Hi, I'm Xuechen Chen, an architect and designer based in New York. My passion for architecture stems from a childhood fascination with art and a keen observation of urban transformations in China.
After earning my B.Arch from Pratt Institute and an M.Design from the University of Pennsylvania, I've developed a multidimensional perspective that blends technical expertise with a deep appreciation for cultural richness and social impact.
My designs aim to strike a balance between functionality and aesthetics, reflecting both the evolving urban landscape and my dedication to purposeful design.

What motivates me to design is the deep belief that spaces can profoundly impact people's lives. Growing up in China, I saw firsthand the rapid urban reconstruction and how it affected our cultural and social landscapes. I watched as people were often confined into concrete boxes, losing the comfort and warmth of their original lifestyles. This experience gave me a strong appreciation for the power of design to influence how we interact with our surroundings and with each other.

Becoming an architect and designer felt like the natural path for me since I was young. When I was growing up, I always had deep appreciation for art and witnessing the urban reconstruction process in China has strongly influenced my personal aspiration of becoming an architect. By witnessing the ignorance of the cultural and human aspects of the reconstruction, I recognized the power of creativity to extend beyond purely function or purely aesthetics. It resonates deeply with our human experiences, emotions, and our connection to the urban landscape. Balancing both function and aesthetics in my designs, I aim to blend creativity with practicality, reflecting both the evolving urban relationship and my dedication to purposeful design.

My favorite kind of design revolves around incorporating cultural and social reflections. I am drawn to designs that prioritize people's interactions and experiences, fostering an approachable atmosphere. I admire projects dedicated to enhancing users' needs and interactions while maintaining high aesthetic standards. I especially wish to design more civic and cultural projects, as they have the potential to create meaningful, inclusive spaces that enrich communities and reflect their unique identities.

Embrace every opportunity to learn and explore new ideas. Stay open-minded, seek diverse experiences, and continuously challenge yourself to grow and innovate.

A great designer focuses on human experience and the impact of their design, rather than just its aesthetic appeal. They have a unique vision that pushes boundaries and sets new standards. While good designers meet existing expectations, great designers create something that resonates deeply with people.
Ultimately, a great designer's work goes beyond looking good; it inspires, influences, and leaves a lasting positive impact on the community and the industry. Their designs are about creating meaningful experiences and making a difference in people's lives.

When considering what elevates a good design to a truly exceptional one, I find that it's about seamlessly integrating cultural and social elements. Grand Interview

22 October 2025 · The Folding Boat Community Center

The inspiration for The Folding Boat Community Center’s multifunctional vision originated from an in-depth analysis of the community’s historical, cultural, and environmental context. This project was conceived in response to the community’s need for a space that integrates recreation, education, and preservation seamlessly. During my initial research, I observed that the community was deeply rooted in its relationship with water—both as a geographical feature and a cultural symbol. The rowing facility symbolizes this connection, offering an interactive and athletic expression of it.The concept further evolved when I considered how architecture could foster cross-generational engagement. Libraries are traditionally places of knowledge exchange, and I saw an opportunity to reimagine this role. Rather than serving solely as a repository of books, the library component was designed as a dynamic learning hub, encouraging collaboration and creativity. Similarly, the museum emerged as a way to celebrate the community’s identity, focusing on the narrative of water as a unifying element. By integrating these three functions, I sought to create a space where the past, present, and future converge—a place of memory, activity, and innovation.

The folded metal roof of The Folding Boat Community Center was inspired by both the fluid dynamics of the Harlem River and the cultural significance of origami-like forms in design. This feature reflects a commitment to material innovation and environmental responsibility, which aligns with the project’s broader goals. Aesthetically, the angular folds mimic the rippling surface of the river, creating a harmonious connection between the built environment and its natural surroundings. The roof's bold geometry also frames interior spaces dynamically, echoing the transformative nature of the activities hosted within the center, from exhibitions to rowing practices.

The Folding Boat Community Center was designed with a deep respect for the duality of its surroundings. The historical elements of the district inspired a commitment to preserving the area’s cultural identity, while the modern aspects encouraged us to push the boundaries of innovative design. This balance was achieved by using materials and forms that resonate with both eras: for example, the choice of weathered steel nods to industrial history, while the sleek, angular geometry reflects contemporary architectural trends. Additionally, the integration of public spaces fosters a sense of continuity, allowing visitors to experience the area’s heritage in a dynamic, forward-looking context.

The seamless integration of walls and ceilings in The Folding Boat Community Center was born from a desire to create a flowing, uninterrupted spatial experience that mimics the movement of water, a key element of the project’s inspiration. The interplay of light and shadow along these surfaces was designed to evoke the rippling effect of the Harlem River, fostering a sense of immersion and harmony with the site’s natural surroundings.

The material palette for The Folding Boat Community Center was carefully chosen to balance durability with aesthetic harmony, especially given its proximity to the waterfront. Metal was selected for its resilience against moisture and corrosion, ensuring longevity in a challenging environment. Glass was incorporated to foster transparency and connectivity, blurring the line between the interior spaces and the surrounding river landscape. Wood panels, meanwhile, added warmth and a tactile quality that resonates with the community’s human scale. Together, these materials create a dynamic yet cohesive visual language that complements the natural and urban elements of the site.

Optimizing the spatial layout of The Folding Boat Community Center required a strategic approach to zoning and circulation. The rowing facility, library, and museum were positioned to capitalize on their unique functional requirements while fostering interconnectivity. The rowing facility occupies the lower level, providing direct access to the waterfront and minimizing disruption to quieter activities. The library, situated centrally, acts as a bridge, offering serene reading areas with views of the river. The museum occupies the main entrance, where its exhibits can benefit from natural light and panoramic perspectives. Shared spaces like the lobby and atrium create a unifying core that encourages interaction and exploration between the three functions.

Project like this emphasizes the function and aesthetics of materials, which guided my choice to use locally sourced, environmentally responsive elements. Meanwhile, my experience in the digital realm allowed me to experiment with parametric design tools to simulate and optimize the folding geometry of the roof and walls. This process ensured the project’s technical feasibility while achieving a sculptural, deconstructed aesthetic. The combination of these influences allowed for a design that respects the complexity of the site while embracing innovation.

The site’s topography played a pivotal role in shaping The Folding Boat Community Center’s design. The varying slopes informed the building’s tiered structure, allowing for natural integration with the landscape and minimizing excavation. This approach not only reduced environmental impact but also enhanced the connection between the building and its surroundings. The stepped design creates terraces that serve as outdoor gathering spaces, while the sloping roof mirrors the gradient of the terrain. Internally, the levels create distinct zones for the rowing facility, library, and museum, further emphasizing their unique functions while maintaining spatial fluidity.

The Folding Boat Community Center is designed as a cultural nexus where athletic, literary, and historical programs converge to foster community connections and lifelong learning. By hosting rowing events and workshops, the facility celebrates the community’s aquatic heritage and encourages physical activity. The library provides a quiet retreat for intellectual growth, while the museum offers curated exhibits that explore local history and broader cultural narratives. This blend of programs ensures that the center serves as a platform for interaction across generations and interests, creating a vibrant hub where residents and visitors alike can engage, learn, and connect.

Sustainability was a core consideration in the design of The Folding Boat Community Center. Material choices prioritized durability and low environmental impact, including recycled metal panels and sustainably sourced wood. The building’s orientation maximizes natural light and ventilation, reducing energy consumption. Additionally, green roofs and rainwater harvesting systems were designed to be integrated to manage stormwater runoff and promote biodiversity. The proximity to the waterfront also inspired passive cooling strategies, leveraging the site’s natural breezes. Collectively, these measures ensure that the center not only serves its community but also respects and preserves its delicate ecological context.

Integrating active excavation sites was a deliberate choice to merge the work of preserving artifacts with the process of discovery. The design allows visitors to see ongoing excavations alongside preserved elements. By placing excavation areas within the research building, the museum becomes a place where history is both maintained and revealed in real time. This approach shows that the work of uncovering and protecting the past is part of a continuous process, making the museum a site of living research.

The sequence that simulates submersion was inspired by the tar itself and its role in preserving history. This entry experience creates a sense of being drawn into the site’s layered past. By experiencing the feeling of descending beneath the tar, visitors are set up for a closer look at the preservation and discovery processes that define the La Brea Tar Pits. This journey helps to frame the historical context and encourages a deeper engagement with the site's story.

The concrete cantilevers required careful planning to balance structural integrity with the desired visual effect. Detailed simulations were conducted to ensure proper load distribution and safety. We used advanced reinforcement techniques and modular design to allow the cantilevers to extend while remaining stable. These elements support the museum’s idea of linking preserved history with ongoing discovery, using the structure itself to mirror that balance.

The research building’s layout is designed as a network of interconnected paths that lead visitors through active research areas. This arrangement makes it possible for the public to observe the excavation process up close. By integrating educational displays and direct views of research activities along these paths, the design creates a setting where learning and science work side by side. The circulation encourages visitors to move freely between information areas and live research spaces.

The design process started with a thorough study of the site’s history and paleontology. I aimed to use modern forms to support and highlight the evidence of the past. This was done by pairing clean, modern structures with materials and details that reference the site's natural history. Iterative design sessions helped refine the balance so that contemporary construction methods complemented the story of the La Brea Tar Pits without overwhelming it.

My work in materialist architecture emphasizes a clear look at the materials and how they function in space. For this project, I focused on breaking down traditional forms and reassembling them in a way that exposed the materials’ true nature. This method allowed the building to reflect the site’s process of discovery, where fragments of history are carefully extracted and then reinterpreted. The approach supports a practical understanding of both the construction process and the preservation of history.

The decision to display both stored fossils and hallway exhibits was driven by a desire to show the full process of paleontological work. Stored fossils highlight the careful conservation process, while hallway displays give visitors immediate access to new discoveries. This method creates a narrative that links the work behind the scenes with what is on public view. The approach encourages visitors to understand the complete cycle of excavation, preservation, and display.

The design is intended to serve as a model for future museums by integrating active research areas directly into public spaces. This setup allows visitors to see research in progress, which makes the institution a living archive rather than a static display. By creating flexible spaces that accommodate both study and public engagement, the museum can adapt as new discoveries are made. This approach supports transparency in research and provides a template for institutions that wish to combine education with live scientific work.

My approach comes from a willingness to question the standard museum model. I looked at the museum as a space for ongoing discovery rather than a fixed collection of artifacts. This perspective led me to integrate spaces where visitors can engage directly with the research process. By challenging traditional layouts and using flexible, adaptive designs, the project becomes an environment where history is not just displayed but is continuously explored and updated. This approach reflects a commitment to rethinking how museums serve both the public and the research community.

The design of the institution building supports the idea that learning is most effective when it is connected with real-world observation. By providing views of the excavation sites during lectures, the building creates a link between theoretical knowledge and practical research. This connection reinforces the idea that observing active work enhances understanding and retention of information. The design encourages a learning environment where ideas and evidence are experienced together, promoting a clearer understanding of the research process.
