FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COMO, Italy, April 16, 2024 /DesignNewswire/ Wandering Ark Hydrogen Powered Trimaran by Shenghan Lu, designed for Macau University of Science and Technology, has been granted the A' Design Award in the Futuristic Design category, A' Design Award & Competition has announced. The recognition forms part of the 2023 - 2024 A' Design Award & Competition and was determined through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who evaluated anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.

About the A' Design Award

The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.

About Wandering Ark Hydrogen Powered Trimaran

Wandering Ark is a concept for a hydrogen powered trimaran designed as a floating habitat at sea. The hull combines a trimaran form with an X bow shape to provide strong stability in different sea conditions. A large superstructure offers living space for residents. Solar, wind and wave systems collect energy, and a seawater hydrogen production system stores hydrogen on board. Fuel cells convert the stored hydrogen into electricity for propulsion and daily use. Water is the only emission of the process, so the vessel reaches zero emissions.

About Shenghan Lu

A graduate student who loves design and likes to look forward to the future of the world. The design direction is mainly future concept design, exploring ideas that cannot be realized but can be supported by present and future technologies into conceptual design works.Conceptual design does not consider the existing living standard, technology and materials, but only considers people's future and future products within the scope of the designer's foresight ability. It is a developmental design that starts from the fundamental concept of the future

Award Record

Shenghan Lu is a winner of 1 A' Design Award, including this recognition.

About the A' Futuristic Design Award

The A' Futuristic Design Award is an international futuristic design competition recognizing cutting-edge futuristic design concepts from designers worldwide. It is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to futuristic designers, futuristic brands, futuristic architects and concept product designers from all countries. Typical entries include conceptual architectures, advanced robotics, innovative transportation systems, futuristic fashion designs, progressive furniture pieces and next-gen electronic gadgets. The awarded futuristic designs are published at https://designers.org/design-category/futuristic

About A' Design Award & Competition

Organized annually since 2008, A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The philanthropic mission of the A' Design Award is to advance society through good design, by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Nominations are peer reviewed and evaluated anonymously by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. Eligible laureates receive the A' Design Prize, which includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, uploading a work and receiving a preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details

Unique Properties
Wandering Ark is designed as a large trimaran, with extremely strong stability to cope with different sea conditions and a large area of superstructure living space. It integrates multiple energy collection methods, such as solar energy, wind energy, wave energy, seawater hydrogen production system, and Ensure energy supply. Wandering Ark is a powerful habitat that lives in harmony with the marine environment.
Inspiration
In response to sea level rise in the future, not only will the land area shrink, but the frequency of marine disasters will also increase. For sea survival mode and floating cities, further exploration and thinking are needed. To solve these problems, it is envisioned to build a mobile city that can be self-sufficient at sea using clean energy and avoid marine disasters. Today, a single new energy source cannot provide a sustainable supply for ships. Future ship energy harvesting technology needs to be studied and ship functions innovated through integrated design.
Research
Use STAR CCM+ simulation software to conduct seakeeping and pressure tests on the trimaran and calculate the best solution under different circumstances to improve the final design.
Challenge
Stability and energy saving factors need to be considered in the design. The hull adopts an innovative shape design that combines X BOW with a trimaran. It has strong wave penetration capability, which is also crucial for reducing energy loss.
Realization and Technology
Modeling Extraction: Terraces are a symbol of the symbiosis between man and nature. Combining terrace elements with ship design expresses the concept of respecting nature. This is reflected in the ship’s zero emissions and self-sufficiency. The hierarchy of terraces visually enhances stability, combining traditional aesthetics with modern ship design.
Operation and Interaction
Wandering Ark can survive on the ocean for a long time and make full use of resources. Solar, wind and ocean power generation. Seawater is directly obtained through the hydrogen production system, and the generated hydrogen is stored and converted into a fuel cell to power the system. Although the Flettner rotor cannot generate electricity, it can directly assist the propulsion system to save energy consumption.
