Interview with Hexagón

Design Legend Interview

26 April 2017

We are both students of last semester in the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, currently studying the degree in Industrial Design. We have both gained, individually and as a team, recognition inside and outside the university. We are very interested in studying abroad and would love to do a master's degree in interior and furniture design.

We are young designers so we are highly motivated to acquire a lot of experience and gain international recognition by representing Mexican design and in this way inspire more young people to share their talent and passion for design.

Being designers is a passion that we discovered over time, however we fell in love with it the minute we started to study it and it is something that is growing more and more in us.

We love experimenting with geometry and everyday objects to turn them into functional art, you could say that today we are working more in product design. However we would like to get involved in interior and furniture design,
without a doubt is a goal that we want to reach.

As young designers we would like to tell you to start as soon as possible to chase your dream without fear of failure because with time and mistakes you only gain wisdom and experience which are two vital tools for success.

A great designer does not settle, he seeks to leave the comfort zone and find new challenges without lowering his standards. Does not give up and never let failure stop him. A great designer always looks forward to new experiences and back to learn from his mistakes.

A great design needs to be something innovative that achieves a connection with the user on many levels, it has to be aesthetic and functional. It´s value proposal has to be strong enough to be able to differentiate it from the rest.

Good design generates a change in the perception and in the mood of the people.

We would love to do some product design for Alessi.

Remodeling of a house or apartment with our own products.

Perseverance and team work.

Damian Hirst, Zaha Hadid and Alessandro Mendini.

Zaha Hadid´s Yacht design.

The wine cellar because of it´s elegance and complexity but mainly because of it´s functionality.

If you believe in your idea, Don't quit!

Ana Emilia: Engeniering
María Paula: Photography

Is everything that serves as a tool to project a creative idea in real life.

Our families always have been our greatest support.

Starting at a young age, never the less we still have a long journey ahead of us.

Facing unsupportive people and not being able to find good business providers.

In design exhibits.

We are in the middle of collaborations with designers in Italy and India, stay posted.

Earned international recognition.

Constant innovation and permanent uniqueness.

Design is meant to solve problems.

Collaborations with different designers in different countries.

The plantes because it was the one with more challenges.

Create great instead of good design.

Technology development and environmental friendly products.

2 to 5 months.

Sketching different ideas.

Sacrifice is not a negative thing.

Design sets the trend.

It's the main part in our design process.

Computarizad cutting and CAD programs.

How long it took us to make it.

I want to make something like that someday.

We found in each other our ideal design partner and we obviously believe in co-design.

Raising from our failure and mistakes.

Zaha Hadid.

We aren't really at that level yet, it's inspiring to have recognition.

Ana Emilia: Blue, Aruba, Meat, Summer, Books and Tesla.
Maria Paula: Black, NY, Chinese, Summer, Camara and Roche Bobois.

Somehow when we are creating something new at some point of the process everything starts going wrong!

Getting recognition like being invited to Milan design week and winning an A design Award.

No, we discovered our love for design later on.

Technology will be so advanced that we might all be kind of cyborgs.

Thanks for your support! It means a lot, we would continue to push ourselves to our very best.

Designer Interview

Hexagón is a Design Studio and registered trademark founded by two Mexican industrial designers, it’s focused on geometric abstraction and manipulation, using innovative technics and technologies, transforming everyday-objects into functional art pieces. Its goal is to position itself as leader in quality, aesthetics and innovation at an international level.

Is everything that serves as a tool to project a creative idea in real life

We prefer interior products that not only are beautiful but more importantly functional.

Probably our wine cellar, its made of natural wood and computerized cut. It is meant for young couples who want to decorate their living place while storing their wine in the best way posible.

A first aid kit

Material probably wood, platform SolidWorks, technology anything that includes precision cutting (laser, water, CNC, etc)

Probably while dreaming or at any given time during the day a crazy idea might come to mind, we later analyze and develop some of this ideas.

Functionality and aesthetics

Frustration and then relief

We feel very proud

Team work and perseverance

Function, technology, quality and aesthetics

Its our obligation to create things that contribute to our society thats why for us function is so important

We are becoming better for our environment and also technology helps to create things

It was at Milan, Ventura district this past April 2017. Our next exhibition will be at the World Trade Center Mexico City on May 2017

Geometry, math, usually sculpture and art are our best inspiration

I don't think we can settle ourselves into one particular style but you would se through all our designs that they are assembled, geometric and symmetric

We live in México, the pros of living here are that design has been getting stronger and respected through the last decades, the cons are that most people don't value the complexity of design and this often makes it difficult to sell.

We have had good experiences with companies although we prefer working independently

Understand what is it that you're trying to solve before going to the designer.

Its a very long process, it all begins with an idea that then becomes a brainstorm, sometimes the ideas are completely shifted from what they were supposed to be at the beginning, then comes sketching, drafting, rendering, prototyping, experimenting, polishing and finally selling

Bookshelf, Hexagon winecellar, Hexagon Stool, Alessi wineopener, Zaha Hadid's miniature yacht model

Wake, work, exercise, repeat

We ourselves are really young, our best advice would be start now! Don't waste anytime, everyday is experience gained, and to be a great designer you need tons of that

You are able to create almost anything with enough dedication, I don't think there are any negatives if you put all your effort in what you love.

Don't quit

For us is teamwork and software

SolidWorks, Vray, Autocad, Illustrator, Design books, Architecture books

Well you need to have priorities, sometimes finishing a design is the priority so we'll sleep really few hours between days.

2-5 months

Can you make a cheaper version?

Business offices, architects

Remodeling is one of our favorite jobs because we get to see an entire space become something different, hopefully better

Evolve the complexity of our products

As a team

We are in the middle of collaborations with designers in Italy and India, stay posted
