Design Details
- Unique Properties
- The wavy stillness is a hospitality establishment that combines a luxury cafe and a sports bar in one single space. Located on the fourth floor of a commercial building, The two outer walls facing a movie theater are completely glazed, together with the third face open on a balcony facing the historical Himeji Castle. The counter wall and part of the ceiling are covered in a three dimensional wavy stainless plates that alters their reflection according to the viewers angle.
- Inspiration
- Since the space is aimed to combine several typologies of hospitality establishments, it combines design elements from each kind. The cafe part takes inspiration from luxury hotel lobbies with their colorful sofa and marble finishes. The sports bar aims to reproduce the cinematic effect of the neighboring movie theatre by combining 21 TV screens. And finally, the Bar auto referencing high end cocktail and wine bars.
- Research
- The research in this project was conducted to find out a way to combine the two different types of hospitality spaces in just one without altering one another, and to anchor the space within its context and surrounding. How can we integrate a luxury cafe and a sports bar in a unique space that serves both purposes. The materiality was also big part of the project research as it had a consequent impact on the general atmosphere.
- Challenge
- Since the design takes place on the fourth floor of an already existing facility, it would have been expansive to remodel the layout of the previous tenant, especially concerning the fire sprinklers. Therefore, the design had to exploit the same space configuration to deliver an otherwise already complicated combination of a luxury cafe and a sports bar. Placing the monitors necessary to modern sports bar was also a difficult task as it had a heavy impact on the cafe image.
- Realization and Technology
- The space follows an open plan so there is almost no wall. The pillar and the surrounding half wall are all covered in marble. All sofas are custom made, and the individual readymade chairs upholstery is matched to them. The counter back installed on the kitchen wall is made as a furniture and covered in a unique three dimensional stainless panels imitating water movement. The counter itself is made using artificial stone and the half wall is covered in glass mosaic tiles.
- Operation and Interaction
- The glass door entrance to the cafe bar is facing the movie theatre and gives straight to the counter on the right side. To the left, the open space dining room that is built in three different areas. The central Sofa with tables surrounding it, the U shaped red sofa on the movie theatre side and four couple sofa facing the balcony and enjoying a direct view to the historical Himeji Castle. Behind the counter wall the kitchen and the VIP room that has also a direct view to the castle.
