Regarding The Voice of Ceramic Resonant Speaker
The Voice of Ceramic is a series of resonance speakers made of ceramic for mobile phones. The speakers amplify sound without any power supply, so no electricity is used. A mobile phone is placed vertically into a groove in the middle of the body. Sound from the phone outlet enters the resonance chamber and is amplified, with the bass strengthened. Music is released from two outlets on the left and right, creating a stereo effect. The loudness of the same music can be increased by 12 dB. Ceramic has a long history as a material for musical instruments in China.
About Feng Li, Linlin Chen and Wenjing Yu
“Keydo” (“器道” in Chinese) is originated from the Book of Changes. Tao refers to methods and concepts and Qi refers to utensils and appliances. This is exactly what traditional Chinese culture pursues for creation. The concept of Keydo Design advocates to treat the lifestyle and inherent needs of men as the fundamental starting point of the design, takes full account of the natural properties of the materials, and strives to make the design of utensils in line with the internal laws of creation and express a specific cultural connotation so as to realize the Imitation of Nature and Integration of Crafts and Arts.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- The Voice of Ceramic is a series of resonance speakers made of china for mobile phones. It naturally amplifies volume without a power supply, and obviously reduces carbon emissions. The sound from sound outlet of mobile phone is amplified in volume when entering the resonance chamber. For the same piece of music, the loudness can be increased by 12 dB through this speaker due to the effects of sound convergence and resonance.
- Inspiration
- China has always been a suitable material for making musical instruments. There is a long history of the use of china(ceramic) as a material for making musical instruments. Porcelain Drum which is the famous Chinese ancient musical instrument, is made of china.
- Research
- Over the years, Apple has endeavored to reduce carbon emissions and the impact of its products on environment to a minimum level. This resonance speaker box amplifies volume naturally without power supply, which fits well the notion of Apple. Repeated calculations and testing have been made on its shape, size, center of gravity, orientation of pipe orifice, and the placement and angle of mobile phones. Glazing the china with different ceramic glazes, the speaker boxes will have varied colors.
- Challenge
- The biggest difficulty in the design and development of this product is the realization of materials and technology. The molding accuracy of ceramics is difficult to control, and the deformation after firing is uncertain. Repeated calculations and testing have been made on its shape, size, center of gravity, orientation of pipe orifice, and the placement and angle of mobile phones.
- Realization and Technology

- Operation and Interaction
- A mobile phone can be placed vertically into the groove in the middle of the resonance speaker box, and sound from the sound outlet of the mobile phone enters the resonance chamber to form resonance, thereby amplifying volume (in particular, the bass is strengthened). Music will be spread from both right and left sound outlets, which enables the sound from an outlet of the mobile phone to create a stereo effect.
- Project Duration and Location
- The series was designed and created in 2013 in Hangzhou, China, and then gradually improved and expanded until 2019.
