About Unvisible Landscapes Lamp

Unvisible Landscapes is a series of lamps based on three dimensional fractals. The forms recall urban landscapes and are generated in fractal modelling software. Displacement maps are applied to the surfaces in three dimensional modelling software, and the resulting shapes are printed with PLA filament. Each printed object is fitted with LED strips and a power supply, so the fractal is presented in the form of light. The series makes mathematical structures visible in physical space and brings them into the field of art and design.

Design Details

Unique Properties
3 dimensional fractals that bring associations with urban landscapes generated in fractal generation software and then transposed to physical space by 3d printing and presented in the form of light.
Inspiration
Objective mathematical notions must be thought as timeless entities and are not to be regarded as being conjured into existence at the moment that they are first humanly perceived. Roger Penrose, The Road to Reality. A complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe. Eternal beauty (...) nor this beauty will appear like the beauty of a face or hands or anything corporeal, or like a thought or knowledge, or existing in any other being, but a beauty itself constant and eternal. Plato, The Symposium
Research
Fractals generated by mutation of formulas and navigation in Mandelbulb 3d software. Then rendered and transposed into video, digital prints and 3d prints.
Challenge
This design is a part of the project 'Unvisible Spaces' with the aim to visualize and sonify 'unvisible' phenomena that take place in nature and introduce them to the field of art and design.
Realization and Technology
Fractal generation through Mandelbulb 3d software. 3d processing was made by applying displacement maps to surfaces in 3d modeling software. Physical objects were printed on a 3d printer with te use of PLA filament and then equipped with LED strips for lighting.
Operation and Interaction
A light with a power supply
Project Duration and Location
The project starded in 2019, and was exhibited in Pavilion 02 in Venice in May 2019
