Alisiu is a study, a dissertation on mobility, conceived as a response to the environmental and cultural shifts of our epoch. Built on the principle of natural balance, the design dissolves the traditional barriers between habitat, vessel, and ocean to redefine our modern understanding of "home." Inspired by the tranquility of the trade winds, the alísio winds, It merges Portugal's profound nautical heritage with bespoke contemporary technology. A self-sustainable, ecofriendly home, able to provide an uncompromised equilibrium with nature.
What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
The main focus was to design a home, a completely self-sustained habitat capable of functioning seamlessly as a mobile unit within a larger, interconnected community. Driven by concepts like Social Engineering, Integrational Design, the primary objective was to rethink human habitat. I wanted to achieve a state of true ecological autonomy, where the living space utilizes advanced, automated technology to generate its own power, fresh water, life support… By treating the vessel as a sovereign, self-sufficient unit, Alisiu allows its users to experience complete self-sustainable living, without sacrificing the deeply rooted human need for comfort, connection, and a sense of place.
What are your future plans for this award winning design?
Alisiu is to transit from a conceptual design study into an active, physical standard for sustainable naval architecture. Winning this prestigious award validates the vessel core philosophy, providing the global visibility required to catalyze the next phase of development. The immediate plan is to forge a collaborative, forward-thinking partnership between all the necessary stakeholders, including a naval architecture studio, an advanced composite shipyard, visionary investors… bringing this vision closer to reality. Translating this conceptual framework into a physical build, authenticates self-sufficient mobility, not just as a speculation, but a fully achievable, tangible solution for the present era modern living.
How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
Alisiu development spanned a nine-month period, beginning in July 2022 and reaching completion in March 2023. This timeline allowed for a design process that balanced engineering research with extensive 3D CAD modeling. Nine months of focused dedication to the concept ensured a thorough, refined integration of all the complex constituents, later woven into a single cohesive structure.
Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
Alisiu was not a commissioned project; it was born from a deeply personal desire to pursue a unique inspiration rooted in Portuguese naval heritage. Portugal has a historic connection to the oceans, yet the contemporary landscape lacks domestic shipyards dedicated to pioneering progressive naval design. This concept was created to bridge that gap. I wanted to capture the intrinsic, timeless beauty of a traditional sailing vessel, the Portuguese Veleiro, one that merges nautical heritage with contemporary aesthetics. An entirely new technological based approach was developed, one that proves Portugal's historical legacy to still, actively inspire world-class, naval innovation today.
Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
Alisiu is currently an independent, award-winning concept study, meaning it is not yet tied to any external manufacturer or shipyard. My primary intention is to establish collaborative partnerships with forward-thinking shipbuilders or specialized production rights buyers who possess the infrastructure required to produce advanced carbon-fiber vessels. I am eager to license these rights or co-produce the vessel alongside a partner capable of turning this concept into a physical reality.
What made you design this particular type of work?
The decision to design a Veleiro took roots in the unique, poetic relationship it shares with the Sea. Unlike a motor yacht that imposes itself on nature, a sailing yacht naturally collaborates with the elements. It provided the perfect canvas to explore the intrinsic beauty in what is to integrate a design piece into the oceans. By balancing the carefully chosen materials, carbon based engineered solutions and fully autonomous systems, a sail yacht became the perfect example to demonstrate how the future can be made sustainable.
Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
Alisiu was influenced by a collective, an adaptive social ecosystem of both human intelligence and machine learning. The design process heavily leveraged real-time cognitive and social feedback loops. By gathering direct insights from an international community of design enthusiasts, the project remained responsive to real-world expectations. Additionally, advanced AI analysis was used to analyze emerging sustainable technologies and market directions, allowing this collaborative network to collectively shape Alisiu's final narrative.
Who is the target customer for his design?
Alisiu is envisioned for a new breed of high-tech driven, forward thinking individuals, Entrepreneurs, Millennials, for the ones who want to shift away from the static, traditional ostentation and into a new form of self. Aliziu is designed for those who understand the value in integrative, cutting-edge organic technology, sovereign mobility, and ecological symmetry. These are the individuals who do not simply want to possess an asset; they are seeking a new habitat for a new ecosystem, one that reflects their own values, like privacy, innovation and independence. Order in Balance.
What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
Alisiu embodies a truly new yacht topology, from the ecofriendly biopolymers, to the carbon composite modular frame, revolutionary 360-degree pod-mounted hydrojet, clean deck, and of course, the laminated SmartGlass windows, the very feature that most definitively sets Alisiu apart. Utilizing a structural carbon fiber trellis to bridge the massive mechanical loads of the mast and keel, it was made possible to engineer windows that run uninterrupted from stern to bow. This architectural breakthrough effectively allowed for the modern, open-space interior panoramic views, anchoring the living spaces directly in the ocean's waterline.
How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
The name Aliziu derives from Portuguese naval heritage, referencing the Portuguese expression “Ventos Alísios”, known as the trade winds, deeply woven into Portugal's naval history. For centuries, these steady, predictable winds served as the lifeblood for ocean exploration, guiding maritime pioneers' consistently across uncharted waters. By choosing this name, the design pays homage to the Portuguese historical knowledge of the winds. It symbolizes a vessel that does not battle the elements, but rather harnesses them with elegance.
Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
The development of Alisiu relied on an advanced, real-time ecosystem of digital tools to bridge the gap between complex engineering and evocative aesthetics. Advanced 3D CAD software was utilized to construct the highly intricate structural composite trellis frame. This geometry was integrated into photorealistic 3D rendering environments, which allowed for real-time visual feedback on materials, reflections, lighting conditions and overall integration. Additionally, specialized AI analytical tools were used during the research phase to parse and curate emerging sustainable data, materials, and technological advancements, creating an optimized and streamlined workflow.
What is the most unique aspect of your design?
The most unique aspect of Alisiu is the absolute subversion of traditional hull architecture, heavily inspired by Le Corbusier's architectural functionalism and his concept of the fenêtre en longueur (horizontal window). Traditionally, a yacht's hull acts as a dense, unyielding load-bearing wall to combat hydrodynamic forces, which isolates the interior from the sea. By shifting this structural burden to an internal carbon fiber composite trellis frame and using the laminated glass in the windows as structural material, it was made possible for the hull to be opened. This engineering feature enabled continuous windows to run seamlessly from stern to bow, fundamentally altering the interior typology and integrating the ocean into the living space, allowing for the user to feel as part of the ocean.
Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
Alisiu was developed by an independent, unipersonal design study, however its realization was the subproduct of continuous social and cognitive feedback. The project relied on the enthusiasts' multidisciplinary, which helped to validate the concepts into real-world solutions. Additionally, advanced artificial intelligence was integrated into the workflow as a specialized research collaborator. This hybrid approach allowed for the rapid parsing and synthesis of complex material research, and emerging green energy technologies, ensuring Aliziu's avant-garde aesthetics are firmly anchored in technical viability.
What is the role of technology in this particular design?
In Alisiu, technology is not intended as luxury, but as the primary catalyst for integration with the natural world. Technology acts as a transparent facilitator for eco-friendly self-sustainability, the automated hybrid photovoltaic sails harvest energy to power hyper-batteries, that in turn power the desalination systems, and run the 360-degree rotary hydrojet pod, all of which silently, seamlessly integrated in to Aliziu´s autonomous systems. True technological integrative interaction, high-effort seamanship is made effortless, allowing for a consonant relation between the user, vessel, and the sea.
Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
Yes, Alisiu was heavily driven by analytical data research, utilizing an adaptive, tech-forward research methodology. AI was to parse vast amounts of industry-related information, specifically analyzing the market directions for sustainable technologies, advancements in eco-friendly biopolymers, and green energy management. Alongside this data-driven approach, a continuous qualitative study was conducted for the analytical validation of the encountered solutions before the design was finalized.
What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
There were two main challenges, on one hand, conceptualizing the Portuguese nautical heritage proved most demanding, it required developing a new visual language capable of binding together the traditional Yacht and its contemporary, seamlessly integrating all aspects that compose Alisiu narrative into one unified language. On the other, a highly technical structural challenge, how to ensure structural integrity between all main elements, in other words, how to maintain extreme rigidity between the high-load areas, the mast, the hull, and the retractable hydrofoil, while completely splitting the hull's structural mass with continuous, horizontal ribbon windows. Solving this, required an integrative engineering solution capable of dispersing these intense dynamic loads true both the carbon fiber trellis frame and structural laminated glass. This advanced structural framework, ultimately allowed for the integration of uninterrupted, stern-to-bow windows, the very signature feature in Alisiu.
How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
The decision to enter the competition actually came from a direct invitation from the A' Design Award team. They reached out after recognizing the unique design philosophy behind Alisiu. Receiving that level of validation from an international body made it clear that this concept had the potential to resonate on a global stage, motivating me to finalize the submission.
What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
Alisiu was never originally meant to enter a design competition; it began as a purely personal exploration of form, heritage, and 3D modeling. Because there were no external formal constraints, the design process was initially oriented towards a freer, less rigorous approach. However, that changed entirely as the presentation started to take form. Realizing the world-class standard required for presenting a Design on a platform like the A' Design Awards, elevated both the project and myself to an unprecedented level. It pushed me to transition from concept exploration to a rigorous, much higher level of research and development, forcing me to validate the underlying logic, structure, materials, and systems integration required to bring Aliziu to the required standards. Ultimately, this project taught me how to take uncompromised creativity and refine it into a premium design expression.
Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
Alisiu is a study, a dissertation on a new lifestyle, with the advent of global warming and the growing necessity for new alternatives, comes a new understanding on how we interact with the natural world. In the present era, our relation with our own environment is undergoing considerable change, now more than ever words like, sustainability, privacy, mobility, assume a much more center role in our every day lives, the growing necessary for peace of mind, for stability, is the very reason why Alisiu came to be.
Alisiu is a reflection of its one époque.
