More About Black Tulip Turkish Coffee Set

The traditionally cylindrical-shaped Turkish coffee cup is redesigned to have a cubic shape. Instead of protruding, the cup handles are integrated into the cubic form of the cup. A square-shaped saucer with a cavity to hold the cup and prevent it from slipping complements the overall design. One corner of the saucer is curved up slightly to simplify picking it up. Downward curvature of the tray corner when the saucer is placed on the tray creates a visual impression of a tulip. The tray also has cavities on which saucers are placed, which help with carrying and serving.

Design Details

Unique Properties
Turkish coffee is a method of preparation and cooking coffee. Coffee is cooked in slow heat to create a thick layer of foam and the foam is transferred to cups before resuming cooking, which contribute to its unique taste. Turkish coffee is a a symbol of hospitality and friendship. Special cups are used for guests as a token of respect, which have led to creating designs of artistic value. Therefore, the design is formed by an accumulation of cultural and traditional imprints.
Inspiration
Turkish coffee cup and a carrying tray are redesigned, inspired by a modern view of the cultural forms and shapes. The tulip figure on the coffee cup and the tea tray used in Turkish coffee houses gave the shape to the design.
Research
During the research phase, many different ceramic cups from prehistoric times to the present were investigated. In addition, various modern ceramic and porcelain products have been explored and a synthesis was tried to be created by investigating the figures belonging to Turkish culture and life style.
Challenge
Black tulip coffee set is a project where the tradition and culture are being tried to be synthesized with a modern design. So the greatest challenge in this work is the balance between modern and traditional.
Realization and Technology
Cups and saucers will be made of porcelain for durability. The carrying handle of the molded plywood tray is solid wood.
Operation and Interaction
In this project the saucers extended from the tray at a certain amount of size. In this way, cups and saucers in the tray can easily be taken from each side. This makes service easier. Another feature is that the corner of the saucer is curved up slightly. This approach ensures a comfortable hold. In addition to these, the tray handle provides a more balanced carriage.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in May 2015 in Turkey and ended in July 2015.
Specifications
