Grand Interview

Zagros Kerzen · 10 questions

Our concern in the design of this product was the use of recycled materials, after designing the lid of the product, which was taken from the Zagros mountains in Iran, we decided to use a cylindrical form for the fuel…

Your innovative approach to repurposing discarded gas capsules in Zagros Candles addresses a critical environmental concern - could you elaborate on how this sustainability concept evolved from initial idea to final design?

Our concern in the design of this product was the use of recycled materials, after designing the lid of the product, which was taken from the Zagros mountains in Iran, we decided to use a cylindrical form for the fuel tank, and we saw this form in gas capsules. These gas capsules are used in large numbers in the market and their empty format is thrown away

The striking silhouette of Zagros Candles draws inspiration from Iran's majestic Zagros Mountains - how did you translate these natural topographical elements into a functional design that maintains its sculptural beauty even when unlit?

With a lot of investigations, we were able to determine a part of the topography of the place that has the potential to place the flames, in addition to the format of its visual beauty, so that it can remain beautiful when the flame is off.

Your choice of concrete-like powder combined with gas capsules in Zagros Candles creates an intriguing material contrast - what led you to select these specific materials, and how do they enhance both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the design?

The use of artificial stone material or pseudo-concrete represents the Zagros mountain range, so artificial stone material was used to evoke the same mountain.

The development of Zagros Candles appears to challenge traditional candle design limitations - could you share the research and experimentation process that led to creating a longer-burning, smoke-free flame while maintaining the visual appeal?

According to the proportions of contemporary life, it was necessary to design the product in a way that is in harmony with these proportionsLife in today's age must be fast and accurate, so using old candles that need constant maintenance and cleaning is not a good option, that's why we used a fuel with a new formula that doesn't need maintenance and cleaning, and at the same time Do not harm the environment

In designing Zagros Candles to serve as both a functional light source and sculptural piece, how did you balance the technical requirements of the refillable fuel system with the aesthetic goal of creating a contemporary design object?

Zagros is not only a modern candle but also a decorative itemWe thought about the times when this product might be off, so it should have a different and attractive appearance. That's why we considered the product in two states, on and off, and tried to design it

The environmental consciousness evident in Zagros Candles earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award - how does this sustainable approach reflect your broader vision for the future of lighting design?

This achievement definitely encouraged us to pay more attention to these features in new designs.Preventing damage to the environment and the living environment is one of our main goals, and we will always strive to minimize this damage by finding solutions that are suitable for modern life.Certainly, being seen and winning this competition has added to our motivation to make more efforts in the future.

Could you discuss how the cultural significance of mountains as symbols connecting heaven and earth influenced your placement of flames within the topographical forms of Zagros Candles?

Lighting a fire in Iranian culture is an ancient symbol, which is more colorful in the Zagros mountains and the tribes where they live.We were inspired to respect this culture

Your research into modern lifestyle needs clearly influenced Zagros Candles - how did your observations about contemporary living spaces shape the final dimensions and proportions of the design?

As I said before, contemporary life needs more precise proportionsA product can play a role in the current life that solves these worries and concernsZagros is a product that fulfills these needs

The recharging capability of Zagros Candles offers a unique solution to traditional candle limitations - what technical challenges did you face in developing this system, and how did you overcome them?

Finding an accurate and durable formula for the fuel was the main challenge, which we were able to achieve after conducting numerous experiments. This fuel had to be in accordance with contemporary living conditionsAmong the characteristics of this fuel are its non-smokeability, non-allergy to the consumer, and durabilityThese characteristics were achieved through numerous experiments

Looking at the success of Zagros Candles, how do you envision this design influencing future developments in sustainable lighting solutions, particularly in modern interior spaces?

Zagros is a new idea for modern candles. This idea can spread quickly and gain a large market share. In contemporary life, we see little time and many activities that can no longer be faced with these issues with past technology. So our product can meet the needs of contemporary man and at the same time be as beautiful as the past.

Laboratory alcohol lamps were only for medical use and were used in laboratoriesBut the redesign of this product has made it have a wider range of useIn the new design of this product, we can use it as a lighting item

Your innovative approach to combining laboratory aesthetics with modern design in the Liquid Fuel Candle has earned recognition at the A' Design Award - could you share the journey of transforming traditional laboratory alcoholic lamps into a contemporary lighting solution?

Laboratory alcohol lamps were only for medical use and were used in laboratoriesBut the redesign of this product has made it have a wider range of useIn the new design of this product, we can use it as a lighting item

The Liquid Fuel Candle uniquely marries concrete and glass materials - what inspired this distinctive combination, and how does it reflect your vision of bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern architectural spaces?

The two special materials that we use in the design of our products are glass and concrete, which makes it possible to use them in many spaces due to the attractive appearance of these two materials together.

How did your research into market dynamics and consumer purchasing power influence the development of the Liquid Fuel Candle's accessible pricing strategy while maintaining its premium design aesthetic?

Market surveys showed that people are more interested in products that can be continuously charged than disposable products and candles, so we used a cheap and new fuel so that a wide range of society can use this product.

The Liquid Fuel Candle offers an innovative solution to the common problem of candle deformation and waste - could you elaborate on the technical challenges you faced in developing a perpetual flame system that maintains the authentic ambiance of traditional candles?

One of our challenges was to achieve the final formula for the fuel, a fuel that could be easily available and durable, and also not harm the environment. This fuel is the most important part of the product, without it the product would be meaningless and uselessThe only feature that allowed us to create a product that is reminiscent of the past and at the same time meets the needs of contemporary life is liquid fuelThis fuel is highly durable and very cheap and is convenient for public consumption

Your design philosophy for the Liquid Fuel Candle emphasizes sustainability through longevity - how does this approach align with your broader vision for responsible design in contemporary living spaces?

Our team tries to produce products that are long-lasting and cause less damage to the environment and its resources.Producing a candle that can reduce this damage and at the same time be as beautiful as its previous format was something we always thought aboutSo we worked hard to solve this issue and finally reached the final product

The Liquid Fuel Candle features a sophisticated refueling system - could you walk us through the engineering considerations that went into creating a user-friendly yet elegant solution for fuel replenishment?

In addition, the method of refueling this product is very easy. You remove the lid of the product, pour fuel into it, close the lid again and light the wick. The ease of refueling and also recharging the product with fuel was one of the things that we tried to do in the easiest way possible because this product is going to be in the hands of many people with different abilities, so it was necessary for everyone to be able to use it easily.

In developing the Liquid Fuel Candle for Roch collections, how did you balance the brand's commitment to concrete-based design with the need for transparency and light diffusion in a lighting product?

Our goal is to create durable containers for storing liquid fuelConcrete material creates this ability and the finished price is cheapAnd finally, the flames balance the apparent heaviness of the concrete

The Liquid Fuel Candle's flame quality is notably smoke-free and odorless - what process led you to select specific fuel types, and how did this influence the overall design of the burning mechanism?

There are many diseases caused by solid paraffin candlesAllergies, respiratory problems and types of sensitivityWe were looking for a formula that would not create any of these problems for the consumer, and finally we produced a fuel that is odorless, smokeless, and sick to the consumer.

Looking at the cultural context of traditional candle use in Iran and contemporary global design trends, how does the Liquid Fuel Candle bridge these different worlds while creating its own unique identity?

Candle with liquid fuel fulfills both the needs of today's societyIt offers you both a real flame and has the ability to chargeFlame from the old world and charging capability from the modern world

Given the success of the Liquid Fuel Candle and its recognition with an A' Design Award, how do you envision evolving this concept to address future lighting needs while maintaining its core principles of sustainability and timeless design?

Obviously, this award has made this product more visible and its high potentialThe use of liquid fuel is only a primary solution to prevent damage to natureCertainly, in future designs, this idea will be more complete and will be accompanied by better and more attractive methodsAll our efforts are to create products with a good sense of the past in contemporary life
