Designer Interview

16 May 2021

Growing up, I've always felt that the ability to create something was very cool. So when I discovered Industrial Design I knew immediately that this would be what I wanted to take up in college. It seemed fun and less intimidating than an engineering degree.

My studio is called Build Republic. I felt that a long term investment in cultivating a good design culture within SME's and start ups was lacking. So I founded this studio with a name that encourages companies to invest long term in building excellent products, building cult brands and building a strong design culture within their companies.

innovation, beauty and delight

Working so many years in the industry made me realize that it's really the quality of the team, collaborators and client that makes design most enjoyable to me. The type of product does not matter too much, but rather working with a high degree of confidence that the design will be successful is what's important.

When there is a high degree of conviction with the design brief.

Apart from usefulness and usability, I focus a lot on ensuring that a product has an identity that is in-line with the brand aesthetics and philosophy. It is how brands engage and build relationship with customers.

A design is successful when it pushes innovation and society forward or brings profit to the company.

I always look for clever ways of utilizing manufacturing capabilities and materials.

My design style is whatever is right for the brand and its customers.

Select a designer with a high degree of interest towards your industry. This is how you can trust that the designer will do the work to learn and design something that is right for your customers and not for the designer.

Design work for brands with small but talented team is most enjoyable because it's very efficient and often most effective in ensuring innovation.

Grand Interview

22 October 2025 · Ambi Climate Mini Smart Air-conditioned Controller

We designed the Ambi Climate Mini to learn and adapt to user behavior, allowing it to understand and optimize individual comfort preferences. But what sets it apart is its ability to also consider external influences, such as weather and humidity, and combine them with user behavior to create a truly personalized experience. Through machine learning algorithms, the device learns the user's daily routines, temperature preferences, and other habits, and adjusts its settings accordingly. For instance, if a user consistently adjusts the temperature to a certain level at a specific time of day, and it's also humid outside, the device will learn this pattern and automatically make the adjustment to not only meet the user's temperature preference but also to account for the humidity, ensuring the user's comfort level is always optimized.

The idea was to create a design that would bring warmth and tactility to a product that's typically perceived as cold and technical. We drew inspiration from everyday objects that evoke a sense of comfort and familiarity, like ceramic teacups and wooden coasters. We wanted to capture the essence of these objects and translate it into a design language that would make the Ambi Climate Mini feel approachable and inviting. We focused on the materials, textures, and curves that make these objects feel so welcoming. We used a combination of natural materials, to create a tactile experience that's both soothing and premium. The rounded shapes and gentle curves of the device are reminiscent of a teacup, while the wooden accents evoke the feeling of a coaster. By incorporating these elements, we created a design that's not only visually appealing but also invites the user to touch and interact with it.

We used thermal simulations to identify heat buildup areas and experimented with various ventilation strategies. However, traditional vents and grills didn't align with our goal of designing a product that's warm and welcoming, rather than intimidatingly high-tech. We wanted the Ambi Climate Mini to feel like a natural part of the home, not a sleek but soulless gadget. We realized that carefully engineered assembly gaps could provide sufficient ventilation while maintaining a clean and minimalist aesthetic. Through iterative testing and simulation, we optimized the gap size and placement to ensure accurate temperature readings.

We focused on simplifying the internal electronics and streamlining the manufacturing process, which allowed us to allocate more resources to the premium materials and craftsmanship. We also worked closely with our suppliers to source high-quality materials at competitive prices, ensuring that the beech wood accents and other premium elements remained a key part of the product's design.

Our user research revealed that people have different preferences for device placement, depending on their home decor and personal habits. However, we also understood that the placement of Ambi Climate is crucial to ensure the accuracy of indoor climate readings and control of the air conditioner. By allowing people more options for placement, we're helping to ensure that the device is positioned in a way that provides the most accurate readings and effective control.

There were three critical phases that shaped the final product's success. Firstly, the user research and validation phase helped us understand the needs and pain points of our target audience. This informed our design decisions and ensured that the product met user expectations.Secondly, the prototype development and testing phase allowed us to refine the product's design and functionality. We created multiple prototypes, tested them with users, and gathered feedback to iterate and improve the product.Lastly, the pilot production and quality assurance phase enabled us to fine-tune the manufacturing process, ensure the product's quality and reliability, and make any necessary adjustments before mass production.

The design language strategy is centered around creating products that are intuitive, user-friendly, and aesthetically relatable. We envision future products in the lineup building upon this foundation, incorporating similar design elements, materials, and user interface principles. This will create a sense of continuity and familiarity across our product lineup, making it easier for users to navigate and interact with Ambi Climate's products. As the product lineup expands and technology advances, the design language strategy will continue to evolve. We'll incorporate new design elements, materials, and technologies that align with the brand values and user needs. However, the core principles of the design language strategy will remain consistent, ensuring that products continue to embody the Ambi brand identity and provide a seamless user experience.

We recognized that the home is a deeply personal and emotional space, and that the products we bring into our homes can have a profound impact on our well-being and happiness. We designed the Ambi Climate Mini to be a calming and reassuring presence in the home, with a gentle and soothing aesthetic that promotes feelings of comfort and relaxation. I think we'll see a continued trend towards more seamless and intuitive integration of technology into the home environment. As technology becomes more advanced and ubiquitous, it will be increasingly important for designers to prioritize user experience and aesthetics, creating products that feel like a natural part of the home, rather than an intrusion.

We aimed to strike a balance between learning speed and accuracy. A shorter learning period might lead to inaccurate assumptions about user preferences, while a longer period might frustrate users who want to see immediate results. Our research suggested that seven days was the optimal timeframe for the device to gather sufficient data and make informed decisions about temperature adjustments. We considered factors like data sampling rates, algorithm complexity, and the need for a robust and reliable learning process. We also ensured that the device could adapt to changing user behavior and preferences over time.

It will drive innovation leading to more advanced and user-friendly HVAC automation. We'll see a shift towards more integrated and A.I. automated systems that we won't even have to interact with.
