Design Legend Interview

22 April 2024

I have a B.A. in Industrial design and been working as a professional designer with 9 years of experience. I have previosuly worked in in children playgrounds & urban equipments industry and now am in a lead designer position in defence industry.

I always wanted to be a designer even since when I was a little kid. I've always found it fascinating how commonplace items are designed to improve user experiences.

A design is successful when it effectively communicates its intended message or function to the audience.

Businesses can benefit from improved user experiences, higher productivity, and competitive advantages through good design. Investing in quality design yields long-term cost savings, enhanced customer loyalty, and favorable brand perceptions. It also promotes inclusivity, sustainability, and social effect, which helps to create a society that is more inclusive and environmentally conscious.

There are lots of legendary designers I get inspiration from. It's impossible to list all of them. But some important names that comes to my mind first are Frank Stephenson, Daniel Simon and Murat Günak.

Design to me is transforming an idea, a function; to a usable, real product. Creating a bridge between abstract to concrete. Creating an item which is easily understandable and effortlessly used, while still appealing to the eye, being an object of desire.

I think it's a chicken-and-egg situtation. It's an infinite loop but the most important thing as a designer is being always up-to-date and trying to follow the latest news related to your work, the industry you work in and technological developments in general all around the world.

Designer Interview

I always wanted to be a designer even since when I was a little kid. I've always found it fascinating how commonplace items are designed to improve user experiences. My inquisitiveness prompted me to experiment with several artistic mediums, such as sculpting, sketching, and material fabrication. After thinking about it, I can say with confidence that pursuing a career in design has been among my most satisfying decisions. It enables me to transform my ideas into tangible objects that have a profound emotional impact on others.

I am working as a lead designer at Aselsan. Aselsan is is one of the largest electronics companies in Turkey working mainly on information technologies and defence industry.

Design to me is transforming an idea, a function; to a usable, real product. Creating a bridge between abstract to concrete. Creating an item which is easily understandable and effortlessly used, while still appealing to the eye, being an object of desire.

The first product I designed was a modular children's playground equipment. A climbing equipment consisting of roto mold plastics and a metal construction.

I feel most creative during the problem-solving stages of a project, when I'm faced with a challenge that requires innovative thinking and outside-the-box solutions. It's during these moments my creativity is ignited, as I explore various perspectives and brainstorm ideas to overcome obstacles.

I try to prioritize usability and efficiency. It's crucial to ensure that the design serves its intended purpose seamlessly, with intuitive navigation and clear functionality.

When I design, excitement fuels my creativity, igniting a sense of anticipation and enthusiasm. It's thrilling to explore new ideas, experiment with different concepts, and envision the possibilities. Each step of the design process brings a rush of energy as I see my ideas come to life.

Seeing my vision brought to life and positively impacting others fills me with joy and satisfaction. It's incredibly rewarding to witness the tangible results of my hard work and creativity, knowing that I've contributed something meaningful to the world.

A design is successful when it effectively communicates its intended message or function to the audience.

Designers should use their skills and creativity to make a beneficial impact on the world around them, as they have a significant influence on both society and the environment. Designers may contribute to the creation of a future that is more inclusive, fair, and environmentally sustainable by embracing ethical values, placing a high value on sustainability, and working towards equitable conditions.

Both is required in different kinds of projects. Right now, the products we are working on are mainly huge systems and generally need a lot of people from different fields to be delivered but I did individual design works in the past.
