Design Legend Interview
4 May 2020
I wanted to explore various design experiences, so upon studying industrial design in Korea, moved to London to experience graphic design and finally, obtained a degree in interior design from California State University.
I was a big fan of Automotive design. I went to College to become an automotive designer, and I've been obsessed with design ever since.
Definitely, I chose my career to be a designer who could create and sell my own designs.
I design all elements of the journey of experiences, events, and exhibits. I am always eager to explore different types of designs, but I truly love what I do.
Experience the World, Expand your Horizons, and Deconstruct your Limitations.
A good designer can make great designs, but a great designer can take the Client or Brands desires and translate that to a great design.
Approach makes a good design, and straight-forward solutions make a more effective design to communicate w/ audiences.
Good design enables audiences to think, dream, and feel optimistic.
I would love to design .......
I have always wanted to design and create the event theme for the Winter Olympics.
Simplicity. Less is More.
Zaha Hadid, Architect. Porsche, not just cars but brand experiences.
Apple Products. They are User-friendly and have a simple approach.
My greatest design was the “Kizuna” event from my portfolio. Kizuna means relationship in Japanese. My client in Tencent Japan wanted long term business relationships to meet in respect with local business culture. We introduced “String” as a visual concept of connection, and interpreted it throughout the space and motion graphics as an overall theme.
They need to gain more world experience, but also save inspiration when it comes. I have been putting my inspirations and ideas into my notebook since 2000.
I would have been a businessman in a financial or investment field.
Design is marketing for me. I have run a marketing agency for almost 10 years, and without design and creativity, my business would not be successful.
Though I don't think I reached my apex yet I would have to say my biggest supporters were my parents.
My life in Seoul, London, and California. Different experiences, food, people, stores, and even sunshine created points of inspiration for me.
Scheduling and time management.
They should present their work w/ proper methodology to convince their client.
We are currently working on one automotive campaign beyond the conventional launching method.
The ultimate goal is to share my knowledge, limit, and experience to future designers.
People expect quite a bit, and its my job to work hard to meet those expectations!
Good design enables people to feel, talk, and share ideas with each other.
I have two ongoing projects. The fundamental concept of both projects have been shifted due to COVID-19, and the shift makes me concerned and simultaneously excited.
Recently, the World Cyber Games in China has brought me great satisfaction. It was a very challenging projectt w/ limited time and budget, but as one team, my global staff made this event happen.
Would like to see more open cooperation between designers, there has been too much unwillingness to share ideas and creativity that would help the industry improve as a whole.
Existing in the COVID-19 era, virtual concepts will be more realistic moving forward.
It really depends on the project, but normally it takes 3-4 months.
When we have a new design project, everything begins with research.
Experience and Perspective
It is correlated. Cant say which comes the first.
The technology helps to minimize the risk and to convince my client to move forward.
3Dmax, Photoshop, Illustrator, Vray, Indesign.
It is like water, air, and soil, all essential to growing a strong design.
How did you bring up this brilliant idea? What is the downside on your design?
I would like to digest and utilize this inspiration on my next project.
A design partner should be able to share knowledge and creativity while simultaneously accepting creative criticism. I firmly believe in co-design.
Joe Zamora, who used to be my genius college classmate and is currently my partner.
Automotive magazines, architecture archive. Too many books inspire me.
Pinterest, Behance, and many books. Most of all, discussing with my creative staff.
Myself in 2001. I would like to tell myself who wasn't sure about future that I would be doing alright and that I should keep working hard!
It was not as hard as executing the project. This recognition is rewarding and proving that I and my staff worked hard and efficiently.
Camel brown, Croatia, Porterhouse Steak at Mastro, Spring, Motorbike like Ducati, and Urus from Lambroghini.
Good life balance, communicating with my clients and my creative staff makes my day great.
Not really, but they thought I would be something great!
Virtual World w/ no limits. The future will be better than now despite many challenges. I believe in mankind.
Thanks for your interest and look forward to communicating with next exciting project.
Designer Interview
4 May 2020
I was always intrigued by design, and I wanted to explore various design experiences, so after studying industrial design here in Korea, I decided to further my learning abroad. I moved to London to experience graphic design, and after completing my studies there, I obtained a degree in interior design from California State University.
We are Eidetic. Eidetic is a global design agency with offices located in Los Angeles, Seoul, and Shanghai. We have a global team of design and marketing experts that create experiences that leave lasting, vivid impressions on our audiences.
Design is not just a visual deliverable for designers, it is an optimized balance of verbal, visual, architectural, and even financial considerations.
I like brainstorming with my creative staff, discussing various options that they brought up, and refining the best solution that works for my client.
My favorite design is the “Kizuna” event from my portfolio. Kizuna means relationship in Japanese. My client in Tencent Japan wanted long term business relationships to meet in respect with local business culture. We introduced “String” as a visual concept of connection, and interpreted it throughout the space and motion graphics as an overall theme.
A Company's portfolio
I prefer inexpensive materials with an easily accessible platform.
When my work has been published, recognized, or sold to end-users.
Less is More. I focus on eliminating excess and bringing attention to what is most necessary.
Excitement, anticipation, and sometimes doubt.
I feel fulfilled and that all the efforts I and my team made were worthy!
Creative strategy with Simple visuals
Understanding of the project's objective, the thoughtfulness of the idea, and the strength of the visuals
They should be responsible for creating positive messages for society and promoting the preservation of the environment.
Thanks to the advancement of technology, this field will be cross-functional and more dynamic in the future, blending the line between industries.
It was CES in Las Vegas, USA. My next will be Barcelona, Spain.
Digital resources such as behance, and pinterest, and analog resources such as design magazine, and my clip and archive really help inspire and maintain my creativity.
Simple designs with strong reasoning.
I live in Korea but organize projects worldwide. Cultural heritage does not really affect our designs, due to the global nature of our staff and my background.
With open communication.
Be open about what your goals are, but be willing to listen to outside opinions. Designers have a lot of varied experience to speak from, and can help you find new ways to reach audiences. When looking for a good designer, looking for someone who has relevant experience/portfolios will help quite a bit.
Look->Think->See->Dream
Panamera, Dyson Vacuum Machine, Dried Flower, Couch, and Macbook
Work hard, work out hard, eat well, sleep deep.
While you're young, try to experience as much as you can, and learn at least one foreign language. This will give you perspective and help you to support your designs.
Living as creative person is a positive, but being stuck in the studio for over twelve hours a day at times is a distinct negative.
Simplicity and Balance.
These days, computer skills are important to visualize your ideas and concepts. Also, communication skills are pivotal when it comes to convincing those who are investing in your design.
3Dmax, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Notepad. These days, I tend to be more analog, sketching, writing memos, and brainstorming on the paper.
The first thing I do is to list up daily tasks on the notepad. Regardless of how small or big tasks are, list up, and tackle them!
Depending on the project, but normally 3-4 months.
How did you create this? What was your inspiration?
Being an event/exhibit designer at my previous agency named Sparks.
Google, Samsung, Tencent, IBM, Bandai Namco, Vivo, and many more.
Spatial design, and creative strategy since they are my areas of expertise.
I would like to share my experience, challenges, and knowledge with future designers or students.
Mainly, I work with my talented creative team.
I am working on the brand visual strategy for a vehicle premiere.
