of sustainable urban design, continually pushing ourselves to create solutions that are not just functional and beautiful, but also relevant and timely.
