Design Legend Interview

1 January 2025

I started my design career as an architectural draftsman in 1991, and since then I have improved myself by contributing to projects and designs in various architecture and construction offices. I have awards in many fields such as architecture, automobile, furniture and futuristic design category. I graduated from Istanbul Aydin University, Architectural Drafting Program.
I currently have a company called MGD Studio, which deals with creative projects in various fields. It produces versatile designs such as innovative, sustainable and environmentally friendly architectural projects, interiors and furniture.

Design is in my soul, the feeling of creating something. There are some abilities and characteristics that the universe has given to people. I believe I also have design talent. Even if I don't do anything, I find myself drawing something with a pen and paper in my hand. Sometimes the shape I see in my dreams, sometimes a texture I see in nature affects me.

I was chosen to be a designer and I am very happy about it. Creating something is not something that can be forced.

I design architectural structures, futuristic structures and furniture. But I would like to design more architectural structures.

They should be interested in art and culture, see and examine the works of great artists related to their field, improve themselves professionally, for example, if they are an architect, they should not leave hand drawing, perspective, photography, as well as technology behind. Must learn 2D or 3D software.

In my opinion, a great designer is the one who creates timeless designs and will inspire future generations.

First of all, being human-centered, sustainable and nature-friendly.

A good design is unique and valuable for the value it adds to people, brands, places, countries, cities, neighborhoods, etc. For example, you design a building for a city that reflects the history, nature and culture of that city, and that building becomes the symbol of that city or even country. Or you design a logo carrying symbols from the brand's philosophy and the brand's country, and when you see that logo, you understand. I has become the signature of that brand.

I would like to design a futuristic city and spaceships for a new Star Wars movie.

I would like to do a colonization project on the moon or mars

My imagination. “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Albert Einstein

Mimar Sinan (Great Architect Sinan), Jacque Fresco.

Santiago Calatrava / Turning Torso Tower building, Sculptural and extraordinary engineering technique. Salk Institute / Louis Kahn, Zaha hadid / Haydar Aliyev Center.

Field Of Flower villa project. An architectural structure inspired by nature. The structure resting on the bearing bases of arch or semi arch character has a reduced impact on the soil,so allows the soil to enjoy rain and breathe in.

I recommend them to be good observers, to improve themselves professionally and culturally, to constantly participate in art and cultural events (historical places, museums, concerts, etc.), to read books, to listen to music, and to not stay away from nature. On the other hand, I also find it important that they use necessary professional equipments (3D tools, printers, etc.) and follow technological developments. And lastly, and most importantly, I recommend that they have their own style.

I never thought about it.

Everything the eye sees is a design. In fact, that the eye does not see, such as diatom. It is a marvellous design of God.

My biggest supporter is my wife.

Being objective, supporting and contributing with ideas.

Designers should present their presentations in the form of billboards and models containing sketches, drawings, 3D perspectives, material and color selections, and support them with 3D animation and VR, which are technological blessings.

It could be a rock hotel or a floating hotel project.

To undertake major projects as a brand.

Designs that will satisfy their aesthetic perception and make their lives more beautiful and easier.

A good design makes the individual happy by supporting people's aesthetic perceptions and psychology. Society also consists of individuals.

Neom Project. A project that can be taken as an example for the future. human-centered and nature-friendly

It seems to me that with the introduction of AI, we are moving away from human-centered designs, I hope I am wrong.

It depends on the project.

I start by imaginary living within the project.

Never extinguish your inner child.

I think design sets trends.

While designing, I do not use technology much in the first stage, except for internet research. I use technology during the design development phase. 2D, 3D software, AI, 3D printer, VR glasses are my secondary supporting design tools.

Charcoal and sketch paper, crayons, 2D and 3D programs.

The effect of colors and materials on human psychology is already known and and scientifically proven. For this reason, its role in designs is important.

Why couldn’t have I thought of this?!

I believe in joint design. After creating the main concept in the design process, I believe that the design can develop through a joint exchange of ideas.

By working and constantly updating yourself.

Mimar Sinan, Leonardo da Vinci ve Albert Einstein.

I enjoy competing with other valuable designers and I am honored to be rewarded for my designs in the end.

My favorite colors are yellow and blue. In my opinion, the most beautiful city in the world, with its history and nature, is Istanbul, the city where I was born. My favorite food is kebab and Noah’a pudding as dessert. My favorite season is autumn, especially September.

Going to the seaside and drawing sketches while watching the sea.

I think yes. I used to make model houses from medicine boxes.

In the future, all architectural structures and designs will be simple and consist of very few basic organic materials, and I believe that many of the products we use now will be exhibited only in digital museums.

The sky's the limit when it comes to my designs and I now continue to follow my dreams, creating ground-breaking designs, both domestically and internationally.

Designer Interview

I started my design career as an architectural draftsman in 1991, and since then I have improved myself by contributing to projects and designs in various architecture and construction offices. I currently have a company called MGD Studio, which deals with creative projects in various fields. MGD Studio is a versatile design firm that engages in a variety of creative projects across different domains. MGD Studio creates innovative, sustainable and eco-friendly architectural projects, interior and furniture designs.

Design is life for me. Even life itself, nature and world are a design. Design is what you and your life makes artistic and peaceful. For me, earth is the most beautiful design.

Field of Flowers exactly. I find it both peaceful and esthetic.

An exhibition stand design for a cosmetic company

Stainless metal and corian are my favorite materials

I feel the most creative when I am in a peaceful place located especially in historical peninsula in İstanbul. It can be a cafe around

Design has to be different and amazing. I focus on those aspects

Peace, freedom and joy

I feel, it makes you proud to provide people and world a vestige, a work of art. And also responsibility. The responsibility for developing yourself

The main thing for a successful design is that it shouldn’t be time-bounded, on contrary it should be beyond time. It has to be appealling in every time zone. The functionality and attractiveness come after.

Esthetic appealling actually. When I glimpse, I want to be affected. After that, the functionality comes. But I judge a design at first look with its esthetic design

Designer, as an artist, is responsible for leading society and widening their scope. Therefore, he should be beyond time.

Future design will alter with newly invented materials – light but durable and also environment responsible – and human requirements. In this extinctive world, we have to become more environment friendly. Design value depends on this responsibility. In addition, it is time for science fiction movies come true. Human started to think moving to other planets and maybe even living in water. Design field is affected with these intellectual and material developments.

Design exists from the very beginning of time. Thus we are born with inspiration, it is inside us. All I do is to look inside me and examine my feelings and peaceful places are the best place to find yourself. Therefore I meet with nature time to time and listen to myself and the inspiration comes.

Actually futuristic. I believe that I come from beyond time.

I live in my home country, Turkey. Absolutely, my country’s cultural heritage affects my designs. I use some of our traditional motifs in my design.
I live in a city decorated with art works of world-wide reputable Architect Sinan – known as Great Sinan. Sinan’s philosophy and methods affect me all the time. I have the chance to examine his works whenever I want. On the other hand, I find it difficult to make people accept extraordinary ideas and designs and also implementing those designs in my country.

Every designer has his own style. Companies must consider whether their expectations are fulfilled by this designer, his style or not

Inspiration comes, sketching starts, function is given, analysis and researches are conducted. Materials are decided. After all, 3D modelling occurs.

Let your ideas free and be innovative. Discover the world and different cultures. Don’t let your inspiration die.

Satisfaction of creating makes your life meaningful.

Esthetic concerns

Being free-minded, imaginative, having esthetic pleasure, living beyond his time

Waste paper, pencil - black, red and blue colour, calligraphy pen. As software 3D Max, Autocad and Photoshop.

I listen new age and classical music to feed my muse.

Analyze, research and sketching require the most of time. I work systematically. If you plan your job, time management is not so difficult.

It depends on design itself. Sometimes one day, some times one week is necessary

Where did you graduate from? What is the fountain of your inspiration?

I love high-tech and futuristic designs. As I mentioned above, I live beyond time. I respect to classical design but I don’t like it. Innovation and technical progress excite me.

I have a mixed use architectural concept in investment process now. I want to implement it. After I want to run my own design atelier and create other concepts.

I design individually

Via e-mail and they can visit my webpage under www.mgd-studio.com

I wish there could be a technology that helps our dreams to transfer directly to a software as a drawing. I belive it will be some day, I hope I can see this technolgy.
