About Contemporary Nineties Residential House

This project involved the renovation of a 1990s residence, originally presenting an emblematic high quality architecture of Brazilian design from that decade. Given the significance of the architecture, the intervention was limited to the interiors, aiming to preserve the 1990s character while updating the spaces to contemporary standards. The approach considered the original design intent, enhancing functionality and comfort without altering its architectural essence.

Unique Properties
This project is a thoughtful renovation of a 1990s Brazilian residence, preserving the original architectural quality while updating the interiors for modern living. Its distinction lies in maintaining the home’s authentic 90s character, using design interventions that enhance functionality, comfort, and aesthetics without altering the building’s original essence. The result is a harmonious balance between historical identity and contemporary lifestyle.
Inspiration
The design was inspired by the house itself, an existing 1990s project notable for its architectural qualities. The intervention focused exclusively on interior renovation, aiming to update the spaces to meet contemporary functional and aesthetic needs while preserving the original character of the residence.
Research
This design research focused on updating a 1990s residence while preserving its original architectural character. Objectives included enhancing functionality, comfort, and aesthetics without compromising historical identity. Methodology combined spatial analysis, material studies, and interior layout planning. Data was collected through surveys of existing conditions, sketches, and client feedback. Participants included the design team and homeowners. Results achieved a functional, balanced, and visually coherent interior.
Challenge
The main challenge was creating an interior that harmonizes with the house’s original 1990s Brazilian architecture. While the interiors were fully renovated to meet contemporary needs, the design carefully respects and complements the existing structure, ensuring a coherent and balanced relationship between modern functionality and the home’s vintage character.
Realization and Technology
The design process focused on respecting the original 1990s architecture while adapting interiors for contemporary use. Methodologies included detailed analysis of existing spaces, materials, and proportions. Interventions used high-quality finishes, updated lighting, and refined furniture layouts to enhance comfort and functionality. The approach balanced preservation with modernization, ensuring the original character remained intact while meeting today’s lifestyle needs.
Operation and Interaction
Interaction with the space is seamless and intuitive. The renovation preserves the original architectural layout, so movement flows naturally through the rooms. Key transformations occur in the interiors—updated finishes, lighting, and furniture layouts adapt the home for modern living without altering its structure. These interventions enhance comfort, functionality, and visual coherence, allowing the residence to perform better by combining historical character with contemporary usability.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in October 2018 in Blumenau and finished in November 2020.
