About Flying to the Moon Mondkuchen-Geschenkbox

Unique Properties
This Mid-Autumn moon cake packaging aims to take users back to the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival customs. Therefore, the packaging adopts the traditional Chinese palace lantern and a light module is added on its bottom. The circular illustration, coming from traditional mythologies, like the Jade Hare, the palace of the moon and Apsaras in Dunhuang Murals, exudes a strong sense of ceremony.
Dimensions & Packaging
145mm X 145mm X 300mm
Production Technology
The design of the illustration is based on the lines written by Li Bai. If I hadn't seen them on the mountain, I would have met them under the moon on the Terrace of Jade. It adopts an innovative multi-layer three-dimensional structure, and use the die-cutting process to increase the visual layering.
Design Challenge
The difficulty of packaging design lies in how to creatively explore the cultural elements related to the Mid-autumn Festival. Therefore, we chose the element of Apsaras in Dunhuang Murals, and place four nymphs of different postures into the background based on the Moon Palace to form the relaxing and rejoicing atmosphere.
Research
The Mid-autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, which was popularized in the Tang Dynasty and became a national festival later then. According to the mythology, during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, Xuanzong admired flowers with his concubine Yang Yuhuan and had invited poet Li Bai. When Li Bai was drunk, he composed a poem. That is the origin of the famous Tang poem.
Inspiration
It is inspired by the traditional palace lantern, on which elaborate graphics are used for decoration. To express the rich connotation of the traditional Mid-autumn Festival, the Jade Rare, the Moon Palace and other elements are selected and the styles of Dunhuang Murals are also integrated to show the elegance and sense of ceremony of Chinese classical culture.
Project Duration
This product was started in Shenzhen, China in September 2020 and was finished in Shenzhen, China in October 2020.
Operation Flow
After removing the moon cakes inside, users can turn on the switch of LED located in the bottom and install the transparent PVC case and the outer hollowed-out case, making it a decorative lantern. The 3D paper carved Jade Rare and Nymphs in the semi-transparent PVC material look suspended in the air, immersing users in the traditional festival customs.
