About Staat van Schiphol Illustrations

The artist developed a new style of illustrations in bright colors for a series of digital magazines for the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate. The artist made these line drawings in a Picasso-like style. Complex subjects, such as construction restrictions and noise pollution, are visually reduced to the core. Number 01 of the magazine, and the according series of illustrations, gives information about the safety on and around Schiphol Airport.

About Elise Eekhout

Before entering the artworld, Elise Eekhout has been a successful graphic designer for over 20 years. Visualizing is her second nature. Letters and texts have always been a source of inspiration and wonder for her. That is why Elise started as a graphic designer. But now, as an artist, she combines this fascination with the images she creates in her artworks. Graphic design, illustration, art. Each is meant to tell a story to the audience: graphic design is used to communicate a message in a very clear way and illustrations are used to support that message. But with her art, Eekhout likes to tell an unfinished story with enough room for you to use your own imagination.

Design Details

Unique Properties
A new visual language for a digital magazine about Schiphol Airport for the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate. Continuous line drawings were made to distinct this new series from other governmental digital magazines who mainly use photographs.
Inspiration
The designer was inspired by the simple elegance of the corporate identity of the Dutch government. The corporate identity consists of bright cheerful colors and clear visual language. Using this simplicity to visualize complex topics into one single line seemed like a logical step.
Research
Research was based on exploring history of art and the latest trends in contemporary visual language. Not only big artists like Picasso used the simplicity of line drawings. Also prehistorical people draw simple lines in caves to visualize the essence of things.
Challenge
The creative challenge was to translate (sometimes very complex) topics about safety/working/living on and around the airport into simple line drawings. To find the essence without losing recognizability.
Realization and Technology
The illustration were created by the artist with Adobe Illustrator software.
Operation and Interaction
The online magazine is published on the standard platform of the Dutch government.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in November 2021 in The Hague, finished in March 2022 in The Hague and was published online March 21th 2022.
Specifications
The illustrations are vector based and can be used in print on various sizes. The main use of the illustrations is online. So the images are converted to jpg. Because of the loading-speed, the images have a maximum dpi of 1980 x 1980. The cms will scale the images to the right proportion.
Keywords
illustration, line art, art, graphic design, schiphol, airport, plane, airplane, safety, work environment, building houses, home, environment, dutch government, inspectorate,
