Paolo D'Arrigo recognized for bathroom furniture and sanitary ware design by the international grand jury of the 2021 - 2022 A' Design Award & Competition

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COMO, Italy, April 22, 2022 /DesignNewswire/ Coral Electric Radiator by Paolo D'Arrigo, designed for Caos S.r.l., has been granted the Silver A' Design Award in the Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design category, A' Design Award & Competition has announced. The recognition forms part of the 2021 - 2022 A' Design Award & Competition and was reached through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who evaluated anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.

What the Silver A' Design Award Means

The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.

About Coral Electric Radiator

Coral is an electric radiator made entirely of aluminum. The form was generated with parametric design software, which grew a closed curve with a very extended perimeter. The long perimeter raises the thermal output and spreads heat evenly over the whole surface. The 8 mm aluminum sheet is laser cut and then milled for the electric heating system, and the thickness helps the radiator hold the reached temperature. Coral is offered in a rectangular format and a circular format. A dedicated application sets the days and times of operation, the heating speed and the temperature.

About Paolo D'Arrigo

I am a designer who explores the matter, appropriates it and gives it back to the world in the form of objects and furnishings. I was born in Rome in 1967. Design soon came into my life as an instinct and turned out in the most direct way, making me want to shape beloved and accurate objects. The practice of restoration and studies in sociology led me, later, to see in the profession of designer a faber of the relations between man, things and the world. I live design as an alchemy of nature and hi-tech. I practice form not as an aesthetic invention, but as the result of a process that is measured with the constraints of the material and pushes them further.

Award Record

Paolo D'Arrigo is a winner of 1 A' Design Award, including this recognition.

About the A' Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design Award

The A' Sanitary Ware Design Award is an international design competition recognizing good bathroom product designs by leading designers and brands worldwide. The competition is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to sanitary ware designers, bathroom furniture designers, industrial design studios and ceramic artists from all countries. Entries typically include toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, bidets and faucets. Awarded sanitary ware designs are published at https://designers.org/design-category/sanitary-ware

About A' Design Award & Competition

A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade organized annually since 2008. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The A' Design Award has a philanthropic mission to advance society through good design by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Entries are peer reviewed and anonymously evaluated by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. The A' Design Prize granted to eligible laureates includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, the upload of a work and the preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details

Unique Properties
High-performance electric radiators, made entirely of aluminum, can be controlled with the management app which allows you to set times and days of ignition, heating speed and temperature. Coral radiators have been designed using a "Form Finding" approach, which, by exploiting parametric modeling, allows the search for new geometric expressions. Coral's innovative characters are: Use of generative parametric software, Operation management via app, Single material product, High percentage of recyclability, Wide palette of finishes.
Inspiration
Inspired by the research of generative systems applications, the Coral radiators are proposed as a meeting point between design and nature within our homes. As in corals that weld sediments together and give rise to ever longer branches, a live physics simulator was used to generate the constant growth of a closed curve while maintaining its continuity. The goal was to define elements with an extremely extended perimeter, to generate a high thermal output and propose a distinctive aesthetic. Coral, an example of how the evolution of man through technology is resolved in the forms of nature.
Research
A live physics simulator was used to generate the constant growth of a closed curve while maintaining its continuity. The goal was to define elements with an extremely extended perimeter, to generate a high thermal output and propose a distinctive aesthetic.
Challenge
The challenge was to "design" the algorithm to generate the radiator shape. Since we were focused on the goal of defining the longest perimeter, but without neglecting the aesthetics of the product, we carefully calibrated the parameters to generate the final shape, a balance between function and aesthetics.
Realization and Technology
8mm thick aluminum sheet, shaped with laser cutting, subsequent processing by CNC milling machine for the electric heating system. Use of parametric software AAD (Algorithms-Aided Design) for design generation.
Operation and Interaction
Coral is programmable via a dedicated app, which allows you to set times and days of ignition, heating speed and temperature. The particular shape generated with AAD software, allows optimal heat distribution over the entire surface and optimizes the heat diffusion capacity in the room. The high thickness of the aluminum sheet determines a greater maintenance of the reached temperature.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in April 2020 in Rome and finished in December 2020 in Prato.
Specifications
Coral is offered in two formats, the 480X50X1480mm rectangular, which can be installed both vertically and horizontally, and the 800mm diameter circular one.
