Designer of the Day Interview
22 May 2024
I have been in the design industry since 2007, giving me over 17 years of experience. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with several prominent companies and esteemed clients. My educational background includes a degree in business of design in BMI and Project management in London business school and finance, which laid the foundation for my professional journey.
I've always been passionate about design, drawn to drawing and creating from a young age. My father, an interior designer, greatly influenced me with his passion for transforming spaces. Although we took different paths in design, I was determined to create my own identity.A pivotal moment for me was when a child compared me to a fairy who could transform ugly spaces into something wonderful. This reinforced my belief in my abilities and fueled my drive to excel in design. My journey has been driven by a deep passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces and a desire to make a positive impact through design.
When designing, my top three priorities are functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.
Functionality: Ensuring that the space or product meets the practical needs of its users is paramount. I focus on creating designs that are intuitive, efficient, and enhance the user experience.
Aesthetics: I strive to create visually appealing designs that evoke emotions and tell a story. Each project incorporates a central theme that aligns with the client's vision while maintaining a unique and cohesive style.
Sustainability: I prioritize sustainable practices, using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions to minimize environmental impact.
In terms of technique, I rely on a blend of traditional and digital tools. I start with hand sketches to brainstorm and conceptualize ideas, then transition to computer-aided design (CAD) software for detailed plans and renderings. Physical models and mock-ups are also integral to my process, allowing me to explore and refine designs in a tangible way.
Approaching a new project involves thorough research and understanding of the client's needs and the project's context. I engage in collaborative discussions to gather insights and ensure that the final design aligns with the client's vision and goals.

Designing fulfills me by allowing me to express my creativity, solve complex challenges, and create spaces or products that enhance people's lives. It provides a deep sense of happiness and accomplishment, knowing that my work can inspire and positively influence others. The pleasure I derive from designing comes from this combination of creative expression, technical execution, and the tangible impact of the finished product.

A day in my life as a designer is always dynamic and filled with new experiences. I start my day by taking my child to nursery, which sets a positive tone for the morning. After a refreshing meditation session, I head to the office, where no two days are ever the same. From brainstorming sessions with my team to client meetings and design work, each day brings new opportunities and challenges. Whether I'm crafting design concepts, meeting with clients, or exploring the city for inspiration, I love the variety and excitement that comes with being a designer. It's this ever-changing nature of my work that keeps me motivated and engaged every single day.
I believe in finding a balance between staying informed about current design trends and maintaining my own personal design style. While I do keep an eye on the latest trends through industry publications, design blogs, and attending design events, I prioritize developing a timeless aesthetic that reflects my unique vision and values. I'm more inclined towards creating designs that have longevity and resonate with users beyond fleeting trends. However, if a particular trend aligns with my design philosophy and enhances the project's concept, I'm open to integrating it thoughtfully. My inspiration comes from a variety of sources, including nature, art, architecture, and cultural influences. Ultimately, I strive to create designs that are not only visually appealing but also functional, sustainable, and meaningful.
For me, good design is defined by its ability to seamlessly blend form and function, enhancing the user experience while also considering aesthetic appeal and practicality. When evaluating products or projects, I look for several key aspects that indicate a well-designed outcome. Firstly, functionality: does the design effectively fulfill its intended purpose? Secondly, aesthetics: is the design visually appealing and cohesive? Thirdly, innovation: does the design offer a fresh perspective or solve a problem in a unique way? Additionally, I consider factors such as sustainability, usability, and emotional resonance with users.
One particular thing that I look for in all products or projects is a sense of balance and harmony between various elements. Whether it's the proportions of a furniture piece, the layout of a space, or the choice of materials, achieving a harmonious composition is essential.
Some common mistakes to avoid for making good design include neglecting user needs, prioritizing style over functionality, and failing to consider the broader context in which the design will exist.
Ultimately, what makes a design good for me is its ability to inspire and delight while also serving a practical purpose. The main criteria I use to judge a design as good are its functionality, aesthetics, innovation, sustainability, usability, and emotional impact.

Deciding if a design is ready is a nuanced process that involves a combination of intuition, experience, and practical considerations. While perfection may be elusive, there comes a point in the design process where I feel confident that the design meets the project brief, fulfills user needs, and aligns with my vision and objectives.
For me, a design is ready when it achieves a balance between meeting functional requirements and embodying aesthetic appeal. I assess if the design effectively addresses the problem it set out to solve and if it resonates with the intended audience.
While there may always be room for refinement and improvement, there comes a time when further iterations yield diminishing returns. At this stage, I make a conscious decision to finalize the design and move forward. However, I remain open to feedback and opportunities for iteration even after a design is implemented, as continuous improvement is key to staying relevant and successful in the dynamic field of design.

Design Legend Interview
21 May 2024
I have a master's degree in architectural design and have studied the business of design at the Berlin Management Institute. I also completed project management at the London Business School and have a background in finance. This diverse education helps me approach design projects with both creativity and strategic insight.
I have always been passionate about design. Since I was a kid, I was attracted to drawing. My father was also an interior designer, and his passion was transmitted to me. I was always fascinated by his work, but each of us took a different path in design, allowing me to create my own identity. What made me believe more in myself was when a little child compared me to a fairy who could transform any ugly space into something wonderful and outstanding.
I chose to become a designer while I was still in school. I was very determined, and whenever consultants asked me about my career choice, I always gave the same answer.
I specialize in designing hospitality projects, including restaurants and hotels. I love creating inviting and memorable spaces for guests. In the future, I wish to design more innovative and sustainable hospitality environments that enhance the overall guest experience.
"Legend" is an exaggerated word. Design is something you learn as you go. Designers should be driven by passion, and once they embrace that passion, they will keep evolving and progressing.
A great designer is distinguished by their ability to lead, work under pressure, and always support their team members. It's not just about individual talent but also about fostering a collaborative and resilient team environment.
A good design is first and foremost about how well it works and its functionality. Once these fundamentals are in place, the creative touch is what elevates the design, making it truly outstanding. I evaluate good design based on its effectiveness in solving a problem and its aesthetic appeal.
Good design adds immense value by enhancing user experience, fostering brand recognition, driving innovation, and promoting sustainability. Investing in good design isn't just about aesthetics; it's an investment in creating products and experiences that resonate with users, differentiate brands, and drive long-term success.
I would love to design a museum, but it's so rare and exclusive.
My dream is to create my own boutique hotel and have my own hosting space. Since I love people and enjoy hosting, it would be great to establish MK Boutique Hotels.
My secret ingredient is love what you do and do it with passion
I love Kelly Westler / Patricia Urquiola… these women are inspirational on a global level
I love Philippe Starck design because he is bold creative, and he dares to be different
A design is great when it works well and its functional creative out of the box
You keep moving forward and work on yourself it’s a continuous job
A dermatologist because I love skin care and all the cream products
Design is a way of thinking and how you see things from different perspective
My family first of all and then my husband he is amazing and because of him I was able to excel specially as a mother he was taking care of our son and we were splitting tasks, despite his heavy schedule in work he always managed to empower me
Persistence and never wanting to give up
In many countries where I've worked, women aren't empowered, and access to information is limited
To effectively convey information to contractors and designers, drawings should be properly structured and exhibit a certain level of clarity and explicitness.
My next design project is a hotel in Romania Bucharest
My ultimate goal is to create my own brand in boutique hotels, focusing on a small niche.
They expect you to be always creative and always on top of things
Design helps create a better society by enhancing the way of living for others. In the retail sector, it creates comfortable setups and pleasant experiences for customers. In homes, it fosters more relaxing environments, allowing individuals to function better.
Each project requires a certain level of concentration and attention to detail, but the projects that excite me the most are in the F&B sector
F&B design projects have given me the most satisfaction because they serve the public and can attract many customers. By enhancing and elevating the dining experience, each project creates a unique setup and atmosphere.
I would like to see the design industry adapt to the rise of AI in the coming years. If we use AI in the right way, it can help facilitate our work. Looking back, designers started with paper and pen, and now we use software that speeds up our work. This evolution has greatly benefited the industry, and AI can be the next step in this progression.
The design field is headed towards augmented reality, where we will experience a blend of the physical and virtual worlds, essentially living a double life. This integration will revolutionize how we interact with our environment and perceive reality.
The time it takes to finalize a design project depends on the project's scale, client requirements, and any changes. Typically, it takes around two months to complete a full design package, including back-and-forth communication.
When starting a new design project, I begin by analyzing the project and assessing the list of requirements. Then, I start brainstorming around the layout. Sometimes, inspiration comes from small details.
My life motto as a designer is: "Design is not just how it looks; it's how it works."
Design and trends have a symbiotic relationship, influencing each other in a continuous cycle. Designers often set trends by introducing innovative concepts, materials, and aesthetics. However, trends also emerge from societal, cultural, and technological changes. Ultimately, it's a dynamic interplay where design both sets and responds to trends.
Technology plays a crucial role in the design process, enabling designers to explore ideas, visualize concepts, and communicate with clients and collaborators more efficiently. From computer-aided design (CAD) software for drafting and modeling to virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tools for immersive experiences, technology provides designers with a wide range of capabilities to bring their ideas to life. Additionally, advancements in technology have facilitated rapid prototyping, allowing designers to iterate and test their designs more quickly. Overall, technology enhances creativity, productivity, and collaboration in the design field.
In our work, we primarily utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. These include popular BIM platforms like Autodesk Revit, ArchiCAD, and Bentley MicroStation. BIM software enables us to create intelligent 3D models that incorporate architectural, structural, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) elements, facilitating coordination and collaboration among project stakeholders. Additionally, we leverage other design software for tasks such as 3D modeling, rendering, and visualization, including programs like Autodesk AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite. Our equipment typically includes high-performance computers or workstations capable of running demanding design software efficiently.
Color, materials, and ambient elements work together to create a cohesive and harmonious design that not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also functions effectively and enhances the overall experience of the space.
I wish people would ask me about the process and the challenges I encountered during the design journey. Understanding the journey behind the final outcome can provide deeper insights into the thought process, creativity, and problem-solving skills involved in bringing a design to life.
When I encounter a new great design or product, I immediately think about the thoughtful process that went into its creation. I appreciate the creativity, innovation, and attention to detail that contributed to its success.
Having an ideal design partner who shares similar values, creativity, and vision is essential, and I do believe in the power of co-design. My ideal partner would be someone like my friend Paula Chahine, an artist and designer whom I deeply value. Our shared understanding, mutual respect, and complementary skills would make for a dynamic collaboration, resulting in innovative and impactful design outcomes.
The people who have had the most influence on my design are undoubtedly my team. I consider them as family, and our collaborative interactions are invaluable. We constantly exchange ideas, share insights, and challenge each other, ultimately leading to richer and more innovative design solutions.
While I haven't had much time for reading lately due to the hectic nature of life, one book that has had a significant impact on my design perspective is "Travel by Design" by Assouline. Its exploration of how travel inspires and influences design resonates deeply with me, sparking creativity and opening new avenues of thought in my approach to design.
I believe that mastering design is a continuous journey of learning and growth. Over time, I have honed my skills through hands-on experience, experimentation, and a commitment to constantly expanding my knowledge. Developing what some might call the "designer's eye" comes with practice and exposure to various design principles and contexts. It's about cultivating a keen sense of observation, attention to detail, and the ability to discern quality and excellence in design. This ongoing process of refinement enables me to continually improve and evolve as a master designer.
Zaha Hadid's pioneering work in architecture and design continues to inspire countless individuals, including myself. While it's unfortunate that she's no longer with us, I would have loved the opportunity to meet, talk, and discuss ideas with her. Her groundbreaking designs, innovative approaches, and fearless creativity have left an indelible mark on the design world, and I would have cherished the chance to learn from her insights and experiences.
I feel grateful and honored to receive awards and recognition for my work. It's validating to see that my efforts are appreciated and acknowledged by others in the field. However, I don't let fame or accolades change who I am as a person. I remain grounded and humble, just as my mother taught me. Despite any recognition, I believe in staying true to myself and maintaining a down-to-earth attitude. Ultimately, it's the passion for design and the satisfaction of creating meaningful experiences that drive me, rather than any external validation.
My favorite colors are olive green and black. Black, in particular, resonates with me because it represents the absence of color. When I wear it, I feel neutral and more receptive to my surroundings. I love the spring season, and pasta is my favorite food!
During a site visit, I made the mistake of wearing the wrong shoes. As I walked across the construction site, my shoe got stuck in the freshly poured concrete! I had to laugh at the situation as I found myself standing there with one shoe stuck in the concrete. Needless to say, I ended up leaving the site minus one shoe that day!
Starting my day with meditation helps me clear my mind and set a positive tone for the day ahead. It allows me to release any negativity and create space for inspiration and creativity to flow. Additionally, I find motivation in setting goals and envisioning the impact of my designs on the world around me. Knowing that I have the opportunity to create something meaningful and contribute to enhancing people's experiences is what drives me as a designer.
It was never obvious to me or anyone else that I would become a great designer when I was a child. My focus was always on the present, striving to improve and grow into a better version of myself each day. The path to becoming a designer unfolded gradually as I pursued my interests and discovered my passion for creativity and problem-solving.
Looking a thousand years into the future, the possibilities are endless and perhaps even unimaginable. With the rapid pace of technological advancements and the exploration of space, it's not far-fetched to envision human colonization on other planets. Who knows, maybe by then, I'll be living on another planet, exploring new frontiers as a designer!
To all my fans, I want you to know that beyond my passion for design, I also have other interests that bring me joy and fulfillment. I love practicing pilates to stay balanced and healthy, and I have a deep appreciation for exploring new cultures and experiences. Additionally, I'm a proud owner of a Ducati Scrambler, which I adore riding whenever I get the chance. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm for my work—it means the world to me!
Designer Interview
21 May 2024
From a young age, I was drawn to color and design, which naturally led me to pursue a career as a designer. Yes, I've always wanted to be a designer. While every job has its challenges, this field allows me to constantly be creative and think outside the box. The ability to transform ideas into tangible and impactful designs is what fuels my passion and keeps me motivated.
My design studio feels like a second home to me, as I often spend more time there than at my actual home. It's a space where creativity thrives, collaboration happens, and ideas come to life. Our team is like a family, working together to push the boundaries of design and deliver innovative solutions for our clients.
For me, design is a way of thinking. It's about approaching problems creatively and strategically to find innovative solutions. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality, user experience, and making a positive impact on people's lives. Design is a holistic process that integrates imagination, practicality, and empathy.

Overall, designing is a dynamic and multifaceted process that can evoke a range of emotions, from joy and satisfaction to stress and exhaustion.
When my designs are realized, I often feel a sense of happiness and fulfillment. Seeing a vision that started as an idea or concept come to life is incredibly rewarding. It's a validation of all the hard work, creativity, and collaboration that went into the design process. Witnessing people interact with and enjoy the spaces I've designed brings me a profound sense of satisfaction, knowing that I've contributed to creating meaningful experiences and environments.
A design is successful when it effectively responds to the needs and objectives of the client in a creative and innovative way. Additionally, a successful design establishes a strong brand identity, communicating the values, personality, and vision of the client or organization it represents. It's about creating solutions that not only function well but also resonate with the target audience, evoke positive emotions, and leave a lasting impression. Ultimately, the success of a design is measured by its ability to fulfill its intended purpose while exceeding expectations and making a meaningful impact.
When judging a design, I consider circulation, color, furniture choice, and lighting as key aspects. These elements contribute to the functionality, aesthetic appeal, and overall success of the design.
From my perspective, designers have a responsibility to prioritize sustainability and environmental consciousness in their work. This includes using sustainable materials, minimizing waste, and incorporating eco-friendly practices into the design process. By doing so, designers can contribute to creating a better environment and promoting a more sustainable future for society. Additionally, designers have the opportunity to raise awareness about environmental issues and advocate for positive change through their designs and actions.
The design field is evolving rapidly, especially with advancements in technology and changes in global circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic. One significant trend is the increasing use of remote collaboration tools and virtual site visits. As you mentioned, the ability to conduct site visits via cameras allows designers to work on projects around the globe and assess work remotely. I don't have personal exhibitions, but I do participate in various design events and showcases through my work. My last involvement in a design event was at the Design Expo in New York City two years ago, where I showcased some of my recent projects. As for future exhibitions, I'm always looking for opportunities to share my work and connect with the design community. Depending on the circumstances, I hope to participate in another exhibition or design event in the near future.
My design inspiration comes from a variety of sources, including nature, art, architecture, travel, and everyday life. I find that immersing myself in different environments, cultures, and experiences helps stimulate my creativity and generate fresh ideas. Nature, with its colors, patterns, and forms, often serves as a rich source of inspiration for me. Additionally, I draw inspiration from contemporary design trends, historical references, and the works of other designers and artists. To feed my creativity, I enjoy exploring new places, attending art exhibitions, reading design magazines, and experimenting with different mediums and techniques. Ultimately, inspiration can be found everywhere; it's about staying curious, observant, and open to the world around us.
My design style is contemporary with a focus on minimalism and functionality. I explore this style for its timeless appeal and simplicity. My designs prioritize clean lines, geometric shapes, and a restrained color palette. I believe in balance, attention to detail, and practicality. My approach to design is iterative, collaborative, and driven by research, experimentation, and feedback.
I live in Dubai, where cultural heritage greatly influences design. The multicultural environment inspires diverse perspectives and fusion of styles in my designs. Pros include access to cutting-edge technology and global influences, fostering innovative and cosmopolitan designs. However, rapid development can pose challenges like balancing tradition with modernity and addressing sustainability concerns amidst urbanization. Overall, living in Dubai offers a dynamic backdrop for design, blending tradition with contemporary flair.
I collaborate with companies by understanding their needs, creating proposals, and executing designs. This involves concept development, feedback, and revisions. Throughout the process, I work closely with suppliers to ensure materials align with the design vision and meet quality standards. Effective communication and collaboration are essential for successful partnerships.
In selecting a designer, we recommend companies to first define their project needs and budget. Then, research and shortlist designers whose portfolios align with their project goals. It's essential to review portfolios, check references, and communicate openly to establish expectations. Trusting the designer's expertise and ensuring alignment with company values are also key factors. Finally, agree on terms in a written agreement to solidify the collaboration
My design process typically begins with a thorough understanding of the project requirements and client's goals. I start by conducting research, gathering inspiration, and brainstorming ideas. Once I have a clear vision, I move on to concept development, where I sketch out initial ideas and explore different design directions.
From there, I transition to the refinement stage, where I further develop the chosen concepts, considering factors such as functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. This often involves creating digital renderings or 3D models to visualize the design more accurately.
Throughout the process, I value collaboration and feedback, involving the client and other stakeholders to ensure that the design meets their needs and expectations. I iterate on the design based on feedback, making adjustments and refinements as necessary.
Once the design is finalized, I oversee the implementation phase, working closely with contractors, suppliers, and other collaborators to bring the design to life. I maintain open communication throughout this stage to address any challenges and ensure that the project stays on track.

To all the young and aspiring designers out there, I have a few pieces of advice that I've found invaluable in my own journey. Firstly, embrace failure. It's through our mistakes and setbacks that we learn and grow the most. Secondly, never stop learning. The design field is constantly evolving, so stay curious and keep exploring new techniques and ideas. Next, find your unique voice. Your individual style and perspective are what make you stand out as a designer. Don't be afraid to showcase your creativity and personality in your work. Additionally, seek feedback from mentors, peers, and clients. Constructive criticism is key to refining your skills and improving your designs. Build your network, too. Networking is essential in this industry, so connect with fellow designers and professionals to expand your opportunities. And lastly, stay passionate and persistent. Design can be challenging, but passion and perseverance will carry you through. Remember, success takes time, so be patient with yourself and keep pushing forward. With dedication and determination, you can achieve your dreams as a designer.
