During the development of the Drivemind Autonomous Delivery Vehicle, we encountered several unexpected insights while merging traditional design elements with advanced autonomous technology. One of the first challenges we faced was a simple technical issue: how to make a car without a driver still look like a car. The absence of a visible driver creates a design paradox, as traditional vehicles are often defined by their driver-centric features, like the steering wheel and seats. This posed a challenge in maintaining a familiar car-like presence while communicating that the vehicle is autonomous. To resolve this, we focused on the vehicle's silhouette and key design elements such as the headlights and grille, ensuring that the car retained its identity, even without human presence inside. Another surprising discovery arose when incorporating retro features like chrome detailing and rounded shapes, which are typical in classic vehicles, into a design that also needed to reflect the clean, minimalistic elements of future tech. We realized that achieving the right balance between form and function required thinking beyond traditional automotive design and incorporating technology-driven elements that still felt visually cohesive. Testing the vehicle's design in various urban environments also provided new insights. We found that the retro elements, while visually striking, could potentially clash with more modern, high-tech settings. To solve this, we positioned the vehicle in historic neighborhoods or areas with older architecture, allowing its vintage appeal to resonate, while still highlighting its advanced technology. Lastly, the vehicle’s design had to be intuitive for its user interface. Simplifying the high-tech functionality to make it relatable and easy to engage with was a rewarding challenge, emphasizing how design can enhance user interaction with complex technology.
