Design Interview

Uzi Dashboard · 4 questions

My client came to me and ask me if I can design a high-tech feeling of a dashboard for them. So I took a lot of reference from the stock-trading software and HUD designs in the sci-fi movies.

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

My client came to me and ask me if I can design a high-tech feeling of a dashboard for them. So I took a lot of reference from the stock-trading software and HUD designs in the sci-fi movies. The tone is dark with the combination of blue and purple, suggesting a mysterious feeling of the future. In terms of user experience, we want to make sure that the usability and clarity are good. So there is only one main page for the product, the rest of the features like news, trading, currency details, wallets are in the form of popup. Besides, this product has a function for social networking. So we put a chat room on the right part of the dashboard. Users can always reach to the chatroom and exchange their ideas with other users in the community.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

Consider the scenario that tons of information will be displayed to the users. Clarity and layout efficiency is our main concern. First, we decided to use a dark theme for our color scheme. This can increase readability for users. Also, a dark background relieves eye pressure from users and is more user-friendly for someone staring at the screen all day long. Second, we try our best to pack as much information as we can in a limited space without sacrificing usability. We use mono-type for typography so that users can still read the copy when it is small. In terms of tables and charts, we took a lot of effort to make sure that it is easy to read. Another challenge is to make everything responsive. To do that, we carefully calculate the margin between each section and determine which width of the column is flexible, which one is not. For the visual style, our client specifically asked us to adapt the tone of "techy" and "SciFi", making their product obtain the sense of sophistication but is easy to use.

How long did it take you to design this particular concept?

It took my team around 1.5-2 months to finalize the design. We spent most of the time communicating the structure of the products and the user flow. Additionally, designing the graph and charts was very challenging. We made some research in taking references from stock-trading software and fin-tech websites. This helped us significantly because trading crypto-currency is almost identical to stocks exchange. Another challenge was that most of the news was crawled from other media, so we need to make the UI more adaptable to the content from different sites in different formats.

Who is the target customer for his design?

this product is aimed for crypto-currency trader. Uzi dashboard provides them a combination of news integration, e-wallet, and currency trading. In terms of product design, it is a prospective idea that combining the element of trading software and social networking together. They are usually mutually exclusive. We can regard this product as an experiment of a futuristic form of financial service.

Design Legend Interview

20 questions

I studied at the National Taiwan University of Education. My major was product design. However, I decided to change my career path at the moment when I saw the iPhone4 came out. So I started learning about the UI/UX.

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

I studied at the National Taiwan University of Education. My major was product design. However, I decided to change my career path at the moment when I saw the iPhone4 came out. So I started learning about the UI/UX. Currently, I'm a senior UI/UX designer at NVIDIA. I have over 5+ years of working experience from start-ups to 500 Fortune companies. I have deep understandings of the Chinese market.

What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

When I was a student, I was obsessed with the beauty of art and industrial design, such as automobiles, furniture, products, paintings, sculpture. It inspired me to go for a degree in design.

What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

I design mostly for mobile apps and websites. But, I also design graphics and printings for personal projects.

What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

They shouldn't. In fact, I think everyone should have their own path in their design career. Learn from the best people and then have your own opinion.

What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

A good designer achieves the target their clients give them. They get the job done, which is a good thing. But, their works lack a personal opinion. A great designer put their philosophy and ideology into their works. It is very hard to do that. As a result, tackling the difficulty of finding a balance between clients and your design ideas makes one a great designer.

What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

A good design should always be fulfilling the users'/clients' requirements. As the old cliche "form follows function" goes, I think that we all agree with that.

What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

Good design provides a better solution or result for your client. It has several benefits: it amplifies clients' branding, it reduces the cost of production with a better solution, it makes a product more sustainable. The benefits are countless but you get the idea.

What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

I am fond of creating a GUI for sci-fi movies. I am fascinated by the details and complications of the high-tech interface, and it is quite a joy in the process of drawing all the UI elements.

What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

I like to make a background study before jumping into the brainstorming. Don't rush into the phase of creation. It will constrain your creativity. Do background research really helps you discover more insights and enrich the story in your design.

Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

That will definitely be G-munk.

check their works if you have time: https://gmunk.com/

What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

I believe that a design succeeds when it brings users an experience of joy other than just fulfilling the functionality. It could be a beautiful graphics or a convenient product feature that improves people's productivity, depending on what type of media your work is in.

How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

Practice makes you perfect. Start practicing!

How do you define design, what is design for you?

Design is a methodology for solving a problem through analysis and prototyping. It is a powerful tool that helps you achieve your target. Although different tasks of design require a different skill set, the mindset is the same.

What's your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

I'm working on a project that involves machine learning in the process of design. You can see lots of people start using AI to create art and design with hyper-realistic results nowadays. So I'm studying the topics of AI and design.

How does design help create a better society?

I think one of the responsibilities of a designer is not to create new problems when they are solving old ones. Many people design something for the sake of design. This is just pointless. So the basic thing we can do is to not create more pollution on the earth.

Where do you think the design field is headed next?

Design always evolves with technology. The future of design will depend on the media that design is applied. In other words, I think we can definitely see more designs for digital products. It might be VR/AR, but we are still on an early stage of VR/AR.

What is your life motto as a designer?

Less but better.

Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

I think they are not mutually exclusive. When enough people design the same kind of style, they shape a trend. When a trend rises, people lean to it subconsciously.

What is the role of technology when you design?

Technology helps us reduce the cost of prototyping and accelerate our speed of design iteration. We should keep an open mind and keep learning in the era of the internet.

Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

《The Design of Everyday Things》by Donald A. Norman. It is a classic of design publication. The principles mentioned in the book are very helpful when you design.

Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

Several design inspiration sites, such as Pinterest, Behance, or Dribbble, help me come with up ideas. Also, I like to go to a bookstore browsing different kinds of books for more creativity.

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

I am now living in Beijing. It is a densely populated city where around 20M people live in this city. It is crowded, and everything comes and goes in the speed of light, which makes me gives me another point of view on chaos. While most of the designers incline to order, chaos is a pristine state in nature. Instead of resisting it, we should try to embrace it. You will be surprised by the fact that there is another order within the chaos, which share some similarity to the design we see.

What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

At first glance, their works. Find a designer or studio that has the style of work you like. It will very painful if the designer is not good at the style you want. Then, their communication skills. Good designers will try many different ways to understand what you need and elaborate on what they want to do.

positive: It feels satisfying when you create something. And it feels even better when someone loves your design.

negatives: We let our work affect our lifestyle in a negative way. Sometimes, we lose track of time when we put too much attention on details that is not worthy.

What is your "golden rule" in design?

Less but better.

What skills are most important for a designer?

The ability of thinking....well this is for every human beings :)

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

I like to break things down to small tasks and handle them according to their priority. Priority consists of two elements: importance and urgency. If a task is important and urgent, unsurprisingly, you must do it now; If it is not important and urgent, don't even think about it. The trick is to make sure you do the "important but less urgent" task every day, and try not to turn down the "unimportant but urgent" tasks as much as you can. This will make sure you put you energy on the right things.

What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

Can you finish the changes by the end of the day? Seriously, I hate it!

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

It depends on the scale of a project. If it is on a large scale, I prefer to get some help; If it is a project which has sufficient time to run, I will probably do it on my own.
