Now I am a Co-founder and Executive Director of Product Design at Butlr. Technologies and Radical Department Inc., my startup and studio are based in San Francisco.

How did you become a designer?

Let me be very honest...it was about 9 years ago, as a Chinese high school graduate, I have no idea what I was going to do and I didn't know what is industrial design. that time I was really into photography, one day I saw a picture of a camera, Leica M6, the classic one with blue leather skin, I got hooked... it was the last day I had to decide my major, so I went through the list - I choose the one looks like it - product design. It was the best coincident and i feel it's destiny.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

Most of my work explores design opportunities in associate with new technology. I like creating new materials from bits and atoms. Like my work "illusory material", my partner Honghao and I invented a computational workflow to create material that cannot be made with any traditional manufacturing method. I believe computation and technology will play a big part in how designer designs.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

50% very depressed, I got stuck in the design process easily. And I always look for a perfect design solution.

30% I feel intense. It makes me think fast.

20% I feel relieving and thriving.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

My time at MIT. I understand design differently now.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

Become the designer to be remembered for centuries.

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

Design freely and don't get stuck in 'Design thinking'.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

I can't say I'm truly successful yet...

What is your day to day look like?

emails and design.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

Now I read a lot in Technology review and some academic conferences.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

A good design should be inspiring, it extends people's imagination.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

It is never ready...

What is your biggest design work?

Illusory Material. It envisions the future of industrial design with multi-material 3D printing. "Illusory Material" is a computational workflow that allows every designer to play with CMF or even material properties that never existed before in the design process, creating dream-like material and apply them into real-world product design. This project is an envision of future design methodology using computation power with the most advanced 3D printing technology in the world: multi-material voxel printing.

Imagine designing everyday products with "impossible" materials that only exist in the digital world; Imagine a future where designers can manipulate the color, texture, and reflectivity of materials across time and different viewing angles; Imagine the future of color creation is not based on layers of chemical paints, but a combination with optical 3D printed optical lenses and simple color blocks; imagine a physical material can display dynamically by itself without electronic input; imagine an invisible object that is informative, a hard object that feels soft....

Who is your favourite designer?

Ross Lovegrove and Tokujin Yoshioka.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

I have the best partner in the world: Honghao Deng. We combine our knowledge in industrial design and architecture. Finding a good partner is the key factor to get success in design.

With this design, I hope to blur the line between the digital and physical world, bringing "impossible" materials to real-world product design.

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

With this design, I hope to blur the line between the digital and physical world, bringing "impossible" materials to real-world product design. With the newest fabrication technology and computational power such as multi-material printing, 4D printing, soft robotics, we can embed information into three-dimensional matter (voxel), expanding binary material presence to dynamic material experience in everyday products.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

A computational workflow that allows creating optical effect on any free-form surface.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

This limited edition is available for sale. Please contact Designer Jiani Zeng at jnzeng7@gmail.com for more information. It will also be exhibited in some design exhibitions and conferences.

How long did it take you to design this particular concept?

3 months research on lenticular printing and voxel printing, 2 weeks on this particular form.

Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?

Unream is one of the products designed with "illusory material": a new material organization that responds directly to the user intervention or the environment, creating 'dream-like' physical materials that used to exists only in the digital world. With illusory material, we envision a future where designers can manipulate the color, texture, and reflectivity of materials across time and different viewing angles; Imagine the future of color creation is not based on layers of chemical paints, but a combination with optical 3D printed optical lenses and simple color blocks; imagine a physical material can display dynamically by itself without electronic input; imagine an invisible object that is informative, a hard object that feels soft....Please visit our website for more details: https://www.illusorymaterial.com/

Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?

The copyright belongs to Jiani Zeng and Honghao Deng, we will be selling it. However, it needs lots of manual processing and it's limited edition for now.

What made you design this particular type of work?

Our love for new tech and multi-material 3D printing. We are a team of an industrial designer, an architect, and researchers from MIT and Harvard.

Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?

Prof. Axel Kilian from MIT architecture, for pointing out and clarifying the research direction that I truly believe in and enjoy doing; for pushing me beyond my comfort field in industrial design, to think big and go deeper in design fundamentally; for all the in-depth, critical and honest feedback - always challenge me to push an idea further.

Prof. Stefanie Mueller from MIT EECS, for all her inspiring work and conversations in HCI, digital fabrications and multi-material printing; for her great trust and freedom she gave me in exploring digital materials; for her openness and encouragement towards any student who has passion in personal fabrication and for being so generous in sharing her knowledge in the field of user interaction design.

Who is the target customer for his design?

Anyone who appreciates design with materials that cannot be seen from traditional production.

What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?

There is no similar design in the market so far, we invented the pipeline for "illusory material" to be applied in any 3D form.

How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?

Unreal+dream. We are not very good at naming....

Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?

Currently, I am a Co-founder and Executive Director of Product Design at Butlr. Technologies and Radical Department Inc., my startup and studio is based in San Francisco.

What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

I want to equip every industrial designer the ability to manipulate design from the material creation level and from bits and atoms, instead of being limited by conventional material selection and production. I hope every designer can see "object skin" as separate entities for creation, instead of a uniform material surface that can only be chosen from limited collections. I believe only when those "creators" of products think freely that the general users can experience differently from each product.

Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

Let me be very honest...it was about 9 years ago, as a Chinese high school graduate, I have no idea what i was going to do and I din't know what is industrial design. that time I was really into photography, one day I saw a picture of a camera, Leica M6, the classic one with blue leather skin, I got hooked... it was the last day I had to decide my major, so i went through the list - i choose the one looks like it - product design. What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

I'm not a legend. don't be me.

What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

Good design should be inspiring, it shows you what the future will be like, it leads your imagination.

What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

My first step would be introducing my vision and research outcome "illusory material" ([https://www.illusorymaterial.com/](https://www.illusorymaterial.com/)) to the designers' world - I want to equip every industrial designer the ability to manipulate design from the material creation level and from bits and atoms, instead of being limited by conventional material selection and production. I hope every designer can see "object skin" as separate entities for creation, instead of a uniform material surface that can only be chosen from limited collections. I believe only when those "creators" of products think freely that the general users can experience differently from each product.

Secondly, I hope to blur the line between the digital and physical world, bringing "impossible" materials to real-world product design. With the newest fabrication technology and computational power such as multi-material printing, 4D printing, soft robotics, we can embed information into three-dimensional matter (voxel), expanding binary material presence to dynamic material experience in everyday products.
