Interview with Daisuke Kobayashi

Find unique cutting in “why”. There are many different ways of thinking about design, but we try to come up with a clear, fresh, and memorable design from an unorganized state.

Design Legend Interview

1 July 2024

I grew up in a free environment since childhood. I loved playing by designing simple spaces and imagining stuffed animals going on adventures in a world of fantasy.

The people involved in design looked very happy.

I aspired to become a designer.

I specialize in graphic design. In addition to creating symbol marks and packaging, I've also gained experience in redesigning traditional crafts and winning medals design for world championships and monument panels design for pavilions. Moving forward, I aim to continue designing iconic three-dimensional objects.

Turning failures into stepping stones for future success and embracing positivity. Keeping calm to surrender to the flow, rather than letting feelings of haste take over.

I think that designs created by talented individuals have a long-lasting "depth" and "dwell time" in people's hearts.

A good design includes "white space" to captivate people.

Creating designs that linger in people's minds is crucial. If a design can achieve long-term memorability among people, it can ultimately reduce the frequency of redesigns needed.

I want to create designs related to cats for people who love them.

As fellow Earthlings, this is a design project to think about the Earth together with people from around the world.

Harmony with nature.

Tom Geismar, Paula Scher.

The poster design for Smap's CD by Kashiwa Sato. It has an overwhelming presence within a simple expression.

One of the everyday items that blend into Japanese daily life is the sparrow-themed memo pad design, which I particularly like.

I believe that facing the errors within myself is crucial. By understanding these errors, I can increase opportunities to positively influence those around me and, as a designer, contribute effectively to society.

An artist.

I think design is about opening the doors of people's hearts.

My daughter.

The pure hearts that children have.

An own desire.

A design expression that allows it to linger in people's hearts and minds for a long time.

I hope it becomes a design that lingers in children's memories, although I can't specify exactly how.

Creating designs that permeate society regardless of changing times.

I don’t care about what people expect from me. Just focusing on the project at hand.

It becomes a common vision for many people, indicating the direction towards a better society.

I am excited about everything I am working on, while at the same time, approaching it with a sense of calm.

World swimming medal design. People all over the world responded.

Promotion of the concept of global-scale design beyond borders.

Designs inspired by invisible entities such as microbes or air.

The duration of a design project varies depending on the content of the project, from 3 weeks to 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months.

I facilitate building a shared vision through communication with clients and team members.

A design with harmony with nature, the perspective of living beings.

I believe that ideas and designs conceived from scratch by someone often create trends.

The role of enhancing the resolution of expression.

Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Something that constructs presence.

I believe that the perception of design resides within people's hearts, so I don't particularly have anything specific I want people to ask about my designs.

I imagine which experiences or events from my life are most closely related to the emotions I feel when I see a great design.

A mutual respect for each other's existence. I believe that through collaborative design, we can achieve expressions that surpass expectations.

My daughter.

Creative thinking by Kashiwa Sato.

In nature, people recognize their smallness, become humble, and believe that their skills are honed by perceiving things with the sparkling eyes of a child.

People who live on Earth in the future and feel happy.

It's very fortunate. Whether one becomes famous or not, I perceive it as a very small matter.

I love the color of the sky, nature, food that is easy on the intestines, and spring in Japan.

When I was a newly minted designer, I accidentally scratched up the meeting table frequently used by the company president while trimming posters. The next morning, I immediately went to apologize to the president, who kindly said, "It's no big deal even if this cheap table gets scratched."

The meditation. It clears unnecessary thoughts within myself.

I haven't imagined it. Even now, I don't consider myself great and cherish my original intentions.

If human desires take precedence over the Earth, I believe that in the future, it will create an environment where life becomes increasingly unsustainable.

As fellow Earthlings, we gaze upon the same sun each day, savor the air, and share the same moments in time. I would be happy if my designs could naturally permeate people's lives, much like water flowing down a mountain, gently seeping into the earth over time.

Designer Interview

1 July 2024

When I was a child, I discovered that expressing something could make people smile. I also noticed that people involved in design always seemed to be having fun.

SUKEDACHI DESIGN was founded in Fukuoka in 2013 with the mission of "helping those who need a design for their customers." Today, I specialize in graphic design, focusing on product and corporate branding, identity, and art direction. Whenever you feel the need for design for your customers, I aim to be the support you can rely on.

Opening the door to someone's heart.

A design that brings smiles to people's faces, like an award-winning medal.

A design of objects or symbols.

An A4-sized flyer.

Something that evokes a sense of light.

The moment when someone's heart's door opens.

A design focused on evoking feelings rather than expressing answers.

It feels like experiencing emotions filled with hope, just like a young boy's.

A mix of excitement and the calm feelings needed to temper that excitement.

A feeling of believing through and through.

A design that includes whitespace to enhance the clarity of information conveyed.

Making people who empathize with it smile.

The methods of expression may have evolved, but whether the field itself is evolving is uncertain. If the design is bringing more smiles to people, then perhaps it is evolving.

During art school. No specific plans have been decided for future events.

Natural and childlike, unbiased and clear.

Approaching the "Why" behind products or services and uniquely transforming it.

The land, air, visible landscapes, and serene people of Fukuoka, Japan, where I live, influence my approach to design. Japan has a cultural tradition of revering nature, which fosters an environment where inspiration can be drawn from daily life. I don't feel any shortcomings.

I work together with the company's representative to identify the essence of what customers are seeking and then proceed with the design.

First, I will propose designs that approach the "why" by first establishing a shared vision that companies and teams can understand. If we prioritize designs that emphasize "why" rather than "what", I believe you will surely encounter excellent designers.

First, I immerse myself in the experience of being a user of that product or service. The more tangible and specific this experience is, the higher the resolution of the final design when it is completed.

A glasses. Cat art. Eames chair. A model of a Japanese sword. An Aroma Candle.

I spend each day cherishing time so that I won't have any regrets even if I were to die tomorrow.

Failures are for oneself, successes are for others.

A designer's strengths lie in their ability to create something from scratch and accumulate diverse insights through interactions with various industries, which can be applied to innovate new expressions. On the downside, stress and motivation levels can significantly impact their creative output.

Adapting to human behaviors and emotions, and permeating into society.

Building a shared vision through communication with clients and team members.

Meditation. It allows you to organize your emotions.

I manage my time while believing in myself, aiming to maintain high motivation as much as possible.

3 weeks to 2 months.

Many clients ask me, "How do you think customers will feel about this design?”

The Design of the winning medal for the World Aquatics Championships.

People such as local businesses, local universities, individuals striving to enhance regional values, and those engaged in product development.

It's a job where I can communicate directly with the representative. This allows for a straightforward understanding of the design that the company is seeking.

Our branding.

I take responsibility for developing the design.

A cat art project.

Inquiry from the website contact form.

We are all Earthlings, living alongside various creatures. I want to create designs that contribute to making the Earth a more compassionate and habitable place for future generations.
