The award was conferred within the 2021 - 2022 A' Design Award & Competition and was decided through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who scored anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.

About the A' Design Award

The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.

About Torus Fan

Torus is a portable fan that distributes air in 360 degrees. Two motors drive the airflow, so several people around the fan can be cooled at the same time and without interruption. The circular air distribution removes the need for oscillation, which many standard fans use to reach a wider area. Noise produced during operation is kept low to improve comfort. The outer shell is inspired by the Venus flower basket, a natural structure of glass fibers that form small squares in a cylinder. Torus measures 18 inches in height and 10.5 inches in diameter.

About Dosun Shin and Seyla Muise

Dosun Shin is a Professor of Industrial Design program in The Design School at Arizona State University in the U.S. He holds a BFA in Industrial Design and received a MFA degree in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in August 2003. Prof. Shin started his design practice from 1999 working both in design consultancies and corporations. Since he arrived at ASU in 2004, he has continued to grow as a design practitioner, researcher, and educator in the discipline of Industrial Design to drive new product innovation through transdisciplinary collaborations.

Award Record

Dosun Shin and Seyla Muise is a winner of 5 A' Design Awards, including this recognition. The awards were granted between the 2016 - 2017 and the 2021 - 2022 editions of the A' Design Award & Competition.

About the A' Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Products Design Award

The A' HVAC Design Award is an international industrial design competition recognizing good design in the fields of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. It is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to HVAC system designers, industrial designers, HVAC brands and HVAC manufacturers from all countries. Typical entries include furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, air conditioners, ventilators and thermostats. The awarded hvac designs are published at https://designers.org/design-category/hvac

About A' Design Award & Competition

Organized annually since 2008, A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The philanthropic mission of the A' Design Award is to advance society through good design, by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Nominations are peer reviewed and evaluated anonymously by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. Eligible laureates receive the A' Design Prize, which includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, uploading a work and receiving a preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details

Unique Properties
Torus is the fan that distributes air in 360 degrees and offers a more efficient and sustainable way to better circulate and cool the air in a space. Torus uses two motors that provide 360° air flow, and this allows the fan to simultaneously cool multiple people around the fan continuously. In order to maximize comfort, Torus also aims to minimize the amount of noise that it produces while operating.
Inspiration
The outer shell of Torus was inspired by the Venus flower basket. Flexible but tough, these glass fibers make small squares and form a cylinder.
Research
According to US-Inventions.com, Franklin Institute in 1904 officially credited Schuyler Wheeler for inventing portable fan in 1882. The fan had two blades and used extremely dangerous open wound motor to push air forward. Since then, over 130 years, the fan has more or less stayed the same blowing air in only one direction. Our team aimed to change a market that has stayed the same for over 130 years. Although there have been some innovations in the shapes of the fan blades and energy efficiency, one-directional air flow is a highly inefficient way to circulate air throughout a space. Our product circulates air in 360 degrees without oscillation.
Challenge
When it comes to cooling a space down, stagnant air causes a great deal of discomfort for people. To manage the stagnant air in their home many people will opt to a standard box fan. Many standalone fans of today’s market lack the ability to properly circulate air within a space. User’s must settle for a fan that only blows in one direction or wait for a model that oscillates to swing back and forth in their direction. This forces users to choose between enduring long periods of stagnant warm air or sacrifice areas which their fan would help to cool down.
Realization and Technology
Torus uses a cutting-edge DC motor developed by LG to provide 360° air flow.
Operation and Interaction
Torus uses a cutting edge DC motor developed by LG to provide 360° air flow. This allows the fan to simultaneously cool multiple people around the fan continuously. In order to maximize comfort Torus also aims to minimize the amount of noise that it produces while operating. The new motor and unique vent design provide users with a single solution to cooling and comfort.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in August 2018 at Arizona State University in the U.S and finished in May 2019.
