Flora è un'illustrazione di fantasia per promuovere la creatività e la narrazione dell'artista, raffigurante la fioritura del microbiota gastrointestinale fecondato dall'ambiente gastrico agitato. La fioritura è rappresentata da petali di Bacteroidetes, Bifidobacteriam ed Enterococcus, pistilli di Lactobacillus e stami di Enterococcus faecalis appollaiati su steli di Escherichia coli. Il fiore stesso emerge sugli steli di Clostridium. Il Bacillus Cereus, un lungo batterio a forma di bastoncello nel suo stadio arthomitus, si attacca tramite fibre all'epitelio intestinale, cresce filamentosamente e sporula.

- Creating a visual pun on the idea that gastric flora might be blossoming flowers in the digestive tract, the artist set out to create a flower composed of the bacteria found in the gut.

- Created using Cinema 4D, a 3D modeling program, and Photoshop on a Mac.
- Sfida Progettuale
- Creating a flower that both looked like a flower, but was also easily recognized as being constructed of recognizable bacteria required a creative balance between the two.
- Ricerca
- The artist researched the common bacteria, called flora, of the gut. The artist studied electron micrographs depicting these different bacteria, and created 3D models of the different bacteria. The artist arranged the 3D-modeled bacteria to construct a flower, using different bacteria for different parts of the flower. The churning gastric juices and primordial environment of the gut comprises the environment from which the flower grows. The flower springs forth from the microvilli found in the lining of the small intestine.

- The artist is a certified medical illustrator working in the advertising and marketing of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Self promotional work created for clients, and prospective clients, is a chance to promote the artist's creativity, artistry and storytelling skills in visual science.

- The project was in development for three weeks at the artist's studio in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, USA.
