About Hair Salon Animal Toy
The team designed four cute animal shapes so children can learn to understand different animals and creative different hair styles for them to develop their own craft skills. The team made a large area of the pressure plate on the bottom of the animals, so children can easily operate. Children need to put the dough inside the animal toy, and through squeezing, the dough hair will be squeezed out and trim them. Dough is a material that can be reused. Moreover, the toy is suitable for playing with other people, such as friends and parents, and creates a lot of fun by making funny hair.
About Yi-Teng Shih,Vincent Mao and Jay Li
Dr Yi-Teng Shih has considerable industry experience and his portfolio ranges from consumer electronics to healthcare devices. These include projects for Brookstone, RadioShack, beurer, FORA and JustHerb so he has built design project collaborations between university and international/local companies. His supervision in design has won more than 50 international design awards and twelve patents in the past few years, including Reddot concept design award, IDEA award, A’ DESIGN award, European product design award and IDA design award. He has been invited as a design jury for 2018 International DesignNest Award and the topic was ‘Bring Your Designs to Life’.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- The unique properties are to make children become dough hairdressers giving full play to their creativity to design different hair styles for animals. It is very important to cultivate children's hands-on skills. It is hoped that through the process of making animal hairstyles, the six abilities of children can be improved: creativity, concentration, cognition, logic, aesthetics and expression. Trying to make animal hairstyles is an experimental process and kids can play together.
- Inspiration
- It is very important to cultivate children's hands-on skills. Children can dress the sheep toy into ewe, ram or punk sheep, so that they can freely create their own style for the toy. The toy is suitable for playing with other people, such as friends and parents, and creates a lot of fun by making funny hair. The dough can be reused and does not require electricity, so it is a sustainable toy.
- Research
- Dough is a material that is easy to shape; however, children need to create artifacts from scratch. This may make some children less motivated to play the dough. To solve this problem, we designed four cute animal shapes so children can learn to understand different animals and creative different hair styles for them to develop their own craft skills.
- Challenge
- Taking leading the growth of children's aesthetics as the project mission, the toy that integrates art (Art), games (Play) and imagination (Think), and is committed to children's aesthetic toys and aesthetic education. In order to reduce fixation of children thinking, we designed four cute animal shapes. For example, children can dress the sheep toy into ewe, ram or punk sheep, so that they can freely create their own style for the toy.
- Realization and Technology
- The material of this toy is plastic and is made by injection molding.
- Operation and Interaction
- Since this is a new toy launched, it has already received some good responses. “My son usually gets bored after playing with toys a few times. But this dough salon toy, he can play again and again, especially during epidemics.” Children need to put the dough in the animal toy, and through squeezing, the hair will be squeezed out. Dough is a material that can be reused. The dough will dry out after a period of use, but just add a little water to restore its original elasticity. This reuse material will benefit both users and environment.
